Moving my post from the Scott McKenzie thread here: When I was working in Baton Rouge radio, we, as well as several other radio stations across the country redid the part in "We Built This City" where you have a DJ talking about San Fransisco, to feature one of our own jocks doing that part. He redid it to be about Baton Rouge, and it sounded very cool. The original version featured legendary KFRC San Fransisco DJ Les Garland: I'm guessing you were somewhere near San Fransisco when this happened, right? And please tell us the bad stuff about Marty Balin. ![]() Do you remember how much crap Jefferson Airplane got about this series of radio commercials in 1967, and charges that they were 'selling out?' |

I seem to remember that Jorma and Jack were more into the blues stuff, too, but they eventually found a better way of expressing it by forming Hot Tuna.
Airplane used Levi's jeans (who didn't?) so they recorded the spots (and as you can tell, were given great freedom in what they created), but what they didn't know was that about 100 employees of the company at that very time were picketing Levi Strauss over working conditions. Abbie Hoffman wrote a letter to The Village Voice deploring the situation.
The band had no idea about the labor dispute when they recorded the spots. Levi's let them out of their contract and stopped running the commercials at Airplane's request.

I was unfamiliar with the name Jefferson Starships until they were highlighted on an episode of Supernatural. When the hunters + one very hot angel came across some hybrid monsters, Dean was told he should name them.
Dean: Jefferson Starships. Because... they're horrible and hard to kill.
Although this remark was not complimentary, the term Jefferson Starships was used many times throughout the episode. Following the show, Jefferson Starships trended on Twitter.
Although I did not recognize the name, I enjoyed a lot of their songs. I am anticipating more stories about them and I want to know if anyone agrees with Dean.

It would seem the show's writers are pretty big fans of Jefferson Airplane/Starship as they've also used both "White Rabbit" and "Miracles" in Supernatural episodes.

"Somebody to Love" was on the morning show once on my favorite pop station. I really don't get why the owner of the station thinks louder music is all right that time of day--or for that matter, anytime.
