Here's a place where we can be as off-topic as we'd like, yet still be within the literary purview!
One of our first synchro-reads (before we had the book club) was The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, which was a lot of fun. The new movie of that novel opens in just a few days, on May 10th:
Nobody does spectacle quite like Baz Luhrman.

On my tablet, I downloaded an eBook through the local library system using OverDrive. Is anyone else using OverDrive?

Chloe, thanks for responding. Have you had any problems "renewing" after the initial loan period expired?
I do not know if I will finish the book before the weekend.

Yeah, I still haven't figured out how to actually 'renew' the book. I just usually check it right out or put it on hold.

Okay. After I asked the question, I received a phone call and the tablet went to sleep. When I turned it back on, the book page had frozen. I tried different things and finally "remove OverDrive from desktop". When I tried to reopen the book, it kept "loading" for 15 minutes. I shut the tablet down. Now, it will not move past the N screen. None of the on-line forums have a solution. I cannot imagine why leaving it open to a book page would cause this much trouble. I was at a good part in the book and now I have wasted hours.

What kind of tablet do you use? I use a Kindle Fire, so I'm not sure if I'll be of any help.

Nook Color Oh...I appreciate it, but I will take it to the store to see if a tech can do anything. According to the 100+ people who had the same problem, nothing has helped them - including the techs. I really want to read the book, so I just downloaded it to my phone. I did not want to do that.

So MANY ways to tease....
...so LITTLE time...
The Astounding Gadget Queen has been betrayed by another gadget!!!!!
Besides a tome regarding civil litigation...I am ALSO re-reading The Great Gatsby...
And I am reading BOTH sans difficulty!
And this ALL thanks to a technological wonder....
...invented in 1440...(and yet I feel no need to upgrade)
"In 1440, German inventor Johannes Gutenberg invented a printing press process that, with refinements and increased mechanization, remained the principal means of printing until the late 20th century. The inventor's method of printing from movable type, including the use of metal molds and alloys, a special press, and oil-based inks, allowed for the first time the mass production of printed books." History of the Printing Press
Astounding Angel...
I thought tablets were supposed to...
...you know...?
...make reading...
...easier?

Darwin, I am still awake ...shame on you for teasing me ...when I have been betrayed by my favorite toy.
You have strong muscles while I needed a wheelbarrow to transport King's tomes. *laughs*

Perhaps you are.... ...dreaming.... ...so when you wake up.... ...check back here and make certain... ...and if it turns out that I have indeed teased you... I will make sure I do it right. *hopes that is helpful*

However...The Astounding Gadget Queen did not give up. After 4 hours of sleep with pictures of the Nook dancing through my mind, I awakened with determination to prevail. I gave the Nook a stern lecture, attempted a factory reset ...much to my amazement ...same thing I tried at least 10 times last night ...it worked! I now have a clean slate...just not the kind I have been striving for. Darwin, next time I get a hard cover book, I will use it for bicep and tricep curls. Then, maybe I will not need the tablet.

ASTOUNDING Gadget Queen...
...er....
ASTOUNDING ANGEL...
Kudos on your successful determination to prevail against the technological gremlins...
And...
ASTOUNDING ANGEL wrote (on another thread):
You should definitely NOT be lugging around large books of the Stephen King variety in THAT kind of heat!
As someone somewhere once accurately observed (Wait! I think it was me!)...
...you could use one of those books to knock down old buildings...
...or prop up a leaning ship...
...or fight off BOTH Godzilla and King Kong...
Part of my muscular development was developed by carrying books for ladies...
Were I in your neighborhood...I would be pleased to do so for you...if your tablet is (and probably will be) undependable again.
But I am certain...
...a substitute for me carrying your books could be found...
...if you flashed your smile...
...as no doubt VAST HORDES of eagar men would swoop in to your assistance.

*laughs* Astounding Angel is framing the following promise - in case of emergency. Darwin wrote:My Tim gave me his tablet when he returned to the Navy. I think of him whenever I use it. Does anyone feel just a little bit guilty now? ...probably not. P.S. Walking around with a tome like Civil Litigation will certainly catch the eyes of the ladies. Reading it...right... *laughs*

There is a BRASS BAND...
...followed by a suitable parade...
...with balloons and fireworks...
VERY Disney-esque...!
EXCEPT for the half-cow on the spit...
...accompanied by...
(in keeping with the culinary theme)
... BANANA SPLITS!!!!!

Yesterday at work I saw a man with a book and of course me being the girl that harasses anyone I see with a book I ended up in a conversation with this man we talked about many books but there was one he told me about and as he spoke of this novel and the main character tears came to his eyes and I thought if this character impacted this man so much then I must meet him for myself I must know about this novel and so I thought I'd share the title with you my devoted book club members and I'd also like to make this novel one of my suggestions
Follow the Free Wind by Leigh Brackett
Beckwith was known far and wide as a runaway slave, a renegade, a horse thief, and a fearsome warrior who had taken over a hundred scalps, among other things. But the real James Beckwith was even bigger than his mythic persona. Beckwith was as wild and untamed as the land he loved and conquered. Fiercely proud and bitterly stubborn, he seemed to enjoy making enemies with his displays of harsh courage.-summary provided by google

I have looked around and it does not appear to be available locally. If this one is chosen, I will keep looking.

May the next book for the synchro-read be less than 450 pages? I am being facetious, but really, I re-read The Stand so I could join the discussion but that now seems like a long time ago.

Just a heads up for anyone interested
FLOWERS IN THE ATTIC IS SCHEDULED FOR A REMAKE ON LIFETIME JANUARY 18
There was a short teaser trailer released I believe it was only thirty one seconds and recently there was a longer trailer released Now the story is a difficult one to read featuring many uncomfortable topics and I imagine the film shall be much the same featuring again hard to watch scenes and what not so if view at your own risk
But anyone who knows me knows that the novel Flowers In The Attic is my favorite and that I'm looking forward to the remake as the first movie adaption was well not what I'd expected But there are a couple of us that are planning a synchro watch of the lifetime remake and if you would like to join us please do so I shall post further details here as well as the book club and movie/synchro watch threads
