read F451 in seventh grade..... the last day of school, my friends and I burned our papers from the class.... igniting all that paper was a lot harder than we thought. so we just dumped lighter fluid on them and 'Burn, baby, burn!!!' the Devil made me do it!!!

Thanks for sharing this, Chloe. He was a hero of mine as well. I first became interested in science fiction when I was about ten years old. He was high on my reading list: The Illustrated Man, The Martian Chronicles, Farenheit 451, I Sing The Body Electric. I devoured them all. Much later on, when I studied writing I realized that Bradbury was one of the few novelists who was also an excellent poet. These are very different areas of writing. Incorporating a poet's ability with words into a short story or novel, Bradbury was able to make his work sing with a resonance not often seen in literature. My favorite of all his works is a short story titled "The Kiliminjaro Device" in which a man travels back in time to January, 1954 to meet an old man contemplating suicide in Ketchum, Idaho. It doesn't take long to realize that the man is Ernest Hemingway, who is helped to make a choice much more noble than the one he is contemplating. It's very short, and you can read it online here: books.google.co.uk/books?id=00gEAAAAMBAJ&lpg=RA1-PA3&dq=%22ray%20bradbury%22&pg=RA1-PA68#v=onepage&q=%22ray%20bradbury%22&f=falseFrom 1985-92 each week I looked forward to his anthology series on TV, Ray Bradbury Theater, which always opened like this: Finally, here is one of my favorite Bradbury quotes, a bit of advice to writers: "Go to the edge of the cliff and jump off. Build your wings on the way down" - Ray Bradbury
