Perhaps gun control advocates should remember that it's the second amendment that makes the other amendments possible. Most importantly, the first. Hitler condoned gun control. So did Mao. So did Lenin. Japan has strict gun control and has a suicide rate higher than the U.S. Ditto for Sweden. Gun control laws only take guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens. Criminals....uh....they don't pay much attention to laws. That's probably why outlawing drugs hasn't stopped the illegal drug trade. Lots of deaths there, too. It is glaringly true that only law-abiding citizens will be prevented from owning guns. When law-abiding citizens are in an unsafe environment, especially in their own homes, they have the right to defend themselves.
Prohibition did not stop alcohol abuse just as other laws aimed at controlling drugs and guns have not stopped people who do not respect the law.

Exactamundo. Why do the gun control crazies not get this? An example of gun control gone crazy: [...] No one is debating the importance of keeping children safe. The question being asked is what’s child’s play and what’s not? There’s controversy at a Talbot County school after two 6-year-old boys were suspended while playing cops and robbers during recess and using their fingers to make an imaginary gun. “It’s ridiculous,” said parent Julia Merchant. This is the second time a Maryland child has been suspended for such play. Earlier this month, 6-year-old Rodney Lynch was suspended from his Montgomery County school after pretending to fire an imaginary gun more than once. --Kai Jackson CBS Baltimore

Just too funny that both Aeryn and SoCal are living in California that has the stickiest gun control laws in the country and that what the President has proposed and has signed in to law are not as strict as what California already has on the books. Carry on with your mindless hatred towards our president. We certainly did not have any say in those laws. The problem is we do have loads of vapid celebrities living here...the ones who'll gladly throw fundraisers and make moronic public service announcements to back anything this president proposes.

I have done some research on the recommendations and in fairness to President Obama, I see nothing that would prevent me from owning a gun. Therefore, in an effort to support my President’s proposal.
I am willing to give up my assault weapons. I am willing to give up my high capacity magazines. I am willing to limit myself to magazines with 10 rounds (if I don’t hit my target by the 10th bullet, I should run away). I am willing to give up my armor piercing ammunition. But, I am keeping my .38 I am willing to do this because I am not a criminal who is at war with other criminals. I am a law-abiding citizen.

You are willing to give those up but when will it end? How long until they try and ban the rest of them?

I am not a criminal who is at war with other criminals. I am a law-abiding citizen. I'm a law-abiding citizen as well, but if any criminal ever tries to break into my house or rob me, he's going get a giant hole blown in his ass. Trespassers will be shot. Survivors will be shot again.

You are willing to give those up but when will it end? How long until they try and ban the rest of them? I cannot deny that government has a history of proposing or creating laws, then tacking amendments when we are not paying attention. My own state has done that many times.
If people are opposing the current proposals as a means of preventing a complete ban in the future, I understand that reasoning. I don't understand why some are misleading us by making it sound as if a complete ban is being proposed now because that confuses the issue.I am now going to watch episodes of Haven that were postponed following one of the mass shootings.

Be careful of what you think is the reasonable thing to do: The following is the exact text of Martin Niemoller's address to the U.S. Congress. There are as many versions of Mr. Niemoller's address, (some call it a poem) as there are people who quote him. Here is Martin Niemoller's actual address to the U.S. Congress along with the page in the Congressional Record where it appears. The exact text of what Martin Niemoller said, and which appears in the Congressional Record, October 14, 1968, page 31636 is: "When Hitler attacked the Jews I was not a Jew, therefore I was not concerned. And when Hitler attacked the Catholics, I was not a Catholic, and therefore, I was not concerned. And when Hitler attacked the unions and the industrialists, I was not a member of the unions and I was not concerned. Then Hitler attacked me and the Protestant church -- and there was nobody left to be concerned."

When the government came for my assault weapon, I was not concerned because I did not own one.
When they came for my high capacity magazines, I was not concerned because I did not own one.
When they came for my armor piercing ammunition, I was not concerned because I had none.
Then the government came for my .38 and I looked around and no one was armed to protect my rights.

I thought people would be able to figure it out without my having to write my own verse.

The figure for the assault rifles is low because their aim is poor and they spray everything except their targets.

It's because most of the people who use assault rifles are cowardly gang members, who blast their guns while doing a drive by.
People like that should be executed by the police. In fact, I cheer whenever LAPD officers shot gang members.
