I am a huge fan of this series, there have been many spin-offs of this show, there was Stargate SG-1, Stargate: Atlantis and Stargate Universe.
This series was based off a movie called Stargate which starred Kurt Russell and James Spader.
The movie wasn't a bad one in fact it was quite interesting to watch but the series was much better in my opinion.
The Stargate SG-1 series ran for 10 seasons until it was cancelled by the Sci-Fi channel and a spin off series spun off from that which was called Stargate Atlantis and when that series ended after about 5 seasons then they had the series Stargate Universe.
There were two Stargate SG-1 movies made: Ark of Truth and Continuum which takes place between seasons 9 and 10 of the series. It had all of the original cast from the series in it which was a nice touch.
The Stargate SG-1 series is my personal favorite of them, personally because of Michael Shanks' character Dr. Daniel Jackson.

Richard Dean Anderson-Colonel (later promoted to General) Jack O'Neill
Amanda Tapping-Captain (later promoted to Major) Samantha Carter

Many of the original cast appeared in the spin-off series except for Don S. Davis but he was reference as was Teryl Rotheryl both of the characters they portrayed had died and Don S. Davis died a year after he had left the series.
The cast had many adventures to many planets and encountered many aliens, some more human looking than others and dealt with many enemies along the way.
