Earlier this month, NBC and "Hannibal" executive producer Bryan Fuller decided to pull an episode of the show from its U.S. run, citing their own content concerns -- and instead made a condensed version available online as a web series
"Hannibal" will no longer air on NBC's Salt Lake City affiliate KSL, in the latest decision by the Mormon-owned station to drop a NBC series.
When it comes to "Hannibal," KSL cites the show's graphic violence and said last week's episode -- which featured a killer who sliced open and arranged the flesh of his victims to simulate angel wings -- was the tipping point.
"After this last week's episode, it just had too much graphic content for us," KSL vice president of marketing, research and promotion Tami Ostmark tells the Salt Lake Tribune. "This is beyond anything we've put on our station before. This is too graphic to be on regular TV. It should be a cable show. We've talked to NBC, and that's how we feel about it."
The episode was indeed disgusting, and if KSL doesn't want to air the show it's their choice. But in the spirit of letting viewers make their own choices, local rival KUCW -- Salt Lake City's CW affiliate -- has stepped in to broadcast "Hannibal" on Saturday evenings following the station's run of "Saturday Night Live." KUCW general manager Richard Doutre Jones tells the Salt Lake Tribune, "We're happy to air all of the NBC shows KSL doesn't."
Here's the official announcement KSL posted to its Facebook page:
PROGRAMMING NOTE: After viewing the past few episodes, as well as receiving numerous complaints from viewers, KSL-TV will cancel the airing of the NBC show "Hannibal" on Thursday evenings.
This decision was made due to the extensive graphic nature of this show. The time slot will be replaced with a special edition of KSL 5 News at 9 p.m.
NBC remains a valued partner to KSL-TV. KSL is confident that with the proliferation of digital media, those who wish to view the program can easily do so.

This is a scene from the episode KSL decided was the last straw. The serial killer would slice a husband and wife down the spine, spread the skin and make it look like wings. He would then place them in prayer position to watch over him while he slept. I watched the series and the problem I had with this image is that we are to believe the individual did this to himself and somehow suspended himself in the scaffolding.

I found this show easier to stomach than The Following, but maybe I just liked the storyline better....

Hannibal as an anti-hero before becoming a full-fledged villain sorta grows on ya.... he'll eat your liver with a nice chianti and some favra beans, but he'll smile at least!

Even "Body of Proof" is too graphic for me. Or was.
But I liked the characters and the fact that it was sort of a comedy.

imagine RED DRAGON, the first Hannibal Lechter story, if it mixed-in CSI and MIAMI VICE to the story. You get MANHUNTER!add in the villain from X-Men 2 as Hannibal, then it's THAT much cooler! it's elementary!

I am a novice when it comes to Hannibal.
I thought Will Graham was a character that was created for the NBC series.
I'm sure "Grissom"'s Will Graham was not subjected to the grisly displays like the current one.
SPOILER < < < In the last episode, Hannibal gruesomely killed his "friend" and framed someone else for it.

read RED DRAGON- it has more of the backstory on the Graham/Lechter relationship.... don't rely on that Ed Norton travesty of a movie. anyone else think it was a good idea not to have him as THE HULK again in AVENGERS? for the big green guy, less is more!!
as for the cannibalistic psychiatrist, not sure if there's enough to flesh out in an entire tv series, but NBC does. and if they can come up with a sly way for them to pay hommage to La Chiffre from Casino Royale, they gotta!

The most disturbing thing about this show....is that NBC placed it at the end of the Thursday night comedy block.

Once again, you are correct.
The only thing that I might add is that ER was not evil.
When NBC, or anyone, mentions the name Hannibal...I just get feelings of pure evil.
Sorry.

how about Kerry Weaver, one of the higher-ups at the hospital. she's so tough, she even dresses down HIGHLANDER'S HMO exec/Lex Luthor actor, Clancy Brown! and 'Rocket' Romano... the smug ER surgeon... what a way to go. don't get on the 'coptor, STILL die in the accident.... it could be argued that this was the moment ER jumped the shark. it was still pretty good tv, right 'til the end! it's elementary!

I think that you are way too smart for your own good.
I think that you are swimming circles around us.
Slow down and take a moment.
There are times that I have no fucking idea what you are talking about.
...at other times...I find you to be spot on.

Geez...2 minutes of this clip is worst than anything I have seen on Hannibal. Hannibal shows the results of the torture, but not the acts of violence. This made me squeamish. I see why the actor was given the role of Hannibal.

Well, at least in years past, the bad guys were bad guys. They weren't portrayed as some sort of hero. They usually got their comeuppence at the end of the show. I'm sure that wasn't 100% of the time, but these days, all these bad guys seem to be the central character of the show, its hero and everyone else is sidelined or peripheral to the story or are just as bad in their own way. I thought the first movie was disgusting and won't watch this series. I did watch the original "Manhunter" sometime in the 80's with (?) William Peterson as the FBI guy. It was startling then, but pales with what they're doing on TV now. The kids need more Captain Kangaroo and less Hannibal Lecter. But I find the general crudeness on TV started in 1971 with "All in the Family." Everythings has gone down from there. Yes, it was a comedy show, but it started the crude humor (no one had heard toilet flushing on TV before), racial humor and religious condemnation. Hey, Norman Lear: thank you very little.

Excellent review. I remember when the changes started also. There was a time when we knew the bad guys were punished. Then some movies ended abruptly - leaving it to the viewers to draw their own conclusions. I always felt cheated when they did that. I wanted to see justice and I was not familiar with the concept of the anti-hero. I do not go to the movies to see Hannibal type movies, but when they create a series like this, my curiosity is piqued. I guess I have been corrupted by TV over a period of time.

Thursday nights on NBC were cultivated to bring a certain sense of home...family...and comedy.
It was a time for comfort..a warm fireplace...and the occasional pizza delivery.
Hannibal...or any other show that might fit that nightmare...are not, and should not EVER be welcome there.

Well, I'm not exactly pure. I did watch evey episode of "The Following," even though I mentioned that it seemed to be glorifying the main character bad guy. And his followers were, in some ways, worse than he was....just killing because someone they admired told them to. Yikes. I do hope that the final episode finds him dead. I would hate to see him live to hurt people again.

This brings to mind a quote from some of my reading...
G.K. Chesterton:
"Fairytales don't teach children that dragons exist. Children already know that dragons are real. Fairytales teach children that dragons can be defeated."
...and don't we ALL need that kind of assurance in life from time to time?
Thus I REALLY like it when the bad guys are defeated.

It is difficult to imagine the same person playing Lechter and the Captain. Great range indeed. No offense intended Spoonie, but I must agree with Timmy's I just smile and hope that the meaning becomes clear as we continue. I do enjoy your wit, extensive knowledge of various genre, and your humor - although I do not always recognize the references.
