Sterling Brown won a Golden Globe and he won last night too. Chrissy wasn't even nominated last night, though. I've seen enough clips of him that if I were to watch the show, he would be second to Chrissy as a reason to watch. I did not know he won last night. Good for him. He has had to show more depth and range of emotion than anyone else on the show and that probably put him more in the spotlight.

The Fifth Wheel
SEASON 2, EPISODE 11 • NEW
9:00 PM ON WBALDT 11 • TV-14 • STEREO • CC
The Pearsons come together under unexpected circumstances; Jack surprises the family with a summer vacation. "Unexpected" circumstances is right. When the counselor asked the immediate family to participate in a conference with Kevin, I did not expect the fireworks. The characters have played their roles so well, I could understand each of their point-of-view. The siblings were able to hug each other when it was over. However, there is an underlying theme that their mother has disappointed each of them during parts of their formative years. I enjoyed the not-immediate family members (Beth, Toby, and Miguel) comments about how they view the Pearson clan.

This was a good episode in which there was an unlikely outcome.
Kate and the girl she gets irritated at in the self-help group became friends.

Kevin made amends to people he harmed. Sophie said good-bye forever, but she forgave him. Charlotte returned his pendant and he was very relieved.
Randall decided to buy an apartment building and fix it up for the residents. Beth helped him with the planning, but he then agreed to fix everything immediately. That was not a good idea. Kevin came and helped to do a lot of the repairs.
Kate finally accepted that her father really does see her as beautiful.
All of the siblings bailed on Jack right before the Superbowl game even though watching it was their tradition. He handled it well because he was a very loving man.
At the end, we caught glimpses of the fire that ended Jack's life.

The next episode will be a real tearjerker because we will see what happened to Jack and how the rest of the family was rescued. I am so glad the fire was not Jack's fault.
It will air after the Superbowl on Sunday, February 4, at 10:15 PM. Add extra time in case the game runs long.

“The Car” lessened the pain some after seeing how Jack died. I am so glad they did not have him die in the blaze. That would have been too horrific to bear.
I really liked the scene where Jack explained to the salesman what his family meant to him. I also enjoyed seeing him make Kevin and Randall walk home, then he told them about his relationship with his brother.

I enjoyed this so much, even when disagreements erupted. The disagreements exposed how people really felt about their relationship with other members and that led to better understanding.
It seems like Toby is bonding with his future brothers-in-law.
Kevin bumped into his co-star and she told him her part was cut from the movie. Toby's advice to Kevin was to call Ron Howard and tell him that cutting him from the movie would be a big mistake. Kevin followed that advice and learned that Ron had no intention of cutting him from the movie. Ron was nice about it.
As always, I loved the flashbacks of Jack and Rebecca.

This was a warm episode that showed how a normal loving family could change someone’s life.
The entire episode focused on Deja’s life with her mother and while she was in foster homes. She was a loving daughter even though her mother let her down many times. Her mother kept helping her boyfriend financially and that caused their electricity to be turned off. Eventually, they were evicted and were sleeping in the car during the cold winter temperatures.
Although Randall was in Las Vegas, he was worried about Deja. Beth became angry when he would not stop worrying about it. When they arrived home, they checked on Deja and learned she had been evicted. They found Deja and her mother asleep in a car and brought both of them to their home.
We saw how happy and full of laughter Deja was in the Pearson household. Her mother saw that too and decided to leave without Deja.

The Wedding
SEASON 2, EPISODE 18 • FINALE 3/13/18, 9:00 PM ON WBALDT 11 • TV-14 • STEREO • CC
The Pearsons' story begins in 1979, on the day Jack and Rebecca's triplets Kate, Kevin and Randall joined the family -- though not in the way anyone expected. This emotional saga of love, life and loss spans 35 years and three generations.

