I've debated making a thread about this for the past two days. Every time I read about it I find myself in tears. Then I remind myself, we are a community, and we are people who care for one another. Otherwise, we wouldn't be here. The incredible sorrow of this inhuman act cries out to everything about us that makes us human. So, we should have a place to talk about it. If you want to, that is. It seems like not posting a thread about it, though, just wouldn't be right. In addition to the 20 children, aged 6-7, killed in cold-blooded murder, were six adults at the school who died trying to protect them. The principal, Dawn Hochsprung, who had just instituted new security measures at the school, died when she ran into the hallway and tried to subdue the shooter. Teacher Vicki Soto hid her 16 chilldren in a closet, then bravely stayed outside it, telling the gunman when he came to her room that all of her students had been sent to the gym. She was killed, but the children she loved survived thanks to her bravery. She was 27, and her lifelong ambition had been to be a teacher. Don't we think at this point that this has got to stop, that we cannot let it continue?

I can't stop thinking of those kids... they were so young. And those who survived, the trauma they'll have to live with... But God Bless the heroes, if it weren't for them, it would have been even worse. www.theatlanticwire.com/national/2012/12/these-are-some-heroes-newtown/60024/My thoughts and prayers are with the friends and family affected by this tragedy. And yes, these shootings need to be stopped.

I think its very sad and this person is horrible dont take being miserable out on small innocent children and adults just trying to have a normal school day. I read about another teacher a first grade teacher who hid her kids in the bathroom, the kids were saying I don't want to die I want to have Christmas.
Those kids are fine too, we started a prayer chain at Facebook me and some friends in memory of these innocent people who died.im a nursery school teacher and if this ever happened I would protect those kids so fast it's what we are suppose to do we are responsible for the kids when their parents drop them at school..

My sympathy and prayers go out to the children, their families and their friends who are all suffering. They might never understand why this happened to them, but they will know that people quickly tried to help.
The Evicted members have been talking about modern day heroes, and the teachers and staff showed they were heroes and were willing to do anything to protect the children.

I have known and loved so many people who are teachers, from those who inspired me and made me a better person, to those I know even more intimately.
I had a long-term relationship with a woman with a master's degree in early childhood development. She preferred to teach kindergartners ("while they're still sweet," as she would say) and I would visit her classes and tell the kids about how sound worked. I even brought my electric guitar one time and played for them. She was right. They were incredibly sweet and loving. They looked so much like the kids from Sandy Hook in the video above. I understood immediately why she would want to do this above all else.
My own brother is a teacher in Georgia, and his wife is a school counselor. He prefers to teach sixth grade students, and has been named Teacher of the Year more than once.
My cousin teaches students with disabilities in Pensacola, and his wife is an art instructor in the same school district.
Teachers should be paid like we pay NBA superstars, for they are the real heroes, and affect hundreds more lives.

As a Sunday School teacher, I really am grateful for each moment I spend with my students, I know I have always wanted to be a teacher ever since I was 8 and I am grateful for the opportunity to teach at church each week.
The heroes of this tragic shooting indeed are those teachers who risked their lives so that these children could have a chance to live another day, I know as a teacher I would risk everything I have to protect them, even though I am not their parent, a parental instinct in me comes out when I see them hurt, sad, angry or even happy.
These children and teachers' memories will live long into my memory and I will never forget how each day and each life is truly precious!

In a truly bizarre twist on this tragic story, the monsters at the Westboro Baptist Church have announced plans to picket the vigils for the slain Sandy Hill Elementary students and staff, saying "God sent the shooter":
"The Westboro Baptist Church, the controversial group known for protesting outside funerals of slain U.S. service members, announced that it will picket a vigil for the victims of Friday's Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, the second-deadliest school shooting in American history.
Shirley Phelps-Roper, a spokesperson for the group and, like most members of the organization, a relative of the group's founder, Fred Phelps, announced on Twitter on Saturday the group's plan "to sing praise to God for the glory of his work in executing his judgment."
It is unclear when the group plans to protest, although a tweet from Margie Phelps implied that it would be during a vigil that will be attended by President Barack Obama on Sunday evening.
Members of the Westboro Baptist Church say that America is being punished for its acceptance of gays and lesbians. In recent days, Phelps family members have sent tweets about the Connecticut shooting that have said "God sent the shooter."
That was met with this message from the hacker group Anonymous:
I have to say, I don't agree with everything Anonymous does, but in this case, more power to them.

Wow, that is really fucked up!
But one argument, those kids are not the product of homosexual marriages and love. Maybe one or two were, but that was probably it. I'm tired of God being abused, whether if it's the excuse he's not allowed in schools or he sent the shooter. Some of us think Muslims are bad, with the hijackers claiming that Allah sent the planes towards the World Trade Center eleven years ago, and this makes us look just as bad no thanks to the bastards at Westboro Baptist Church!

If members of the Westboro Baptist Church picket those families, that will be the most hate-filled act I have ever heard of. They will scar the minds of the children and cause the families to hate them when the families should be seeking peace and love. I hope publicity of their plans will dissuade them.
In the past, one of the Phelps daughters left because she could no longer live like that. If they do this, I hope more of the family members leave the church.

