Yes, and I respected that, I am going to revise my statement since you helped you realize that indeed her parents didn't have even a common-law marriage so thank you! I am going to change it and show that intermarriage has taken place in my own family-especially since it was Native Americans marrying typical white Americans and how it is amazing how they didn't get in trouble with the law.

Even though there was no marriage, I think it is important to note that Constantine's father did acknowledge her and visited her regularly. That is different from the impression I had that white men would have relations with colored women and not acknowledge either the woman or the children.
The mention of hair ribbons from Paris leads me to think Constantine's father might have been a foreign travelling man. I believe people in Europe were more liberal when it came to mixing the races.

Good point Anti! I am writing a Civil War story and I had the masters involved with the slaves and some of them acknowledged their children and some do not!
I think that you are right, many people from Europe have very liberal ideas about things.
I think this is why so many African young men show an interest in me and want to become my significant other because they see I am kind and not like the other American females and that I don't judge people based on their skin color.
My mother always told me this and it is so true "I don't want ever hear you say you don't like someone because of their skin color because that is mean and petty, if you don't like someone it better for something they have done not because of race"

And now let me also chastize the author. The moment Skeeter utters the phrase 'I want to be a writer' in chapter 5 I said loudly 'Oh no...' Because then we know. The character is Stockett herself, and she is inserting herself into the book as the hero. I thought to myself 'how dare she?' It's a mistake that many first-time writers make, and unfortunately she's not good enough to pull it off by simply changing the era to the early 60s. *** She will be the fulcrum between the black and white characters in the book. I have been thinking about this. Stockett is being sued by her brother's maid on the allegation that Aibileen is based on the maid. The name of her brother's maid is Ablene Cooper (similar to Aibileen Clark) and she has a gold tooth also. In addition, Ablene lost her son several months before the birth of the Stocketts' first child. It seems like she put herself and her brother's family in the book. The surprising thing is her brother is supporting the maid's case against his sister.

Hi Anti and AVP. Anti, I still haven't answered your question yet because I'm still formulating an answer, but the suit was to be a part of it. The suit by Abilene was dismissed, for whatever reason, but I still think it plays a part in my answer..
And there was no hint of a marriage in what I've read of Constantine's story. It was just that she had a white daddy. It's doubtful there was a marriage, and in Mississippi at that time there would have been no grounds for an interracial common law marriage.

My thoughts on the book so far are I'm literally disgusted with how Elizabeth is treating her daughter from what I've read mae mo is a pleasant girl and add the book states i find it ridiculous that the help can raise the children but can't use the same bathroom sounds crazy just sayin that out loud

If the help is "dirty" or "diseased", it would be illogical to let the help hold, fondle and feed the children. Not logical at all. I saw your post to read through to chapter 18. Thank you.

GilmoreFan, I believe the reason we were giving our comments on a chapter by chapter basis was to give others a chance to catch up. Is it okay to now discuss the book up to chapter 18 without separating the comments by chapter?

I am now completely caught up andi have many thoughts and questions. I will start with my thoughts of the book so far. I was upset to find out Elizabeth was pregnant again just fearing how very little attention mae mobley would get when the new baby arrived. I feel a little sorry for Celia all alone trying desperately to be friends with people she could never fit in with she is almost like skeeter. I wonder if secretly Celia does indeed know how to cook by now and only pretends notto in order to have an excuse to spend more time with minny . I was very glad to find that Johnny was a kind man

Now i have many questions, What do you think of skeeters book? What do you think will come from such a book?
Were you happy minny decided to talk to skeeter?
Do you think yule Mays going to speak to skeeter?
Do you think hilly saw more in the satchel than what she's letting on?
Do you think hilly is up to something?
What is your opinion of Celia rae Foote?
Why do you think Celia hates that Mimosa tree so much? What do you think keeps them from cutting it down? Do you think they ever will?
Do you really believe celias reason for not wanting to tell her husband about minny? What could the real reason be?
If you were minny what would you do about the bottles?

How do you feel about Stuart? Would you have forgiven him so easily?
Were you surprised he showed up again? Do you think Stuarts father being a politician will have any effect on their relationship?
How do you feel about skeeters mother?
In your opinion is she overly critical because she lives skeeter and wants the best for her or because she feels skeeter isn't good enough the way she is?

So glad to have you back, Jen. I've been so caught up in the dayliness (as Eugene Walter called it) of board stuff that I haven't been able to appreciate the delicate importance of the monkeys of our lives down here in the sub-tropics, much less the important literature I should keep up with. I still have my book, but I need to do a little catching up with the rest of you, so look out, I'm coming up behind you!
