Throughout the novel I'd been wondering if that fiasco with Stu, Frannie and Harold and the diary/ledger had never happened would Harold have been a different person, but I thought and thought on it and finally I realized Harold just simply matured into what he really was underneath. I believe he was lead as he said but I think Harold would have ended up heading west even simply out of pure curiosity as he said something drew him that way In a way, Harold was just the vessel to get Nadine to the west. And, of course, Harold thought HE was the important one. Big surprise.

I also liked this quote from Frannie
"Sometimes I think the superflu left us all alive but drove us all mad"
I guess some characters more than others lol

I'd forgotten that this was the chapter in which the Free Zoners eventually got the lights back on, but only for a very short time.
I can't help but think of Mother Abigail in terms of the light. Hers was there just long enough to get the right people in, then it went out as well.

I love that it's Larry and Frannie working together in the scene where they're breaking into Harold's house. We know that these are two good people, and that they are not lovers, unlike Harold and Nadine--that they love others in fact. I think somehow it makes the action on their part stronger that it is the two of them doing this rather than Larry and Lucy or Frannie and Stu.

Some knowledge of the end of times seems to be upon them, as they seem to know that even if Harold sees they have been there, at this point it doesn't matter very much.

I can only be on for a few more minutes, so let me put the rest of my comments on chapter 57 down.
They steal Harold's ledger in which he talks about his glee in killing Stu, and possibly Frannie too. Unfortunately shee doesn't know to pay attention to the walkie-talkie box, but who would?
Nadine then breaks into Nick's place and reads Nick's notes. Then she places the bomb in a closet. She has short-lived regrets as she was leaving, but then 'she felt a blackness creeping over her vision.
As she has this experience, my favorite sentence is 'The Dark Man entered her, and he was cold.'

I would hope for a resurrection for Nick. He's my favorite character. Well, him and KoJack.

I suspect nick had to go on as did M.A. some people are like shooting stars other people see their light and wanna hold onto them but no matter how hard you try to keep them there with you relishing in their light they are always bound to shoot off to be something amazing and the rest of us simply gotta stand and stare at the beauty of them fulfilling their purpose

The very end of the chapter, Stephen King sets in one of my favorite places: a drive-in movie theater. And the Dark Man's voice comes across the speakers.
Nadine's hair goes all gray. Her body recognizes what she has done even if she does not. She tells Harold that they have to leave and go to a safer place. Even if he wanted to get out of it at this point, he could not. Nadine's last line in the chapter is "Too late, Harold."

Some knowledge of the end of times seems to be upon them, as they seem to know that even if Harold sees they have been there, at this point it doesn't matter very much. I liked the way Larry put it if Harold doesn't have anything to be feel guilty about then he will just figure it was some kids busting out windows in abandoned houses and if he does have something to feel guilty about then he'll worry plenty and he deserves to worry Something I just thought of if Harold's house looks empty an everyone says home is where the heart is was that kings sly way of telling us Harold's heart is empty!

Nadine's last line in the chapter is "Too late, Harold." I marked that same scene noting Harold seemed fearful after realizing the dark man spoke to Nadine and it did that to her hair and he says well what if I don't want too anymore I wondered if that's Harold's first confession of his fear And isn't that just like an immature person get some ruckus stirred up and then decide against what he's done I have wished Harold and Nadine would reform their ways long ago but I realize those two are off their rockers for sure Harold never spoke truer words than when he said I am on a great adventure... Yea an adventure to crazy town and he's not traveling alone he's got crazy old white haired losing her mind and looking forward to it nadine

Yea an adventure to crazy town and he's not traveling alone he's got crazy old white haired losing her mind and looking forward to it nadine I have a bit more sympathy for Nadine than I do Harold. She, at least tried to get out of her destiny. It was a case of too little too late more for her than for him, I think, because her wish to save herself was a bit stronger than his. At the very last moment he says to her 'What if I don't want to?" and she replies, "Too late." I think that means that Flagg will deal with him no matter which choice he makes, but we all know which way Harold's going.

Chapter 58. I love it when Fran and Larry are at Stu and Fran's place and all of a sudden Larry hears Joe playing and singing 'Baby Can You Dig Your Man?" He spills his coffee. Stu's characterization of Harold as Silverfish from Watership Down is spot-on perfect to me. http://img./albums/m537/mistermoonlight1/smiley-laughing002.gif[/img]

I noted that part however I have not read watership down For some reason that part of the chapter reminded me of the catcher in the rye I think maybe because they described silverweed as having a personality of someone that can see outside the normal things he sees what others are blind to and I saw Holden like that he had a way of explaining things that seemed incomprehensible with a very simple explanation and also I got the feel silver weed was set apart from others rabbits the way Holden was with people of course
