So... what do you think about what Obama said?
Should our country allow same-sex marriage?
Do you agree with him?

I believe it is the right thing to do. I don't suffer with religious ideologies.

I disagree but I do know that it's a bit too late to do much to stop it, there are very few states that don't support it!

I think it should be determined by the state. While i don't agree w/that lifestyle i'm not going criticize those that do. It is a free country after all. Some states are more tolerable than others therefor it should be more determined by local/government then a country-wide bill.

I support civil rights for everyone.
Marriage has changed over the course of history from having ones parents arraign marriages for their children to marrying for love.
Marriage between only one man and one woman is still very new in history as many different cultures and religious still have many wives and some women are allowed to have more then one husband.
The excuses given in not supporting gay marriage are the same ones given when marriage between the races were not allowed and it took an act of the Supreme Court to remove the laws banning mixed marriage Virginia Vs. Loving.
Civil rights and gay rights can not be determined by the states or by the popular vote it has to be determined by law.

I go by what I believe the Lord says about it, but I am not about to get too far into the conversation over it again because I know what doing so can lead to and right now I am not willing to go there just yet. Maybe later at some point, but not right now. I am sure that everyone here has seen what would come from me at least one time in their life anyways. What some people do seem to forget though is that everyone is free when they are in this country and not just a select few. God bless you always!!! Holly

I think it was the absolute right thing to do, but I hate that he's obviously just doing it to bring in more voters. I wish Obama would've grew a backbone earlier, and actually lived up to all his promises instead of giving into Republicans time and time again.
IMO everyone has a right to get married. And what a lot of highly religious people fail to realize is that most gay individuals want to have the right to get married for the benefit it offers to them and their spouses, where if they were not married they would not have the same rights as married couples, or relatives.
You don't have to agree with it, but they're not harming anyone by getting married. No one is threatening your marriage

Put me on the Pro side of this. I've got gay friends who are much more loving and devoted to one another than many heterosexual couples I know. Anything that promotes more love in the world is a good thing to me.
Some things are important enough that they should be national in scope. Just look at how many states fought against voting rights for women and African Americans.

Fascinating replies, my friends..... and each one of them was intelligently phrased. I hope this thread keeps going.... We are a nation that is open for debate. It is OK if you do not agree...... it is OK if you agree.... .... what is MOST important is that you have an OPINION of your OWN.

The only reason he got elected was because some people thought it was time for a black President. Seriously, I regret that Colin Powell wasn't running! He would have been awesome!! As for the issue at hand...I don't agree that gay marriage should be allowed. Nope. Not now. Not ever. I'm not overly religious, not at all. But I feel that marriage should only be between a man and a woman.

Civil unions however is the phrase that i prefer to use. But yes, why should they be punished for loving (or being) who they are? They really shouldn't. In fact, they get critisized for it enough as it is.

There are so many folks out there wanting to shape your opinion for their own reasons. I've always said there are at least 7 sides to each issue. Investigate them all, then make your mind up. Don't limit yourself to just one source.

I am a supporter. I believe everyone should have the equal opportunity to be miserable as some marriages turn out to be. And yes I have had two marriages that were totally miserable.

Holly Honestly, I've been trying to find the right words to express how I feel about the subject, but Holly has said it so perfectly, this is where I stand as well. I honestly do not judge... my oldest friend... one whom I knew since I was 10 (then we lost touch as this was the pre-facebook days then to be back in contact ten years later) is gay and she is already married and honestly, I am jealous of their love. Their love (from what I've seen) is far better than any I've seen from friends who are straight, even better than my own parents!

^^^ I don't judge either, but I have seen others in the past say online that I do when all that I am really doing is letting the Lord's word be known because that is what the Lord wants us to do and that is share his word with those who don't know about it. Its a person's choice whether they want to live by his word, like he wants us all to do, or not. God bless you always!!! Holly

The Fox affiliate is the only station in my area that I can count on to give me the low and the high (because the attitude is that people know this and want to know the forecast, other stations will do that only if there was something remarkable about either one or if there's just not anything else to talk about), so if I am not watching the TV with cable and the VCR at the time, I record the part of the 10:00 newscast that has the weather in it.
One night I saw this pretty church as I rewound, so I decided to see what was going on. It was a church I had driven past a number of time. It has a sign out front welcoming LGBT. Now the United Church of Christ is known for this, and a couple of United Church of Christ churches in my area have supposedly split over this issue. The report was about their efforts to reach these people and give them a welcoming atmosphere.
I can't say I'm comfortable with any of this, but for those who say loving and accepting are more important than obeying some rules which also say you can't wear the clothes I wear or eat shellfish, then it must be all right.
As for what Paul said that makes this a bigger deal than dietary rules and such, I was reading that the Greek words were mis-translated.
