Superb 22 minute featurette on GOT: You Win or You Die I have started reading the book(s) and the first 7 minutes of the featurette bring me to where I am in the first book. I can tell this is an excellent story and I am surprised the first book was written 20 years ago. I read fantasy but no one had brought this one to my attention. I have cable channels, but I do not subscribe to additional channels like HBO that I have to pay for. It's not that I am cheap; I just do not have time to watch all the shows I like on the channels I already have. I have decided to take a hiatus from procedural cop shows to free up time and space to watch a greater variety of shows like Game of Thrones. This type of show gets my brain juices flowing. I am wondering, though, how far into the story in the book should I go before I start watching the series? Suggestions

I am wondering, though, how far into the story in the book should I go before I start watching the series? Suggestions All I can tell you, my friend, is how it worked for me. I am NOT a fantasy reader normally. I tried for years to get into the Lord of the Rings books, and could never stay with it. Even tried after seeing the first movie and couldn't do it. BUT, with Game of Thrones, I heard about it first, from the TV critics, who had the inside scoop, and knew how awesome it was gonna be. Many of them were familiar with the books already. I thought I'd get a head start on things and try to read the first book before the show got underway. Once I got it from the library I found that there were so many characters I had trouble keeping them all straight in my head. Reluctantly I returned the book and made plans to watch the first episode, hoping that it would give me an idea of who people were when I went back to the books. And it worked. As soon as I'd seen the first episode I tried the books again, and it was wonderful. I couldn't put them down--they were THAT good. I couldn't stop, nor did I want to. I read them all, one after another. About a month ago I finished the final book, and I was filled with the incredible and poignant sadness of knowing I was going to have to wait perhaps another 4 years for the next one. God, please keep George R. R. Martin alive for a long time! Give him some of my years, if you have to, to keep him writing those books. I don't know that I answered your question exactly, AntiArbitrator, but that's how my experience with the books and the series worked.

Thank you Mistermoonlight, you certainly did answer my question. I was concerned about remembering who all the characters are and seeing them interact in the first episode will help me to visualize them. In fact, watching your featurette helped me to put a face to the names.
I purchased the Lord of the rings trilogy as a gift for someone who had difficulty reading the books. I wound up reading the books myself and enjoyed it. So since you enjoyed reading Game of Thrones more than Lord of the Rings, I am doubly excited about this series.
There appears to be a family tree with the boxed set, but it would be very difficult to read on my 2 1/2 inch screen. lol
You are, as always, very helpful. Thank you.