We had a little incident where I work today. Nobody was hurt or killed but we didnt know what to expect after Friday, in connecticut. At around 3:45 some women walked in and demanded soda , clothing ,food .we have no soda in the kitchen,. Both me and my mom told the women, there is no soda and the woman insisted there was.
I was like no there's not and my mom Said the same.the woman than said I know where the soda is,I know where the money is.i told her you need to leave now get out of here.she starting saying she would shoot up the place and than headed downstairs to get soda we dont have there. we wanted to know where jose our janitor had went, since he wasnt there, we called father bird who was back there in a flash. Then we also called the cops, they got there fast too. We weren't sure if she was serious or not. All of us left in the building were me, my mom, Jen brown, the assistant priest and the director of our school Julie who locked herself in the office .
The woman headed downstairs and by that time the cops got there and fast and took the woman out. Jose was stupid and let this homeless women in one Saturday And gave her Soda, because he ordered food, she remembered the place and just walked right in.
I was so pissed after this I went up and said nicely to Julie we need to keep all these doors locked from now on until the building is empty with everything going on and she agreed. When stupid Jose left today he left the doors unlocked and that was why the woman just walked in.
If this was during school hours which are 9am to 3 pm and if the woman was serious about shooting up the place which we weren't sure if she was 21 teachers, many church workers ,two directors and many many children lives would have been in danger.Hopefully they all have a meeting on what to do, and hopefully those damn doors stay locked from now on.

Forgive me if this is a bad thing to say, but I will be surprised if no one has ever retaliated against them Westboro people. If them people ever want any respect out of anyone else, they are going to have to show some first because if they don't, someone one of these days is going to end up giving them a dose of their own medicine and if them Westboro people can't take it, THEY SHOULDN'T HAVE DISHED IT OUT IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!
God bless you and THEIR victims always!!!
Holly
P.S. Have the tables ever been turned on them people? Have any of their gatherings ever been rudely interrupted by those who chose to picket them in return?

As a person who owns several guns over the last few days my conservative veiws have been under some scrutiny for a comment I made but just as you all have thoughts I have my own. right after I started college there was a shooting on campus two people shot both lived but it does bake you think what if there were less no carry areas I mean what if something like this happened again to another school or on campus I mean the cops dont even carry. would the person be stoppable. And am I wrong for wanting to continue to carry a concealed firearms. what needs to me done now?
Of course im sorry for all these people amazing people.

Ashley, I understand you want to be able to protect yourself, and I hope no one has been unkind.
My local news mentioned the NRA took down their facebook page today. They must have been overwhelmed with comments.

In my opinion, there are two things that need to be done. We need stricter gun laws and we need a better mental health plan. Doing only one or the other won't solve the problem.

I don't have guns or want them.
Several people who go to my church, including a 97-year-old woman who hasn't in the past few months because of health problems, still hunt.
I am happy to say that I didn't choose to make this a Chewy Chips Ahoy headline. At one time, when thing happened that resulted in such a headline (a smaller local paper had a normal-looking front page but it was still at the top of the page), I felt like I was being insensitive to the victims if I didn't keep it. Now somehow it seems insensitive to the victims TO keep it, and I've got too much stuff and anytime I can throw something out, that's a positive thing.
I can't remember whether the box, which came from the grocery store and had packages of Chewy Chips Ahoy in it and is labelled accordingly, actually has the 9-11 headlines in it. I may have just set aside anything that significant with the intention of moving it to the box later. The Panthers went to the Super Bowl a few years back and that may still be in the collection. But the box is full and I have to remove stuff to add more and I just don't have the time to really do that. But I'm feeling more comfortable with the idea of throwing such headlines out. I didn't keep the Virginia Tech incident either.
All of this is pointless since I haven't actally READ what I didn't "keep". But I will!

Forgive me if something like this has already been said here in this chat, but to me, this whole thing is not just about mental illness. It is about responsibility and discipline. Yeah there are people out there who have a mental matter on their health plate, but not everyone does and to me those who don't are the ones who need to be shown some discipline. I remember what Reba once said to Barbra Jean during a season three episode of her first TV show. She said, "You have to pick your battles because the parent with the most rules never wins, so just make them feel safe, teach them respect, and only when you have to: Bring the hammer down." To me, she couldn't have been more right about that, but sadly what has been going on now these days is that the hammer is not being brought down when it should be anymore. Parents are not telling their children "No." when they need to be hearing that word anymore. God bless you always!!! Holly P.S. To answer what the next question would be which to me may be "What is the best way to discipline your kids?" In my opinion, physical punishment should be the last resort since such a thing is done to so many who don't deserve it. I think that taking away privileges is the best way to send a message across to your kid because there are so many privileges that can be taken from them for any amount of time when a whipping only lasts for a few seconds.

Where's the outrage over all the "innocent" young people being slaughtered in Chicago, Detroit and L.A.
EVERY DAMN DAY?
Politicians are selective in their outrage and make stupid pronoucements about guns all while being surrounded with personal ARMED security.
Bad people will never obey gun laws. Example....Chicago.
When the government outlaws gun ownership, the only people who will have guns will be the crimminals.

At first I felt the need to be sorry but I had nothing to do this this. Why is the NRA apologizing it is not their responsibility. this is a time to stop acting out of anger and that its a time to just learn the facts and stop being so dam stubborn that both sides dont have a voice. So the other day I gave several examples of shootings that took place in gun free zones. I dont think I was being unsympathetic. This is tragic and we do was results. But a country wide ban like many are suggesting is not right ether. So what is right?

A local newspaper said a student's "Twitter message went viral. ... The message indicated since the world was going to end, maybe he 'should just go and start shooting people.' The student was adamant he was not serious, but school officials called in extra law enforcement to the school through the end of the week."
My aunt who I am visiting Sunday and Wednesday taught at this person's school for many years.
