Joss Whedon himself has said that the cast considered the ship to be the 10th character on the show. It's very important to both Mal, Wash, and Kaylee, as you saw tonight when they executed the 'Crazy Ivan,' after which Kaylee patted the ship's wall and said 'that's my girl, that's my good girl.'
