River is dangerous. Maybe Jayne shouldn't make cracks about doctors. What's up with smacking women around?

Is it bad that I have a degree in psychology and yet, I'm laughing at River's insanity? I have ideas on what happened to River, but I wouldn't want to bore you guys with all that. I have wonderful things to show you before the movie and after the last episode. I have coordinates to the River Tam sessions conducted by the Alliance while she was in captivity there.

I want you to know that there is more, even though we're past the halfway mark for the series. There's also a documentary about the movie called "Done The Impossible" we'll watch after it.

I'm intrigued... Oh and what the hell just happened!? Did Jayne betray his crew?

Great!.
Where are you in the show? I'm at the point where Jayne left them in the room alone.

I think we are at the same point. I never thought Jayne would betray them!
Simon is one clever and brave doctor.

I like Zoe's delayed "clear!" after she zaps that officious doctor.
Drug trafficking proposed by a doctor is kind of funny.

Wait a minute! I thought Jayne was rushing them because he had changed his mind about betrayal, now I am not sure.

That was very interesting, Simon exploring River's head, almost sounded like a refresher course in Abnormal Psychology... without the amygdala, while it's not usually cut (and this is SciFi), it's sometimes not funtional. It can manifest in symptoms of PTSD, Bipolar, can cause Panic Disorder... here's one of my informative sources on this subject. www.psycheducation.org/emotion/amygdala.htmSorry, couldn't help myself... And actually, even without knowing this, I was not far off... something tells me I would be a great psychologist...

I was hoping River's "gibberish" was code for a plan to help them to escape.
Jayne might not be the brightest bulb in the chandelier, but he is good back-up in a fight.
I can see why River is scared of those dudes. They look scary before they do anything.

Mal knew Jayne betrayed them... I love how he's seeking a bit of justice for his crew by using a scare tactic... Give me a guy like Mal any day... That episode was fantastic! I loved how we got a little more info about what happened with River... I don't know about you guys, but what Simon discovered tells me a lot. Which is kinda what I started explaining then gave you a link.

Simon still trusts Jayne; he would not expect Jayne to betray them. Mal did not waste a bruised knuckle on Jayne; he used a wrench. Jayne almost got religion when he thought he was going out the airlock, but we know he was lying anyway. In spite of being a scoundrel, Jayne still wanted the others to have respect for him. Aww... Mal is a heck of a captain, and I hope the lesson sticks with Jayne. When Simon said "Time to wake up" to River, I wonder if he has a drug that will help her overcome what they did to her.

Regardless of this being SciFi... I do see a little truth in Rover's symptoms and Simon's discovery was spot on with what I thought (with a little SciFi twist of course) so yes, since there is medication that can help overcome symptoms like what's River is experiencing, then yeah, Simon probably has some medication that can help River.

Thanks Chloe. That would be nice. Of course, that would change the dynamics of the role River plays, but she will still be interesting.

However, if you go for a degree in Pyschiatry as opposed to Psychology you will learn so much more about how the brain functions. The amygdala, for example, is one of the earlier developed areas of the brain, also known as the mid-brain, or the limbic system. It is predated by the area called the reptillian brain. I remember this from my days as a pre-med student. getrealwellnesssolutions.com/getrealguru/do-you-react-or-reason-recognizing-reptilian-brain-mentalityIf you learn how the brain functions you'll be much more than a social scientist, you'll be an actual scientist, with knowledge of how things work from a physical point of view. Once you explore the differences in brains from birds, humans, reptiles, and others you'll find amazing correlations to humans. For example the visual cortex of birds is overdeveloped and at the very front of the brain. This means that they can see on a superhuman level, and have acuity we could only dream of. My advice is to learn as much about the physical aspects as you can, as it will ground your knowledge in the theoretical aspects of how the mind works. Of course, this is very much dependent on what interests you, most. There are no bad decisions here.

I love this episode too. Has a lot of action and shows details of the crew's personalities. Favorites: Captain Mal defending River after she cut Jayne Simon taking charge of the hospital invasion operation Jayne trying to learn medical jargon and saying his rehearsed lines when he did not need to Zoe giving officious acting doctor an electric shock and then saying "clear" Jayne insisting they turn around, then hears screaming, and runs to follow River Captain hitting Jayne with a wrench Mal and Jayne in the airlock scene Mal walking up the steps while leaving Jayne in the airlock and pitiful Jayne saying "Can I come in?"

I love the idea that Malcolm gives everyone an equal chance, even those that he might be at odds with in terms of ideals, like Jayne.

Thanks Chloe. That would be nice. Of course, that would change the dynamics of the role River plays, but she will still be interesting. That will depend on the dosage needed, and like any good doctor, Simon would have to implement the lowest dosage possible first, so it's gonna take some time for the dynamics of the character to completely change, there will still be some insanity at least for a long while. My advice is to learn as much about the physical aspects as you can, as it will ground your knowledge in the theoretical aspects of how the mind works. Thanks, I would love to get into psychiatry, but I worry about the money... Hell, I'm only at my Associate's and I barely had enough to get that even, in fact I am forced to take a break from schooling because of money, but I just recently found some textbooks to further my education. They may be a little dated, but even my school counselor said that I chose some good textbooks, a couple are even grad school level texts. But anytime I get the opportunity to learn, I will. And you were a pre-med student too? I'm very jealous at all the education you got to have. I read the link and it got me thinking about the reptilian brain mentality... I wonder, and I've even said thins to my highschool friend, what's going on inside the mind of someone with a developmental disability (that's how I first realized what I wanted to do). I never thought about procrastination like that, so it makes me wonder what makes someone, for instance someone with ADD/ADHD, procrastinate. Maybe sub-consciously, they have a fear about whether they will be good enough or not, so that prohibits them from doing especially the bigger tasks. And with the amygdala, I was basically right about it being related to your feelings and whatnot. I believe this was covered in Abnomal Psych, but I would have to look in my textbook again. I took so many Psych classes, I'm almost getting them mixed up, but as long as I don't get the info mixed up, I should be good.

I hate to say it, but hold an amygdala in your hand and you will know so much more. Comparative Anatomy was one of the best classes I ever took, and I, who was so proud that I wouldn't accept any less than a high A in any class (we were all so damn competitive, but that was actually great), was glad to get a B in that one.
I got lucky. Everything came together. My marriage had broken up about 6 months before. I'd lost my job at the radio station I was working for (yeah, really lucky, huh?), and I had just gotten a few thousand dollars from some land my family decided to sell. I took a leap of faith and said I'll try this and see if I can make it work. So I went back to school. It was the best decision I ever made. I found grants and scholarships that more than paid for my books and classes. And before it was all over, I even got a job with the university.
We have no idea what it possible until we try. Even if you fail, better to fail spectacularly than not to try.
