When I first heard about Kickstarter, a website where individuals could support initiatives that were important to them, and which they saw as important enough to donate money I was cautiously optimistic. I wondered if it could possibly translate into the media forms many of us love most--movies and television shows. That would be a huge leap. For as long as we have had television programs (over 60 years now) and movies (even longer) the funds to produce mass entertainment have been controlled by television networks, motion piciture studios, and advertisers. That ended today. Rob Thomas, creator of the Veronica Mars series on the WB and actress Kristen Bell started a Kickstarter effort to create a Veronica Mars movie. It would be a low budget production. Their goal was to raise $2 million within 30 days. They did that within ten hours, and currently have $2.5 million pledged at this point, with 20 days left to go. The movie will now be made. I should mention that this would not have been possible without Warner Bros giving their OK and agreeing to participate in marketing and distribution, so kudos for them. This is a major change in how things are done, and I think the repercussions will be amazing. What shows or movies would you like to see get a second chance? You can vote here on the EW website: popwatch.ew.com/2013/03/13/veronica-mars-kickstarter-movie-version-cult-tv/or just tell us in a post below what your dream project might be.

Like you, I was cautiously optimistic when I first heard about Kickstarter, but this is awesome news!
I'm thinking maybe they should give a Firefly TV show another chance (or another big damn movie would be shiny)! I also wouldn't mind a Smallville movie, I know they're doing those comics now, but even just a made-for-TV movie would be super!

The Kickstarter project for the Veronica Mars movie is now over $3 million dollars. As you might imagine, the first thing everyone in the world asked was how will this affect Firefly, and Joss Whedon has just in the last few minutes replied not now. For one thing he is contractually tied up for the next couple of years with The Avengers II movie and the S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series. Likewise, Nathan Fillion is tied up with Castle for the next two years. He also points out that it would probably take ten times the amount of money to make a Firefly movie as it would take to make Veronica Mars. www.buzzfeed.com/adambvary/joss-whedon-on-kickstarter-and-fireflyMy prediction? By the time he and the rest of the cast are free to do this, the floodgates will well be unhinged. This thing is going to snowball like no one has ever seen.
