As you probably remember from having memorized the "Guidelines, Rules, and Other Necessary Evils" thread, as requested in section 3, subsection 42A, hot-linking of graphics is not allowed on our site by both us and ProBoards. That's even if a site itself allows it. All images posted here have to be hosted on a personal site like Photobucket or Tumblr. These are easy and they are free. Stealing bandwidth from another site, however, isn't cool and is against our TOS. Also, we would ask that you not post graphics as attachments, as we have a limited amount of space for those, and are planning to use that space for improvements to the site in the near future. Please, in the next 36 hours, move all graphics you wish to save in your posts to a graphics sharing site like Photobucket (there are others as well) and link them here since we will be removing all hot-linked graphics and attachments at that time. Feel free to PM any of the mods or admins if you need help or advice, keeping in mind that some of us are secretly monkeys in disguise. Slipping us treats to allow you to continue hot-linking has had only limited success so far.

Understood. If anyone needs help setting up an account or needs something moved to photobucket, let me know.

I don't really understand the concept of hot-linking.
Also, does your announcement mean that we can't use pictures from our own computer files in attachments?

Hot-linking is when you use a website's graphic and post it elsewhere via a link back to that original website.
And right, that's what we were talking about with attachments. You can still use graphics stored on your computer, you just have to post them to a site like Photobucket first, then use the url to it in your post, using the 'insert image' button at the top of your composing screen. Do that, rather than uploading it as an attachment here on the site. We have a finite amount of space alloted to us for attachments.

Hot-linking is when you use a website's graphic and post it elsewhere via a link back to that original website. It might be b/c i'm tired but say that again? Ok, here's a description of what hot-linking is: you go to a website where you see a cool picture, graphic, or smiley that you want to use. If you know something about the internet, you know that you can often right click on that graphic and get the URL of it and where it's hosted at the website you're viewing it on. If you use THAT url, you are linking directly to their website to display it here, and that's what hot linking is. The correct way to do it is to right click on the image, save it to your own computer (assuming here that you've made sure that it is not a copyrighted image), then upload the image from your computer to a site like Photobucket to store it for you. Then, when you want to use it here, you will enter the URL of the image at your Photobucket account, and not the one where you originally found it. Does that make any better sense?

The correct way to do it is to right click on the image, save it to your own computer (assuming here that you've made sure that it is not a copyrighted image) Hmmm, I would imagine that if the image is copyrighted, then you would not be able to save it to your computer? You would maybe get an "This image is copyrighted and cannot be saved" type of error message?

The two ways to to tell as of now are if an image has a watermark or if there is a url located in the image.

We might need research on this one Moon. It depends on what he was trying to save.

If you look at the original version of the avatar you can see that it's made to be wider than it is tall, like a widescreen movie.
Go into Profile, choose modify my profile and scroll down a little and you'll see dimensions right under the avatar itself. 100x100 is the maximum you can use for avatars, so you'll have to back the height off a little. Maybe try 100x80 at first, and see if that's enough. You'll have to experiment around a little to find what you like.
Also, be sure to replace your hot-linked avatar with a copy hosted on your own storage page.

Thanks I got another question. If I put up an image from my twitter account that I downloaded from my computer is that a hot link? I thought I might find an answer fairly easy, but that hasn't happened. I have a suspicion it probably is considered hotlinking, nonetheless I've posted the question in ProBoards support and hopefully will have an answer for you in the next day or so.

Update: here's the reply from ProBoards support: support.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=support&thread=419371&page=1#4857376I did a search for info about it again and came up with nil. You'll have to do as they suggest and contact them to find out for sure. And the second point they made about the arbitrary changes in graphics URLs by Twitter or FaceBook is a good one. The only way to control your graphics is to host them on a site like Photobucket yourself.

Before I got around to asking ProBoards, Anti confirmed there's nothing wrong with a simple link. displacedcwloungefan.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=charmd&thread=1267&page=6#89219I didn't see that as a problem if I didn't use the "img", which I knew was wrong. But maybe it's time I got a Photobucket account or something related (which I might have done but haven't checked yet). After all, the first time David Hayes posted something for me I'm not even sure Photobucket existed.

Thanks, Anti, for your message.
I checked to see if you had a discussion on the Support Forum. When I couldn't find one I started one and there seems to be no clear answer.
It is technically possible, if I ask someone to put a photo on their site, for hotlinking to still be taking place if there is spam advertising. But David Hayes hosts the site I sent my photos to, so I don't think that's a concern.
I wanted to put another photo on there but there was no one at the college library to help me. And I won't have time tomorrow or Sunday.