The season finale was excellent. It was about Kate’s wedding to Toby, but we were treated to a 20-year vow renewal between Jack and Rebecca in the setting for the wedding. We later learned it was a recurring dream Kate had been having for weeks. Jack and Rebecca were beautiful and I enjoyed seeing them together.
I was not sure Kate was going to make it to the ceremony on time and her brothers headed out to search for her. There were some good emotional scenes between them.
Deja’s mother has given up parental rights and Deja has been acting negatively since that time. Last time we saw her, she was vandalizing a car, probably Randall’s.
Flash forward scenes for next season seemed tragic, but we have to wait and see.

Thank you. I ignored the 3" x 4 1/2" box in the middle of the screen and scrolled through the article. It was a factual and unemotional summary of each episode of the season. That box has nothing to do with requiring you to subscribe. I'm glad you got through but I don't know what my problem is. I'm shown the entire article for a fraction of a second and then I get to see only the first few lines until I subscribe.

12.643 million viewers for this episodeI truly enjoyed This Is Us. It was an emotional episode that highlighted how the family copes with disagreements and disappointments. But I did not need tissues. The “Poems For My Son” was a beautiful gift William left for Randall and I loved hearing William recite the poetry. I enjoyed seeing William and Beth sitting in the little park and being honest with each other. That became significant when Beth took Randall there and made a rather shocking suggestion that would change their lives. Kate and Toby tried to celebrate the twins' birthday with Kevin, but Toby was jealous that Kate and Keith are so close. Kevin has become more sensitive than he was in the beginning of the series and he bowed out so Toby could be alone with Kate. Kevin was happy to see that his lady love was waiting for him. I was happy when Rebecca told Jack to come home. I was really touched by his response; it was filled with so much honesty, remorse, and determination. Then, it was followed by the heart-wrenching clue to what happened to Jack. After seeing the clue, I do not want to actually see it happen. It would be traumatic and I do not want to see him suffer. I really liked William's reading the poems too, and the scene with Beth. I wondered how he could be nominated for season 2 and now I know. So Randall is a stay-at-home Dad. Since I know they eventually adopted an older girl, I don't have to worry too much about Beth and Randall disagreeing on adoption, and we know it won't be a baby. I did laugh at the comment about wondering if they had a supply of babies left at fire stations. I was so happy Rebecca and Jack made up. I liked Jack's attempt to make things right but the man wasn't going to hire Rebecca as a solo act. I tried to enjoy the birthday celebration. I was hoping Kate would get the job, but now that she knows why she didn't, things are better. Kevin once again gets to use his money and influence. I hated that he threw away a perfectly good cake. And how could anyone eat Kevin? I sure am glad I already knew what happened to Jack. That final scene would have been a much bigger shock.

Seeing Jack's struggle and his honesty with his family makes me love him even more. I was surprised by Kate's resentment of her mother, but it is easy to understand. When her mother said "eventually Kate would be very confident in front of the crowds", that was her way of saying Kate did not appear confident. Toby handled the situation very well. Kevin has matured very much from the selfish guy in early episodes. He is adorable (and needy), and I laughed very hard when he appeared in a diaper. Beth pushed Randall into agreeing to foster an older child, and that is going to disrupt their home. Jack is not the perfect father after all. That's okay. He doesn't behave like so many who have a drinking problem. Kate is obviously closer to her father, so no wonder her father's death hurt so much. Yes, Toby handled it well. I want to know who drove when Kate left. Kate did the right thing, she sang well, and she overreacted to Rebecca's comments. It's a shame Rebecca discouraged Kate so much in school. She didn't mean to. On the other hand, after we got to see all of Jack from behind, Rebecca was behind a translucent shower door. She did look hot in her nightie that appeared about to fall off. Poor Kevin ended up losing most of his family for his big moment. On the other hand, he handled things well. Somehow I can picture Nathan Lane doing the same thing on Broadway, and no one could say anything bad about him. Knowing how things turned out for Randall and Beth is helpful here. I guess it's no surprise Beth didn't like being there, but Randall's support for Kevin surprised me after he seemed to be in agreement with Beth before. It was a big deal to fly all that way.

