I have only ever caught maybe a few episodes here and there completely out of order. How would you say this show ranks up to other shows of a similar tone, genre, whatever?
How is the plot, acting, character development, humor, and all that in this show?

I think you might love the humor. Dean is snarky and so is Bobby if you watch the first five years. I think this show is better than most of the shows in its genre because it combines drama and scary episodes to develop a plot that kept us guessing. All seasons are plot-driven with some stand-alone episodes thrown in for fun. The monster-of-the-week episodes were often scary and appealed to horror-movie fans. The development of the bond between the Winchester guys is what enthralled the fans and has kept the show on the air all these years. When they say "I would die for you", they mean it literally. They play pranks on each other, they fight each other and they lie to each other all the time, but there is no doubting the Winchester bond. The urban legend monsters during the first two seasons were too scary for me, but I kept watching anyway. The actors are professional and believable. The Fight Club contains a fun thread about the brothers' acting ability. displacedcwloungefan.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=spnfc&thread=1923&page=1#77313The show has an uncanny ability to have the best supporting actors and guest stars of any show of any genre that I have watched. They often become fan favorites and fans invite them to all the conventions. Many of the supporting cast are so humorously snarky that they can get one up on Dean. It is a show that will at times laugh at itself by inserting comments about cast and crew into the episodes. The fans, of course, recognize the meta comments. Seasons 1 and 2 can be watched out of sequence without too much confusion. I would not recommend watching season 3 out of sequence. I would not recommend starting with seasons 6 or 7 because there was a dramatic shift in direction that is not representative of the Supernatural that the fans grew to love. Gee, I was wordy on this.

This show does have elements of Buffy and Angel, where you have the classic good vs evil, it has monsters, and it has the season long arcs, it has humor and it has grief. But most of all it has and is about family, no matter what else it has, it is about two brothers who fight, travel and work together. They will go to the ends of the earth for each other, and have almost literally done it. The sense of family is overwhelming and even when things are strained between them, you can still feel the bond between them.
Let me give you a brief rundown of how I got hooked on it- 2010 I caught a marathon of it, and then I saw a live episode, and I have watched every episode live since. that was the fifth season. At the end of the fifth season I went out and bought all 4 previous seasons and was caught up in time for the start of S6.
There are some very good secondary characters who add a lot to the show and they are a part of SPN also.
I think if you were going to start watching , I would start with S1 and go from there, you can see how they grow and change from season to season. I can also tell you this is the only show I have ever felt this way about and I am an older SPN fan.

Hi November I agree with everything you said. This is the only show I have ever felt this way about too.

Darn, we did not give enough recognition to character development. Character development is powerful and sometimes even gut-wrenching. So many unusual twists and shocks. Amazing. Not going to give you any spoilers.

To understand why this show is so damn good see the episode that finally got my hubby watching the show. It's called Mystery spot from Season Three everything is in there. It's so damn funny, then heartbreaking and sad but so awesome. Of course some stuff won't make sense if you don't watch it from the from Season one, but all I can ask is: Do these taco taste funny?
