There was also a Bible verse in their about the meek inheriting the earth. And that was in the walking dead as well And that scripture Owen meany always had an issue with about the poor in spirit being blessed because they will see God That's very true! You're on the beam tonight. The guy who created the whole modern zombie genre, George Romero, had a line in Dawn of the Dead that sounds very much like a bible verse, but isn't, "When there's no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth."

That's from a few chapters back And I def thought that was an interesting dream with some ties to the Bible And interestingly, Randall Flagg also quotes the bible when talking to Lloyd in the scene just before that, but we don't get the same feeling when he does it, do we? Def not but seems as though Randall flagg used it only to create the desired effect in lloyds mind of being chosen

Ive got another one when nick is describing mother abigails house he mentions the breeze blowing the curtains in and outof the windows and that's one of the first images of daisy's house in the great gatsby Wow! That's a great one. I remember that scene vividly. You're coming up with some great connections tonight.

A moment of silence for Rita, who goes no further after chapter 41, other than to haunt Larry's mind.

Another connection from one of kings books, in it whenever the clown would appear things would seem frozen Mindanao like when Larry awoke to a sound and there wasn't even the sound of the crickets I think this change in the sounds and what not is kings way of letting us know a bad guy is entering the scene e

Its strange that you quote that I went to see that movie in theatres and that has always been something that stuck with me I never knew you were such a zombie fan. That's awesome. I just finished reading a zombie apocalypse novel that's coming out as a movie soon, World War Z by Max Brooks. It was very good. Perhaps we'll have to find a zombie novel to read as a group somewhere down the line.

Something about Rita and something Larry mentioned about her pill bottles
The way her hand was curled around the absent pill bottle like even in death she still needed her first larrys just like I believe the reason she laid down with Larry after what she had done because even though she knew she was dying she still needed her second larry

I was so shocked I felt i was screaming RITA! right along with larry What was your reaction I hadn't remembered that she died, but when it happened I wasn't surprised, as there was something about those pills that stood out to me when I read it. The really vivid part to me was Larry's reaction to it. We saw one of the most palpable scenes of horror in the entire book so far (to me) in the way it affected him. I think he will always be haunted by the fact that he didn't bury her.

I like the way that King ratcheted up the tension in a scene that should have been one of relief, when Stu meets Frannie and Harold--other survivors!
We know there are going to be problems with him and Harold, as they both are attracted to Frannie.
And in the beginning of Book II, in chapter 43, we (and Nick) meet one of my favorite characters, Tom Cullen. My laws!
M-O-O, that spells cow!

I thought so too but even he is admitting now Larry isn't a good guy so I'm unsure if he will be haunted by that fact and that's what I had been thinking too those pills were the underlying issue like the bad apple at the bottom that will eventually make all the apples go bad they tried to have a good relationship and thats what wastheir good apples piled atop that bad apple we saw when we first met rita taking her vitamins

I'm really glad that I can't remember what happens to Larry from the first time I read the book, but I have to say that he's not been portrayed as one of the 'good' characters so far. It seems like he could be easy prey for Randall Flagg, doesn't it?

There's a scene towards the end of chapter 43 where Tom and Nick are biking through Kansas and they see a scarey looking crow watching them. I think I read somewhere that King said that was a salute to Poe ("The Raven.")
It also reminded me of some of the scenes in The Omen movies, about a child who is the AntiChrist.

That also brings me to my next observation we are seeing a devious side to the bikes our characters are riding Larry realizes his bike is dangerous az well and nick is mentioning his shadow having a dark bike of its own and I wonder if that description is metaphoric for that dark man being there in the back of everything ready to slink to life if nick gives his attention and each moment dedicated to the bikes comes after life changing moments for nick it was after he'd had denied the dark man and realized he was glad to be alive no matter what was coming and for Larry after he realizes he isn't a good guy even Larry is uncertain about Larry and these similiar incidents lead us to compare the two and wonder where their differences will take each character

I had the same thought as you, that it was a reminder that the Dark Man was always there, just waiting for a way in.

Def I think we are on the same wave length everything you say links into one of my notes I wanted to say how much I admire stu for being so level headed even in escalating situations and how fitting it was to put the altercation between these three as the final.scene in book one and that last sentence in book one def lets us know there will be a very interesting series of events occurring between these characters it lets us know there is more

The chapters are getting longer, so it's harder to find a good stopping place. We could go to page 512 and the end of chapter 45, possibly, for next week. Or page 466, and the end of chapter 44. Which do you prefer?

And I also just thought of this nick sees his shadow (symbolic for dark man) as something separate whereas Larry sees his actual bike as something dangerous I wonder if that too is symbolic for the dark man and with the difference in these two characters mentioned in my previous posts would the actual bike and the shadow be symbolic for how close they are to Randall flaggs side Larry being closer so the bike is the symbolic item whereas nicks symbolic item is wholly seperate from himself larry's is right beneath him like his mother always spoke of Larry having a hard quality in him beneath the surface

There's another aspect that comes to me. Randall Flag is now traveling by car, whereas the 'good' characters are eschewing motorized transport and using bicycles. Larry is on a motorcycle, which could be thought of as kind of a motorized bicycle. That puts him straight in the middle between bicycle and car. Does that mean something? Is there something dark about using transport that depends on motors rather than muscles?
