Moon and I decided to do a syncrowatch of episode 1 on Hulu. Let me know when you're caught up to the intro. Should I go ahead and give my thoughts up to the intro (assuming you've already seen this show anyways)? If anyone else wants to join as well, they are welcome to!

Sure, by all means, please do. I'm about 4 minutes into it.
The important part about this opening sequence in the pilot is that it sets up who Capt. Malcolm Reynolds and Zoe are, and basically the whole essence of the show. After you see that part and listen to the words to the theme song, you've got a good idea of the premise.

Ok, I'm just past the wonderful theme song, written by Joss Whedon himself.
If you're wondering why you hear/see a lot of Chinese language in this show it's because in the future the US and China have pretty much fused culturally, and folks use Chinese and English terms interchangebly fairly often.
Also, 'shiny' is the future word for 'cool.'

Okay, so the very beginning... is it like a futuristic war? I can already see who Malcolm and Zoe are... It seems that they're doing whatever they can to stay free, am I right? I am very intrigued so far!
How could I forget to mention the theme song? It is wonderful! And now that you're caught up and hopefully haven't bypassed me, I'll continue on.

Think of either a bad version of the United Federation of Planets from Star Trek or the Empire from Star Wars, and that's pretty much who The Alliance is--the folks you saw them fighting against at the beginning.

I've never seen Star Wars... so, the bad version of the United Federation of Planets from Star Trek? Okay, I get the picture now.

You see the brown coat that the captain wears? That's the reason for the name Browncoats.

I figured that part out already... but that's interesting. So, what's the deal with the job gone sour? Is it because the Alliance found them? And it should be interesting to see what passengers they pick up. And who are the Reavers?

Nah, they got the goods. The guy they were gonna sell them to backed out of the deal once they got on Persephone, and as you probably saw the captain thinks he sold them out to the Alliance.
You've probably caught on that a shepherd is a preacher of sorts, and a companion is a prostitute. Only in the future the latter is a highly regarded profession, which requires years of study to enter.

Yes, I did catch on to that, I just got to the part right after they took off... although, since they took the time to introduce Simon to the captain makes me wonder if there's something that's gonna go on between the two. Or if something's gonna go on with Simon.

I think I'm a bit behind you because I just found out what you meant by companion... I did not know she was the person Mal called Ambassador...

You're just about to find out.
And reavers ae bad news. They eat people. Better to let your knowledge of them develop through the episodes, though.
Hopefully, by now you can begin to see a little bit, through the writing, of why we love these characters and this show.

Ah... she's Simon's sister, River. I just heard the whole story. And the Reavers... okay, I'll find out when the time comes.

I'm already loving the characters, but what's the connection between Captain Reynolds and Kaylee?

She's the ship's engineer, kinda like Scotty on Star Trek. In upcoming episode you'll see how they first met.
Whoever the idiot at Fox was who decided this episode didn't have the strength to launch the series was an idiot, and obviously didn't understand the first thing about humor. This show has some of the wittiest dialogue to ever appear on TV.
Kaylee is a real sweetheart, and one of my favorite characters. But heck, I can say that about just about all of them.

Oh, I see, and yeah, there are pretty funny moments. I'm at the part where they just arrived at Whitefall to meet with Patience, where are you at?

I'm only a couple minutes behind you.
Just say River being taken and just saw the gunfight. Why does the Alliance want River so badly? And I think I'm just about to see the Reavers... yikes!

Um... wow. Just got finished with the episode and... well, the part with the Reavers definately had me on the edge of my seat! And how they got out of it, it almost definately reminded me of Scotty and Kirk on Star Trek, so I can see what you mean there!
That was amazing! I am officially hooked!

Well, as you can tell now, you don't get to actually see the Reavers in the episode, just their ship.
It's a lot more fun to let Whedon tell the story of why the Alliance wants River over the arc of the episodes and the movie. I wouldn't want to spoil that for you.

I had friends that told me about this show for years, but I didn't discover it for myself until a year or two ago. The next episode is The Train Job. That's the one they ended up using as the first episode aired.

Okay, then I'll wait on that. I gotta say, this is the first show I've ever known of that aired the episodes out of sequence. I'm glad I'm getting the chance to see it in order first.
That was fun. Thanks for watching with me!

It was fun to see it again, and through the eyes of someone seeing it for the first time. I enjoyed it too.
That ending you were talking about? I forgot to mention that the ship is very much a character in the story too.
Every person involved with this show has said it was the best experience they've ever had, and that they would be back in a second if they were ever given the chance.

I don't doubt that. And it's always more fun to watch a show with someone than alone... And now I get why all the Castle fans were saying "It's the return of the Browncoats" when someone form Firefly was guest starring... I believe I remember the episode, not sure though.
The ship is very much a character too, how so?
So, want to watch episode two tomorrow? Same time, same place?

That sounds great. And anyone else that wants to join us is welcome, too. Joss Whedon himself has said that the cast considered the ship to be the 10th character on the show. It's very important to both Mal, Wash, and Kaylee, as you saw tonight when they executed the 'Crazy Ivan,' after which Kaylee patted the ship's wall and said 'that's my girl, that's my good girl.' Great video about that here: science.discovery.com/videos/firefly-the-10th-character.html
