Most people know him from his TV work from the Andy Griffith Show to Matlock and he made you believe that he loved Ritz Cracker with his voice telling us that Ritz is a Hummm Great Cracker.
I shall forever remember his iconic work in the movie A Face in the Crowd whose message of beware of the media and people like "Lonesome" Rhodes he was so funny in No Time for Sergeants.

One of his best movies was No Time for Sergeants, when he went to read the eye chart, funny words like EUP, GNIXEL, BUGLUMP, absolutely hilarious. And another one where he described a game of football. (they was running up and down this cow pasture carring a punkin)

A great actor and a class act as a human being! Thanks, Mr. Griffith! It was an honor having you entertain us!

I remember a movie where he played a really evil man ... just to get away from his mister nice guy image. I really liked a short lived series he starred in as the owner of a junkyard that makes his own reusable spacecraft so he can go to the moon and salvage stuff the US left there. He embarrassed the US and Soviet governments by how inexpensively and how quickly he could get the job done as a private individual businessman.

I grew up watching reruns of "The Andy Griffin" show and I watched a ton of Madlock. those were some wonderful childhood memories and he will be missed terribly. I know I have a few old photos of my dad and in one of them he reminds me of a young Andy Griffith

I forgot about that movie... he was a lawyer who murdered some guy. It's like Elizabeth Montgomery from "Bewitched" playing the "black-widow" Blanche Taylor Moore.

The amazing thing about "The Andy Griffith Show" was that Andy had been this energetic stand up comic and his character in the show was the ultimate in calm. Instead of making sure he was the center of all attention, he made each and every one of his huge cast of characters absolutely shine. And the show didn't belittle the townsfolk. It did show they were human and had their own uniqueness, but also gave them their due respect.
In one famous episode, Opie shoots a bird and kills it and Andy helps him deal with something that neither one of them can fix. I remember being scared as a child watching one show where a man that Andy had sent to the penitentiary had gotten out and was known to be heading back to Mayberry to settle something with Sheriff Taylor. People in the town wanted Andy to leave town for safety, but he wouldn't. I also remember how the man who ran the fix-it shop got word that a man from NASA was coming to purchase a patent he had been granted many years before. The show was a spin-off of "The Danny Thomas Show" and in turn spun off "Gomer Pyle: USMC" and "Mayberry: RFD." Andy had the choice to bring back Mayberry as a series one more time or do a new show. He chose to do "Matlock."

As a preacher's kid, no movie ever struck closer to home for me than Andy's work in "An Angel in My Pocket" which had Jerry Van Dyke as Andy's brother-in-law. Andy was a minister with an extended family that got assigned his first church in a town divided and depleted by an ongoing feud between the two most prominent families of the town. One of the many great scenes in the movie was when the minister arranges to have an organ donated to the church to replace the really awful one they had. The organ was in a theater and dated from the time when silent pictures were accompanied by an organist playing music to set the tone of the movie. The theater had become a place where vaudeville acts were performed and he was seen going into the theater by members of his church. He asked to try to organ and was told to feel free to do so. As he played and was totally lost in enjoying the sound of the organ and the sweetness of his accomplishment, a stripper heard the music and used it as an opportunity to practice her striptease act. The parishioners looked in and saw there new minister playing the organ while the woman disrobed. Then the minister looked up, realized what was happening and hit a sour note. In the immortal words of Ricky Ricardo, he had some splaining to do!

I shall forever remember his iconic work in the movie A Face in the Crowd whose message of beware of the media and people like "Lonesome" Rhodes he was so funny in No Time for Sergeants. I am so sorry to hear this. Most folks don't know about his career before Mayberry, but his film debut in 1957's A Face in the Crowd was just electrifying. And iconic, is exactly the right word, 3Sheets. Directed by Elia Kazan ( A Streetcar Named Desire, On the Waterfront) and written by Bud Schulberg, who also wrote On the Waterfront, Andy Griffith shows an amazing range and more than holds his own in this amazing four star film. Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 91% rating: www.rottentomatoes.com/m/face_in_the_crowd/ I can't see any way that this film wasn't a huge influence on Paddy Chayefski's Network. This movie, over 50 years ago, gave us a view that's uncannily similar to today's media-savvy megalomaniacs (think Rush Limbaugh and Glen Beck here) who ride a fame-fueled wave across the network television landscape. According to Kazan, Schulberg's theme in the script was was the power that television could hold and how that power could be perverted. Interestingly enough, Kazan says that the character is based on a combination of Arthur Godfrey, Billy Graham, and Huey P. Long, which if you've seen the movie makes a lot of sense. And I gotta say there's a little bit of Elvis in the character, too.

We used to watch the show when I was little.
The funny thing is....the opening credits, where Andy and Opy are walking by a lake with their fishing poles...was actually filmed here in southern California. I believe it was at Lake Hollywood. Pretty spot.

I watched reruns of "The Andy Griffith Show" as a teenager. For some reason I didn't know about the show when I was a young child, but I had watched "Gomer Pyle" because my father liked it, and the series "Headmaster". I didn't know the color episodes weren't as good, but once Don Knotts left people say the show went downhill. But one station around here has aired the show nearly every weeknight at 5:30 for as long as anyone can remember, while everyone else puts news in that slot. And those inferior color episodes used to air on Sunday nights after the news.
I also watched "Matlock" and enjoyed it a lot.

I remember the episode that David was mentioning about where Opie accidentally shot the bird, all the episodes I watched were in black and white but I do remember watching lots of "Matlock" it was a classic show that I watched with my mom, I remember the few episodes where Don Knotts came to visit his old friend on the series.

RIP First it was that woman from I Love Lucy who played Caroline Appleby and now Andy. Sad. But they lived good long lives. And now Ernest Borgnine. Is that our three? I didn't like "McHale's Navy" at first because the station that ran it put it on in place of "Gilligan's Island". But I seem to remember liking it.
