WHY GOD MADE SUGAR COOKIES

They're warm and sweet. They melt in your mouth with buttery goodness.

When you take them out of the oven, wisps of fragrant aroma tickle your nose, and as you watch the light, yellowish circles of delight lie on the cookie sheet, you sigh in anticipation.

While the cookies are still warm, you dust the tops with sugar. The light in your kitchen bathes the wonderful little confections; you walk over to the frig to pour yourself a cold glass of milk.

Gently, you take a few of the freshly made cookies and put them on your plate. Next to the plate is the tall glass of milk.

Yes, this is heaven.

What makes it even more enjoyable is when I draw a little picture of Moon's face on the cookies...then I smash them to bits with a mallet. Over and over, I smash them. After an hour of smashing, I feel much better.

But then I feel an emptiness when I stop smashing. I feel sad, incomplete, and out of sorts. So I make more cookies with Moon's face on them. This time, however, I get a flame thrower...I set it on high. And the Moon cookies are burned beyond recognition.

I am happy.

And any time I see a person use a semi-colon (my own, a result of surgery) correctly, like any good Southerner, I positively get the vapors.

Doesn't change the fact that this is a beautiful piece of writing by one bit, though.

I can't remember when I've read a better sensory scene about cooking and a kitchen. And that includes my friend Michael's splendiforous three-page description of his grandmother's kitchen.
