Someone I care for very much appears to be unhappy...of course, I don't know him that well, so I might be mistaken.
My mom said he looked sad when she last saw him. I know that he had cancer before, and I'm wondering if it's come back. I tried to e-mail him but it said that user doesn't exist... he knows MY e-mail address, and he hasn't contacted me recently...so, I'm afraid to reach out to him and see how he is.
I love him, but I'm still too chicken to contact him by phone.
Thoughts? Advice?

Stop being chicken. Your gut is always almost right. Listen to it.
What's the worst that could happen, huh?

I'd say, call him. It's better to call and it'd be nothing serious than to not call and it'd be serious, you know what I mean?

Okay...I'm an idiot. I spelled his e-mail address wrong the first time. I just sent him another one and it went through. Now, I get to wait and see when/if he replies. Prepare yourselves for either drama or immense happiness.

Thanks. My mom thinks he's adoreable, but she can't tell him that because it wouldn't be "professional." So...I sent the e-mail. Now I get to bite my nails like a lovesick 12 year old, wondering if he'll reply.

Aeryn, what does a 70 year old woman care about being 'professional'? That what's adorable.
I know that you have a great mom.
I sure do miss mine.

My mom is a history professor, and on the school board. So she cares about appearances.

I would call the person up, but do it positively and casually. Don't go calling him like "hey... I noticed you look upset... I'm worried about you..."
Just call up and say something like "Hey, hope you're doing good. Haven't seen you in a while. Let's get together again sometime soon. Hope to hear back from you."
It's all about how you approach it. Even if you actually are going through something, you don't want somebody calling all worried and depressed with you. Being casual is your best friend.

Dis is right I know when people ask me what's wrong it makes whatever it is worse. Be casual but genuine I find when people give me a few genuine words I feel way better. And don't feel like an idiot over mispellin the email once I locked myself out of here with mispelling my own email

I felt like an idiot because I did contact him...his response was polite, but I was hoping for something a little more personal.

I just said, "Hope all is well," and he said, "All is fine." He's not the most talkative man in the world.

To be fair, that's what every phone conversation will be like with every guy on the planet, myself included.

Monosyllabic would be a step up in conversations with some of the men I know. They seem to think grunts and sighs are sufficient to carry on a conversation.

A lot of us men view the phone as nothing more than a message delivery system as opposed to a means of prolonged conversation. It's typically because of this reason that most of us don't see phone calls as very personal. A guy spends most of his time on the phone paying bills, calling to see where someone will be in an hour, making arrangements, ordering food, and calling to see if the store has something in stock. We view it merely as a tool, so it becomes much harder for us to put ourselves in the "sociable time" mind set. Get him off the phone and on the internet, or over at your house, and you'll probably see the sociable mind turn on.

You know, my mom insisted that I accompany her somewhere last night. I didn't want to, but she didn't want to go alone. Guess who I saw? I wasn't expecting it, and nearly fainted. He looked SO good. I swear, I feel like a 12 year old girl with a crush.
