Yep, the Veronica Mars movie has been greenlit via Kickstarter! www.aintitcool.com/node/61450That's pretty amazing news, and could signal a real change in how movies and television shows are funded. I know the rest of my fellow Firefly fans are going to be excited about this possibility.

This is huge news, and thank you to Spoonie for breaking it here first. While this is nerdgasm time for all Veronica Mars fans, the implications are even greater on what this means for television and movie fans--it's that big. And that deserves a separate thread, just for the overall sea change this means. So, discuss the amazing news of the Kickstarter Veronica Mars movie here, and for the larger implications of it all, the other thread will be there as well. But hey, this is Spoonie's thread, and you damn well know it's gonna be a lot funnier.

*pops collar* you know it.... but when the world is overwhelmed by the JERICHO zealots clamoring for a PIECE OF THE PIE, you'll know why.... it might be too late to save the last pockets of humanity, but you'll know why!!

what sort of movie do people expect to make with 3 million dollars? but here's what more geeks say on the matter..... the first guy's comments are food for thought. the "financiers" aren't investing in this... more like financing for free for already-millionaires.... and is a too-thin t-shirt two sizes too small REALLY worth it? IS IT???

I'm disregarding the fact that many geeks are millionaires and billionaires now, and that geeks are just the people who are liable to fund stuff they're passionate about.
Investors on all levels get at least something tangible back, whether it be invitations to the world premiere, a Blue-Ray disc of the movie, a speaking role in the film, or whatever.
Current population of the United States is over 313 million. Average gift to Kickstarter is $67.
Let's take 1% of the population, which is 3.13 million people.
Let's reduce that down to one million people, or a third of one percent of people, all donating (some more, some less,) to come up with the $67 average.
That's $67 million dollars, and you can get a movie made with that.
It may not happen this year or next, but looking at recent events, like the first privately funded vehicle (from SpaceX) docking at the international space station recently, I predict you'll see fans and investors getting together sometime within the next 5 years to fund a major motion picture or television series.

And 2 million (and growing) is not the worst budget for a movie. Especially one that doesn't rely on special effects.

Kristen did "When in Rome", which aired on The CW during the State of the Union address. I enjoyed it and thought she was good in it, but it was regarded as junk.
