Dictionary word of the day is: birl - (verb) meaning to spin or cause to rotateThe contest required the lumberjacks to birl the log as long as possible without falling into the lake. I notice some of us like to completely change the "word of the day". In this instance, let us thank AVP for turning this verb into a noun.

George Eliot was a pseudonymous name by a female whose real name was actually Mary Ann/Marian Evans since it was unpopular at one time to be published for a female author.

Many politicians are infamous for their pseudology, they do it so well it's hard to tell when they do tell the truth to us Americans!

Oh Dearie, I thought you would appreciate that. *still trying to equate sarcasm and LYING* .....but because it's Anti, will give her a pass......just this once! Oh, I see your issue. All of my sarcasm equates to lying. If someone has a terrible singing voice and I say "I think you should audition for American Idol or The Voice.", then not only am I being sarcastic, but I am also lying. Perhaps I am being too literal. If it is sarcasm, then is it irony rather than a lie? for giving me a pass or I would have suffered your sarcasm.

sar·casm/ˈsɑr kæz əm/ Show Spelled [sahr-kaz-uh m] Show IPA noun 1. harsh or bitter derision or irony. 2. a sharply ironical taunt; sneering or cutting remark
1. mocking, contemptuous, or ironic language intended to convey scorn or insult 2. the use or tone of such language [C16: from Late Latin sarcasmus, from Greek sarkasmos, from sarkazein to rend the flesh, from sarx flesh]
A form of irony in which apparent praise conceals another, scornful meaning. For example, a sarcastic remark directed at a person who consistently arrives fifteen minutes late for appointments might be, “Oh, you've arrived exactly on time!”

Dictionary Word of Today is the 3rd consecutive word beginning with "pseudo"
pseudomorph [SOO-duh-mawrf]- noun meaning an irregular or unclassifiable form
Me: Citizens of Smallville constantly stumbled upon rocks that were a pseudomorph of the green kryptonite that weakened Clark Kent.
Dictionary's example: He blamed the sciences for reestablishing the mirage of truth, and still more the pseudomorph subjects like anthropology and economics whose adepts substituted inapplicable statistics for the ineptness of their insights.
I am curious what you will come up with.

I remember learning about pseudomorphs in school. That's when I learned that petrified wood is a pseudomorph. There's a national park in California called "The Petrified Forest." Our family made a stop there as part of a family vacation.n We picked up several pieces of petrified wood. I had them for many years, but have since lost them. Good word.....it brings back fun memories of family. Not that they're petrified, of course! ;D

SoCal, thanks for giving us a logical use for the word. [/b][/quote] And, a "tip of the hat" to you, Anti, for giving some fun wordplay. I always enjoyed the "It Pays to Increase Your Word Power" in the monthly Readers Digest. Your thread reminds me of that.

Or could we at least move on from 'pseudo' to 'ersatz'? That's a much funnier term. Especially since it's Firesign Theater who's responsible for me even knowing 'ersatz' in the first place.
