Groovin' on the harmonies. It's as if if the Everly Brothers had been quintuplets:

I have had this song stuck in my head all day long. How cool to come back home and find this alternate take version of it on YouTube:

Their slow songs play on my favorite pop radio station.
Before there were 'N Sync and the Backstreet Boys, there were The Lettermen, The Four Lads, the Brothers Four, The Vogues ... So much great harmony.

Brian Wilson said two of his big influences were The Four Freshmen and Chuck Berry (think car songs.)
Here are the Four Freshmen doing Wilson's 'Surfer Girl.'
And adding Chuck Berry:
You come up with this equation: The Four Freshmen + Chuck Berry = The Beach Boys
And as a bonus, here's a rare track of the Beach Boys doing the same song with Status Quo:

I like The Four Freshmen too. I think. I can't remember what they did right now.

Groovin' on the harmonies. It's as if if the Everly Brothers had been quintuplets: I heard The Everly Brothers on the radio this morning. The DJ said something about someone saying they sounded like they should be called Everly.

Oh wow, what a great memory. I'd forgotten that the Beach Boys were on this song. I saw it in the theater as a kid when it first came out. And what a perfect addition here, with our TE monkey clause. Here's the version as it appeared in the movie, with Annette Funicello and the Beach Boys:

Fascinating background on the evolution of the song "Sloop John B."

It's weird that a radio station I used to listen to played "Good Vibrations" and yet it didn't seem loud. I did ask a national DJ if they played "Fun, Fun, Fun" shortly before they started adding the louder stuff and was told no. The local station was sneaking songs into commercial breaks.
In theory, the station was supposed to be easy listening, though a lot of what they played was louder than what I wanted to hear. The music supplier went under not long after that. My current station gets most of its music from a source that learned not to ignore the great standards, even as it adds more and more weird stuff.
I think I'm correct that my station plays "Kokomo", "In My Room", "God Only Knows", "Little Surfer Girl".

"Little Surfer Girl" was always one of those songs I could put on when I was spinning in a club and count on it to get all of the couples onto the dance floor every time.
Here's another one of my favorites:

My favorite pop radio station played Brian Wilson's "I Got Rhythm" yesterday.
I don't like that because the great standards shouldn't be redone as rock and roll.
Yes, I get that new versions of old songs are one way to get young people to hear these great songs and rejuvenate this type of music, but still ...

My radio station just played "Sloop John B".
The clock radio turns itself off after 20 minutes but I had it on for Mike Huckabee.

My radio station is playing "God Only Knows". Or was. Paul McCartney has called "God Only Knows" the best song ever written, and confessed that every time he hears it, it makes him cry. Bono said in 2006 "the string arrangement on 'God Only Knows' is fact and proof of angels." For an idea of what Brian Wilson means to the history of music, check out this magical evening on video. Lyle Lovett's haunting soulfull version of "God Only Knows" (07:03) especially makes me think about this place, all of the friends we've managed to salvage, and what they mean to me. Warning, this bit of video will not only inspire you, it may make you weep: I just found out today that Brian said in an autobiography that it was a John Sebastian song that inspired "God Only Knows" which shows how musical influences work. Sebastian is one of my favorite artists, too. And it was Brian's "Pet Sounds" album that inspired the Beatles to do "Sgt. Pepper." Brian never said which Sebastian song it was, but I have a feeling it was this one:

Actually George Will didn't say that, Brian Wilson did. Will only reported it. And if 'Help Me Rhonda' is a work of fiction, created about no one in particular, give me a dozen Brian Wilson songs any day.
Surf's up!

I heard "God Only Knows" this morning, and "Help Me Rhonda" was the Name That Tune song one day this week. The local morning show is more ... lively. It shouldn't be as people are just getting up and maybe don't want it so loud.
