If I had ever watched this show, he would have been the reason, since I knew him from "Northern Exposure"--though I didn't care for him there.
On "Modern Family" he appeared for the first time as Cam's father. Jay, Mitchell's father, was frustrated that Cam's father treated Mitchell as the "wife" since Cam stays home with their adopted daughter and Mitchell has the job. But Cam's father is just trying to cope too. They both have a problem with having a gay son.
