I would like to suggest for our next book, one that affected me greatly. Months after I'd finished I could not stop thinking about it. It affected me emotionally for that long. I started reading the second half of the book by rationing myself, because I didn't want it to end. It's by one of my favorite authors, John Irving. The book is titled "A Prayer for Owen Meany." I was not the same after reading this book, and I don't mean that in a bad way. Once you read it you will never forget it. There was a movie made from the novel which is great, but not nearly as good, called Simon Birch. I've never read it a second time, but I'd love to with you guys, and to see what you think. It would be a much richer experience reading it with other people. Anyway, that one gets my vote. It's the novel that has affected me most as a reader, and a writer as well. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Prayer_for_Owen_Meany

For my second suggestion The last time they met by Anita shreve. This is more than a love story it is perhaps more real life than that as moon says this is a novel that stays with you. This is a story that keeps resurfacing in my mind urging me to read it over again and id like to. Its a tale of disappointed lovers who never really let go of eachother a tale of the people that live in their future after they part.ultimately it is a Story of the twists and turns life holds for everyone

No, does not matter. They are all the same, with the exception of one that has a newer preface. The novel is the same in all.
Here is the description of the novel:
"I am doomed to remember a boy with a wrecked voice—not because of his voice, or because he was the smallest person I ever knew, or even because he was the instrument of my mother's death, but because he is the reason I believe in God; I am a Christian because of Owen Meany."
In the summer of 1953, two eleven-year-old boys—best friends—are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy's mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn't believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen, after that 1953 foul ball, is extraordinary.
As you probably know, I am not religious at all, even though I love this novel and Elvis's gospel music. It's a story about transcendence and redemption, and all I can say is that it affected me like no other novel.
I wasn't the same after reading it. And I think it has that capacity for all readers who are open to the capacity to feel, to love, and to be inspired by even the most unlikely hero.

Thank you. I am reading this book even if it is not chosen for the synchro-read. I can't resist reading a book that altered you.

Anti I was thinking the same thing I feel compelled to read this book. I'm so torn between the suggestions "Compelled" is exactly how I feel about reading "A Prayer for Owen Meany." Also, I want to read books that are recommended by others so that I will be exposed to ideas and plots I would not ordinarily choose.

If you are feeling compelled, Owen Meany would say that there is probably something to that.
Here are a couple of trailers from the movie that was made--only the first half of the book was used, so John Irving requested it be given a different name.
But the kid that played Simon Birch in this movie will always be my vision of Owen Meany. The movie's good. The book, ten times better.
