This was the last Firefly episode ever filmed (although we've still got two to go) and there are elements in it that make it very poignant and perfect as a 'goodbye'. It's one of my favorites, and you'll never forget it.
Ready to go in one minute!

Simon always finds a way to stick his foot in his mouth with Kaylee.

Mandarin translation:
"Well, I'm glad I rated higher than dead Bessie here. Ni gaosu na niu ta you shuang meimu? [Why don't you tell the cow about its beautiful eyes?]" - Kaylee to Simon.

So far: Simon, Simon, Simon... he really does not know how to talk to girls, does he? Gotta give him props for trying though... He's doing more than the jerks I've been with... although he's gonna have to do a lot better to get the girl.

What's the significance of Jayne's cap? I wondered why Misha Collins used a cap like that for his Twitter photo for awhile so I knew it must mean something. I guess Mal did not learn Zoe's first rule of battle.

The significance is just that it's so horrible, but he loves it--it was sent to him by his mother. And thus, Firefly fans 'love' it too. One of the original hats from that episode was auctioned off for charity and sold for $5000.

Wow! Firefly fans actually are crazy. $5000.
Tracey is "rather spry for a dead fella."

Preacher is making steady eye contact with Mal while he suggests letting the Feds board the ship. He must have a plan. Tracey looks like he is going to grab a gun.

Poor Kaylee. She's sweet on Simon, he uses her as a bargaining chip and threatens not to treat her when she gets shot. She meets Tracy and . . . .
She's having a hell of a run of luck with men.

Once again Shepard seems to know an awful lot about the Alliance and tactics--more than a preacher would.

The ending scene with the beautiful haunting music, the snow falling, and the funeral served as a perfect coda to the show.
Composer Greg Edmonson stated that he felt the music he wrote for Tracey's funeral may be 'too pretty', as he wrote it not about Tracey's death, but as his personal farewell to the series. (The cast and crew were aware that Firefly had been canceled at this point in the show's run.) I'd say he did a pretty good job.
Fox, in all of its wisdom, did not air the episode.
"The Message" was nominated for a 2004 Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form.

This episode was rather serious, but it once again showed the loyalty the crew has for each other and people from their past. FavoritesZoe's first rule of battle, don't let them know where you are. Then Mal comes through with guns blazing and says they don't like it when you shoot at them. Simon's failed attempt at joking with Kaylee and she sashays off. Then River tells Simon he's a goof or poop. Jayne: What'd yall order a dead guy for? River lying on top of the container. Wash's reaction: Your dead army buddy is on the deck. That was a very exciting chase scene. Preacher stepping up and taking charge with the rogue Feds. When you can't run, you crawl. When you can't crawl, you find someone to carry you.

Joss Whedon is one of the folks in the funeral scene, by the way.

Do you know if they intended to show it as the last episode?

The last episode in the original run was the pilot episode, which aired December 20th, 2002. Fans didn't see "The Messege" until July 15, 2003, after the series ended, so about 7 months later. UPDATE: The above is what Wikipedia stated. I just now saw this post that says "Yep, it was cancelled with 3 episodes unaired, and those weren't aired at all in the USA before 2005. Unsure what country aired episodess 11-13 first, but it was probably Canada." So I guess the answer isn't really settled. The Wiki article gives an air date, but doesn't specify where.

I think the loyalty of the fans is fantastic when we consider the way the airing of the episodes was not as smooth as it could have been. A great series that was ended much too soon.

Do you know if they intended to show it as the last episode? I don't think so, because of some incidents that occur in the next two episodes, "Heart of Gold" and "Objects in Space." I think those were intended to be the final two episodes of the season.

I agree too. The only thing I've seen like it was the fans of Star Trek who had to wait 10 years after the original 2-season series for a movie. But I think Firefly fans may be even more loyal and vocal than they were.
Oh, and another bit about "The Message." I don't think any of the cast had to do any acting in that final burial scene. I think the grief on their faces was very real, knowing that the best experience they'd ever had was coming to an end.
