Why did they have to make Cassie evil?

I, too, noticed the change in Cassie's personality. In conversations with others, we all thought Faye was a more interesting and exciting character than Cassie. I guess we don't see witches as sweet little girls and that is what Cassie was. Now, with the dark magic in her, she has greater potential than any of the others. Cassie is demonstrating less uncertainty and more individual strength. Cassie has become more snarky than evil. Snarkiness makes her much more interesting.
The power she uses may be dark magic, but she thus far has the strength to use it to protect the people in her life. I am glad Blackwell has made an appearance because I kept speculating about who he would turn out to be. The biggest surprise to me is that he appears as the same person he was 16 years ago. I thought he would be an alter ego, perhaps inhabiting Ethan's body. Guess they did not want to go out on a limb like that.
What do you think?

I actually find all the witches quite interesting. Faye and Diana are still my favorite characters, and I'm liking Dark Evil Cassie.
