BRAND NEW CLUPER FACT:
Kryptonite was introduced in the 1940s radio version of the Superman series and when the actor who portrayed Clark Kent/Superman would take off for a short amount of time, since they couldn't do reruns on the radio, they would have another actor fill in for the time period that the original actor was off and to explain why the voice sounded different, they created the explaination of Kryptonite to explain to the hearers why the voices sounded different!

Most of the big character development in the Superman mythos happened in the radio shows. There are probably more radio episodes about Superman than in issues of comics and episodes of TV and movie appearances combined.
I just watched an interview with Alan Moore and he said that the founders of the comic book industry were bootleggers! They told the young men from Cleveland, Ohio that while they were off fighting WWII that they needed them to sign over the rights to Superman so they could keep publishing the comics ... but the rights would be given back to them when they returned from the war. Truth, justice and the American way? Maybe one out of three.

I remember that kryptonite was created on the radio show. And let me give a quick plug for radio drama as an artform. Nothing they could show you on a movie or television screen could ever replace what you created in your own mind while listening to these shows. I remember how Bud Collyer would do the change to Superman in voice by having Clark say 'this looks like a job for Superman!' and his voice would actually change during the sentence so that by the end he sounded like Superman. I'd heard about how Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster got screwed out of the rights to the character they'd created, Superman, but never knew that 'patriotism' was one of the reasons given. Those jerks.

DC Comics knew Alan Moore wanted absolute control over the new characters he created in "Watchmen" so they told him they needed the rights only as long as "Watchmen" was in print and then all rights would revert to him. Before that, no comic book series/graphic novel had stayed in print for more than about 6 months. "Watchmen" has been kept in print ever since. DC knows what the intent of the contract was but they are enforcing the letter of it. Now they are doing prequel series about the characters Moore created for "Watchmen."

Wow... those people really are jerks... I have a radio app on my Kindle Fire and I had found out that it has some old time radio stations full of stories that you (Timmy, Moon, David, and others) would remember, including the old Superman stories where I hear Bud Collyer say: "This looks like a job for Superman!" and ending that sentence sounding like Superman. It's wonderful to hear the old stories! I've always been the type of person who likes the older times. There are times where I wish I've lived in the 70s.

I never heard the radio programs ... I just heard about them. But I do remember reading in the comic books what television areas were showing "The Adventures of Superman." It was the only reason I was happy to move into the Cleveland area. As soon as we moved and I had seen about 2 episodes, the station started running "Gentle Ben" instead -- a story about a boy (Ron Howard's brother) and his 'pet' bear Ben. I think Dennis Weaver from "Gunsmoke" and later "McCloud" was the Dad -- a Florida everglades wildlife officer.
There were good old days, but it was YEARS between any live action super hero shows on TV. The anticipation of the Batman TV show coming on the air was almost impossible to stand. We got no spoilers ... only a fast glimpse of the Batmobile coming out of the Batcave. There was no hint that it would be a campy show rather than a serious take on the characters.

I lived and loved during the 1970s, and all I can tell you was it was much greater than you could imagine. But you know, we all do that. And I've often thought that I was born during the wrong century and should have been alive during the 30s and 40s when radio was the dominant medium. And the women looked so hot.

Okay, so maybe I meant to say the 30s and 40s since that was the time the radio was dominant, it's those stories I hear. Obviously, I never was good at History... But when you think about it, if we were born at a different time than when we were actually born, there may be some people you know now that you never would have known!

I watched all of those shows, and I remember how exciited I was to see Batman appearing on TV. And how, despite the fact that this was a campy take on the hero I loved, at least I could see him on television. He wasn't anything like the Batman I knew in the comics, but it was something. And that seems like what we've had to say way too often in the journey to bringing DC characters to life, unfortunately. We want these characters to be as real as Alex Ross draws them. Is that too much to ask? And many thanks to Christopher Nolan for finally getting us to that point.

I always felt like I was born at the wrong time. I got to work thinking that building an ideal work came from people doing their part in a conscientious, selfless, dedicated way. I found people that didn't want to do much who thought no matter what they did, it wouldn't effect the product or the world in any way. No one wanted to even look at the standards developed through hard success and fail experiences. It was too hard to research anything or look up information in a binder on their desks. It just didn't matter at all. I heard about people who died to build dams and bridges and felt that their sacrifice was for the greater good. I looked around and saw people whose motto was to do the least possible for the most money and never do anything you weren't forced to so ... no matter how easy. All you had to do to look like a super hero at a company was to show up to work on time. And no one knew what to make of me ... when I'd show up with everyone and then go home with everyone the following day after working a 33 hours for 16 hours pay at a whopping $4.50 an hour. My generation learned to brag big about things they never did and complain about how little they got for it.

I know as a child of the 1980s, I liked the music and it did come out with some amazing movies like Back to the Future, Supergirl, Somewhere in Time and other fun stuff. I still remember being a little toddler at about 2 or 3 when Reagan was saying "Tear down this wall" I didn't know why he was saying it but it sounded fun, I also remember when the Berlin Wall came down and how happy was, didn't understand what it meant at the time but i was happy about it. I also remember watching the Cosby Show and Family Ties and how those were classic family types of shows. But I know that I have seen stuff done decades before my birth and I felt like I didn't fit in because I knew a lot about Vietnam, War World 2, The Romanof family and more and most of my classmates didn't. Oh well, that's life right?