I enjoyed this episode even though there was only a little, short-lived joy. When Kate visited the movie set, it was fun to see Sly Stallone. He held conversations with both Kate and Kevin about their father. Unfortunately, Kate talking about their father right before Kevin's big scenes caused him to mess up. Then, they had a big fight. They made up later. Randall was excited and in a hurry to meet their first foster child. Deja arrived and was obviously a troubled person. Randall tried to bond with her, but so far she has shown a lot of bad temper. Rebecca and Jack are regaining their closeness and Jack is opening up more about his struggles. I really like them. That was a fun scene on the movie set. Sly was wonderful. It's such a shame his comment threw Kevin off and messed up that scene. And we learned why they are stunt men, though it didn't look like the type of move that should have required one. Knowing how things turned out with Deja I wasn't too concerned. But Randall's daughter was so great with both Deja and William. I'm not that crazy about watching Rebecca and Jack struggle but if there's anyone I would enjoy watching as they go through it, it's them.

This episode, I wanted to cry for Kevin. He is trying so hard to save his career following the injury. It is sad because I think rushing the healing process will make the injury worse. Last week, Kate told Rebecca that she makes her feel bad. This week, we saw Rebecca had problems with her mother. When her mother visited them during a snow storm, it got so bad that Jack and little Kevin, both of whom were sick with chicken pox, got out of bed and shoveled the mother’s car out so they could make her leave. Wow! Randall is still trying very hard to bond with Deja. It seemed like she was willing, but then she cut her hair off after Beth styled it. Kevin was determined not to lose his movie role or hold up production. Beth and Deja had such a great scene together. I was relieved when Deja's hair looked good again. Deja was so surprised things weren't worse after what she did at the bowling alley. Jack winked at Rebecca so I thought he wasn't really sick. Rebecca's mother must really be bad if they shoveled snow when they were sick. I had chicken pox when I was six but I don't remember anything about it.

I really enjoyed seeing the way Jack was dedicated to teaching Kevin to be nice to his brother, Randall. He took them on a nature trip in the woods and explained they should be able to trust and depend on each other. While on the trip, Rebecca received a call that Jack’s father was dying. She could not reach Jack, so she went to visit. I was surprised it was the first time they met. Jack decided to remain in the woods with the boys and said there was no message to give to his father. There was a scene where Jack’s father took him on a fishing trip, but stopped at a pub on the way. He remained in the pub a long time and left Jack in the car. After a while, a boy sat up in the back seat. Nicky Pearson was his name. Was he Jack’s brother? What happened to him? Kevin ran out of Vicodin and became upset that his doctor would not refill the prescription for him. He kept drinking booze at a gala promoted by Sophie and at which he was to be auctioned to benefit her hospital. He was so busy tracking down a doctor to get Vicodin, he failed to hear his name being called. Sophie was very embarrassed and upset. Deja went to the gala with Randall. He startled her during dinner and she went to the ladies’ room. There was a funny scene where both Randall and Kevin were staring at the ladies’ room door. Finally, Randall went inside and stood there until Deja told him what happened to her at one of the homes. That was a good moment. Kate told Toby they are having a baby. Toby was hilarious because he was so overjoyed. I liked the camping trip as well but it was a shame they would have had to cut it short to see Jack's father and an even bigger shame that only Rebecca and Kate got to see him. And you could tell there were no cell phones back then. Well, not for ordinary people, anyway. When Jack was with his father, I wondered why Nicky wasn't there. I forgot he hadn't been introduced yet. I like not having to learn these things for the first time. The scenes that showed Nicky, including later with the photos, were nice. Sophie was right to be upset about Kevin. He really needed to be there for the auction to benefit. I liked Randall's comment about auctions. I also liked how Randall had to wait outside the ladies' room and how women reacted. I got concerned when I thought I saw a woman after he went in there. I guess it was nice that Deja told him what happened. I didn't know the name of the woman who annoyed Kate so much at support group meetings. She clearly had no weight problem. But then Kate ran into her car and for some odd reason, they became friends. Her name is Madison! Kevin's Madison, right? Toby getting so excited was just weird.

