Sorry, I'm getting started a few minutes late due to trying to get food ready.

Food is important. Mal to Inara: This distress wouldn't happen to be taking place in someone's pants, would it? He is awful to her. But she is probably accustomed to it by now.

Jayne: Don't know these people; don't pretty much care to. Mal: They're whores. Jayne: I'm in.

Because of the nature of this episode... I have to keep it on mute... lucky I have captions and lucky that I'm used to watching tv when it's mute, especially when I have my hearing aids out.
It's either that, or someone will come in and make me turn it off...
Unless they stop saying 'whores'.....

Sorry to hear that, Chloe. You got headphones you can plug in? It's much better with sound. And, for our first Mandarin dish this evening: "The House would tell you not to come. I know they ordered you to shun me when I left." "That isn't why I haven't seen you Nandi. The House can gen houzi bi diushi. [engage in a feces hurling contest with a monkey.]" - Nandi and Inara. Yay for the monkey mention!

It's on my TV... can't very well plug my headphones in a TV... And kudos to the writers for the monkey mention!

Love the Mandarin translation. Jayne seems to be the only one appreciating the full value of their location. He's even training his woman how to help him during the battle. Shepard looked surprised at how the last shepherd took payment in exchange for prayers.

Awww, I thought Malcolm was saving himself for Inara. About time! I don't know what to say about Burgess.

A little more Mandarin. Joss and the writers found they could get away with a lot of stuff by putting it in Chinese. "Got you, you niao shi de dugui! [piss-soaked pikers!]" - Wash escapes pursuit aboard Serenity.

Just finished the episode. Wasn't that fantastic?
Again, one of the episodes not aired until after the show was cancelled.

You're right about one thing, shows are a whole hell of a lot better with sound... the family is strict with stuff like that... one mention of a kid asking how babies are made or someone wearing a v-neck would make my grandmother turn off the episode, even if it was just in one episode and in a show she loves... while I can get away with a little bit... like the rest of the episodes seen so far with Firefly... I don't know, I just can't wait to be on my own for good.

If the show had stayed on the air, they probably would have become even more creative and outrageous with the Mandarin. This episode was definately like a space western, complete with horses, hover craft, space ship, bordello, and gunfights. Did you notice Mal chose the mano-o-mano end to the fight rather than shoot Burgess? Very exciting action. Serenity crew was fortunate to survive that fight, especially since Wash could not help them. I found it very interesting that the preacher was spraying them with holy water like our police use to quell riots, and he was very effective. I thought Inara was going to say she loved Mal.

Yeah, you can never count on Joss Whedon to do the expected. In the narrative construction they just ratcheted the dramatic tension up about a thousand percent with that move. And I agree, this episode probably felt the most like a space western of all of them. Now we come to the sad part. Only one more episode to go.

Favorites: Jayne: Don't know these people; don't pretty much care to. Mal: They're whores. Jayne: I'm in. Mal to Inara: This distress wouldn't happen to be taking place in someone's pants, would it? Asking Mal if he is "sly". Jayne's enthusiasm about being with the women. Kaylee's interest in the male companions and her frankness in saying no one was offering to service her. When Kaylee asked Wash if she was pretty, he was a gentleman and said "yes", but he never looked at her and kept his eyes toward Zoe. Jayne suddenly using formal words like "imminent violence" is upon us. Petaline telling baby boy to say goodbye to daddy. Mal's double heartbreak - failing to keep everyone safe and losing Inara. "Amazing Grace" being timeless.

Yes, that ending with 'Amazing Grace' was just beautiful. I also loved the expressions on River's face as she was watching the childbirth process in fascination, especially when she said 'Who do you think is in there?" It's said that one of the scenes cut from this episode had Zoe berating Jayne and Mal for sleeping with the Heart of Gold hookers, saying that no woman would ever act as they did and pointing out that none of the Firefly females took advantage of the male whores. At which point Kaylee looks suddenly guilty and slips quietly out the room...

I agree... Amazing Grace at the end was just beautiful. And I would have loved to see that deleted scene. And River, as always, is hilarious!

Hmmm, I guess Kaylee would look guilty because of the "thought" and not the "deed".

I think this show probably has a greater number of funny and iconic lines than any I've ever seen.
Even with all the ones Anti pointed out, I bet we could still come up with dozens more, just from that episode.
Mal: "Well, lady, I must say, you're my kind of stupid."
Jayne: "My John Thomas is about to pop off and fly around the room, there's so much tasty in here." Wash:"Would be you get your most poetical about your pecker."
Jayne: "Mal! Looks like we got some imminent violence!"
Inara: "It sounds like something this crew can handle. I can't guarantee they'll handle it particularly well, but..." Nandi: "If they've got guns and brains at all..." Inara: "They've got guns."
Mal: "This is my first mate, Zoë. I'll introduce you to the rest later. They're good folk." Jayne: "Can I start gettin' sexed already?" Mal: "Well, that one's kinda horrific."
Everyone got their copy of the movie in yet?

Oh right, thanks for reminding me... I've got to see if my library holds it. I'm planning on going either tomorrow or Tuesday. What is the movie called? Serenity?

Yes, the title is Serenity (made in 2005), and that's where I got my copy. I went to my library's website, and even though they didn't have it at mine, there was a copy elsewhere in the county system. I placed a hold on it and they sent it over to my branch for me to pick up.

Those are some funny lines. I laughed at them, but I could not remember all of them so I am happy you added them. Rewinding is complicated through the system I am using. I have Serenity in my "instant queue" so I am ready at any time.

I know how a library system works since I've worked (well, volunteered) at a few libraries since I was 16... my library does not have it in the system at all (the one in my county). The library in the next county over (my old library) does have it and in the branch I go to. So, it's possible for me to get the movie, it just may take awhile. I can also see the actual series in the system too... so I might get that as well.

Yes, I got the complete series and movie on 4 DVDs, and I highly reccommend it. Great special features, and commentary available on some of the episodes!

I can put it on hold and get it... the only downside is that we'd probably have to wait a week.

That's no problem. Go ahead and order it soon as you can.
And you might want to search for the documentary "Done the Impossible," which we can watch next, after we see the movie. It's available free on YouTube, but they don't have closed captioning on it there for some reason. However, the description of the DVD on Amazon says it does come with English subtitles.
