I am probably the worst damn person in the world to be making a thread on this topic, for I'm a back-slidden Baptist who's not much of a believer any more.
But I just love some of the gospel music out there, like these songs:
I love almost anything Elvis did in the gospel genre.
The next two were written by Leonard Cohen. If I could pick one person's music to have with me on a desert island it would have to be him:
Stay with this one till the end. It's worth it.
Poet, lady's man, Buddhist monk, and songwriter, Leonard Cohen is my favorite songwriter of all time.

I heard this song once before, I don't remember where, but I like it:
While this next one is not a gospel song... and Smallville fans will recognize this song... there were some Churches who use this song for a skit. A friend's friend even did one for his Sunday school class.
A friend showed it to me and this is the video that made me believe again, because in the back of my mind, I always knew Jesus was there, but I wasn't much of a believer. But since watching the video, I sought out Jesus myself and went to a Baptist Church where I ended up making friends and I'm a believer again. Yeah, I've done quite a bit of soul searching this past year.

It wasn't too long ago that I prayed for His help and guidance, I asked him to speak to me in a way I knew it was him. That same day, I stumbled onto this song... In the words of one of my Uncles: God works in mysterious ways.

I find it confusing when people use the term "gospel". There are some who automatically think it means music by black people. Where I live, the term automatically eans white people and often quartets singing in harmony. But the correct term for that is "Southern gospel".
And then there are the people who use the term for any kind of Christian music. Including the garbage that goes by the name "Contemporary Christian". To me it's just noise. For people to say it has positive lyrics means nothing. I won't hear anything but noise. It has to be the kind of music I can stand for me to hear any message.
And then there is "Praise and Worship". Ever since the one time I went to church with one of my aunts, I have despised the term, because I think this term was used that day in the church bulletin. I was in my uncle's Sunday School class hearing all this noise. I went in the sanctuary for the 11:00 service and the guitars, drums and such were still there. I took off and didn't come back until it was all over, because I had had quite enough of that noise from down the hall. No way would I be in the same room with it. After that day, though, when I went back to this same church, they seem to have done away with that.
In any case, "Praise and Worship" seems to have a different meaning based on another site I go to. I hate "touchy-feely".
I like hymns that are at least a hundred years old and played on organ or piano. Some Southern gospel I like too. Black church music sometimes appeals to me, but not what is called "black gospel".

Unsure if this is Gospel....but I remember it well.... You bet your pea-pickin' heart it is, buddy. I watched the Tennessee Ernie Ford tv show all the time when I was a kid. Gospel was Elvis's favorite music, by the way.

And so do I, Holly, so let's hear it right now.
And how many folks remember this great song from Manhatten Transfer that made it up to #22 on the American pop charts in 1975?
What a wonderful, joyous song.

I watched reruns of Tennessee Ernie Ford's show on PBS a few years back.