This was a wonderful Halloween episode. Everything did not go as planned, but it showed the 10-year old’s personalities were already forming. At 10, Randall drew a map of the best houses to visit for candy and was upset when Kate and Kevin wanted to do something different. As an adult, he wanted to install a ceiling fan for the baby’s room and became very upset when that did not go as planned. At 10, Kate was desperate for a boy to like her. As an adult, she liked a guy and went with him even though it was not right. Kevin has two distinctly sides to his personality. At 10, he bribed the boy Kate liked to go in the haunted house with her and hold her hand. That was sweet, but as an adult, when his friend invited him to a party to celebrate getting an acting job, Kevin tried to get the producer to give him the role. That was scummy. Beth went into labor and birthed a girl. Randall looked at the brochure that had the name of the fan he tried to install and named Tess after the fan – Tessana. The most dramatic scene was Rebecca talking to newborn Randall and then to newborn Tess in the hospital. That was well done. I liked Halloween. When I saw how Jack and Rebecca were going to look, I thought Sonny and Cher. Oh, it was them. And I couldn't believe anyone would say what is Cher without Sonny? Seriously? She's the one who had the successful solo career. He just went into politics. And how sad Randall found out he was a "replacement". I liked seeing 2008. Naturally Randall and Beth would support Obama. Rebecca was so cute. Now we know where the name Tess came from. That's better than a billboard for Angus beef. Randall knows how to fix stuff but I don't. Or does he? Did we know Kate was a waitress? I didn't think of Kevin's action in the way the producer did, but then he's so nice I figured he'd just make sure his friend got an appropriate role, because obviously Kevin was better suited for the role the friend had. Now we know how Kate and Kevin ended up living together.

There was recently an article in The Charlotte Observer about reported incidents of child abuse being down due to COVID-19, though it is believed that the actual number is really higher than normal. One couple mentioned in the article were foster parents. Their name? Pearson.

I love this episode. Toby is very romantic and willing to do whatever it takes to make Kate feel loved. After Deja’s mother declined to see her during a mandatory visit, Randall returned to the prison and told her what he thought about her treatment of Deja. They had a heated exchange, but we learned later that Randall gave her his home telephone number so she could call Deja collect. During flashbacks, Jack and Rebecca met with a social worker for a year and then it was time for a judge to approve the adoption. The black judge did not think a white family could prepare Randall for what it is like to be a black man in America. Kevin’s arc was taking a positive turn, but now it is on a downward spiral. During flashbacks, we saw Young William standing before a judge because he had gotten in trouble, apparently for taking drugs. Later, the judge met with him privately and told him a story that represents the title of the episode, The Most Disappointed Man. Near the end of the episode, we saw that Randall’s knock on William’s door saved his father from doing something that would have destroyed the time he had left. Amazingly, both judges knew each other and shared a scene. They always manage to show a connection between new material and what we've seen before. Those family photos were great except not all of the kids could look good at once. Photoshop had not been invented but Rebecca did the next best thing. Rebecca looked so good in all the photos. Delroy Lindo just looks like someone you had BETTER take seriously. I was really disappointed with what happened to Kevin. It seemed to be working. And the jeweler thought he looked familiar. The scenes with Kate and Toby were nice and the t-shirts they wore were cute. I have to wonder why Toby was able to buy all the t-shirts with one or two words. Regarding Kate's t-shirt, there is an actress currently appearing on "Mom" (I don't watch that show) who has won awards or been nominated for them. For one of her roles, for which she did win at least one award, she was a particularly nasty woman who, when she was pregnant, wore a t-shirt with an arrow pointing down saying, "I'm with stupid". I'm relieved the Deja's mother actually does care and doesn't want Deja to see her the way she looked, but Randall does have reason to be concerned. Someone like her cannot be counted on to raise Deja. William had a great scene in court.
