Hi folks, I was amazed when I went on YouTube today and found that many of my TV commercials from the 1980s had been preserved. Damn, I feel like a part of history now. If you've ever wondered what I sound like, here, with the addition of much voice processing to make me sound better, is the answer to that question. I'm sure you'll get a laugh at the 1980s video production that goes along with it.

Wow, you're famous! I told you that. You just didn't believe it. Even I am amazed that my commercials are on YouTube, though. Who knows how many more are out there? I'll have fun seeking them out.

I wish I could do that for a living because it looks like fun! It's the best. You go in for maybe 30-45 minutes, do the voiceover till you get it right, and you get paid $100-$200 per spot (in the 1980s). Some months I made much more from voiceover work than I did in my radio gig.

Hi Marshall, my friend. I had no idea I'd ever find myself on YouTube. That was quite a surprise.
You can hear me at the beginning of this one, saying 'Channel 9, WAFB-TV, Baton Rouge.' I caught myself a couple of more times through the video, but I still haven't gone through the last 13 minutes or so.

Thank you, Anti.
Who in their right mind would have ever thought these were important to anyone other than me? I'm kind of amazed.

Moon, these videos are great. Thanks for sharing! Hey Bats, we've missed you! I've been searching, so far in vain, for my favorite Godchaux's spot we did each year, the "Truckload of Panties Sale." I swear to god, that's what it was called.

I can't believe Moon sounds like that.
I saw his photo on MySpace, and I guess I was expecting something completely different. His voice sounds like he should be Jon Hamm wearing a suit.

I have some killer suits, but not nearly as good as Jon Hamm's.

By the way, I just realized you can SEE me in this one:
It's the bit at :38, the 'Merry Christmas from Z-98.' I'm seated at the front, first person on the left, and I seem to be wearing a blue shirt and brown pants. (I also do the station ID at :30 in, and a few more times during the video.)
I don't look nearly as snappy as my friend J. J. Stone, who did the afternoon drive shift at the station, and is standing and wearing a suit, second from left on the back row.
We were owned by an insurance company and were a part of the Guaranty Group in Baton Rouge, who also owned Guaranty Broadcasting, which included the radio and tv station, both of which were in the same building.
Directly across the street from our building was Guaranty Income Life, where they had a commisary and dining room, and any of us could go across to get a hot freshly-prepared lunch from the cooks at a price that was next to nothing. If we didn't have time to stay, we'd get it to go and carry it across the street.
What a great time to be in radio in one the top 100 markets in the nation. We all felt like Kings of the Universe.

Thats cool thanks for sharing your voice sounds familiar to me. All of my TV commercials ran in the south (that I know of): Louisiana, Florida, Mississippi, and there may have been some in Georgia. The radio shows were in Louisiana and Mississipi, however Z-98 in Baton Rouge was a 100 thousand watt FM station, and you could pick it up for hundreds of miles around, particularly to the north.

I also thought you sounded familiar, is it possible you've done commercials or any of your commercials ran during the early (maybe to mid) -90s? I've been in northeast Florida all my life, so I'm thinking maybe I've seen one your commercials.

It is entirely possible, based on the info I see from Wikipedia regarding the stores located in Florida, but these would have been in the late 1980s rather than the 1990s most probably: "In the late 1980s, two Florida based retail chains were purchased allowing the company to enter the fast growing Florida market. In 1987 Goudchaux/Maison Blanche acquired the ten-unit Robinson's of Florida on Florida's Gulf Coast from May Department Stores; in 1988 they also bought the five-unit Jacksonville-based "May Florida" (formerly May Cohens) from May. The Goudchaux name was dropped at this time and all the stores were renamed Maison Blanche. But the rapid expansion coupled with the oil-related recession in Louisiana proved to be too much for the company to manage, and in 1991 Maison Blanche sold eight west and central Florida stores to Dillard's, leaving it with eight Louisiana stores and eight Florida stores." These would have been TV commercials where I did voice-over only. The one spot I can think of where I appeared on camera was for a Capital City Glass TV commercial in Baton Rouge. My big lines were "My electric bill is out of sight!" and "Yeah, but-" while my colleague J. J. Stone did most of the rest of the exposition.

I swear to god, that's what it was called. They must have hand selected you for that one. I was wondering if that store had any relationship to the now defunct Gottschalks chain we had out here in the west. I don't think so, though.

Hey Bats! The problem was that I kept giggling over the line 'Truckload of Panties Sale' in the recording studio. I don't know how many takes it took to get a serious reading on that line, but it was lot. If my spots ever ran in California someone owes me money.

Actually, I kind of figured that was the case. I almost asked you how you kept your composure through that. Too funny. Sounds like a fun way to make money. I hope you are able to track it down.

Now, I can truthfully say I know a celebrity who was in both radio and television. I will certainly embellish the story of Moon telling ladies he had a truckload of panties.
