I don't know how quite to to say this, but the film critic who meant most to me during my formative years, has sadly passed away. I cannot imagine a world in which Roger Ebert does not exist. He showed me things about movies that I never could have learned from anyone less passionate than he. His loss is major. I can't believe he is gone. The world is a sadder place for me today. He was brilliant. I will always miss him.

I heard about that earlier today. So sad. RIP Roger Ebert.

A great icon of Chicago and the entertainment industry! Thanks Mr. Ebert for your hard-work and wonderful reviews.
On the radio this morning during his obits, they were playing a famous quote of his:
"The best movies to review are the terrible ones. The second best are the terrific movies. The hardest to review are the so-so movies."

He was kind of an ass, but it was still a crappy long battle with cancer. I, for one, will not miss his reviews.

Siskel & Ebert became the only critics I would make an effort to tune in. When they disagreed on a movie, their passionate debates were entertaining. "Two thumbs up" became part of my vocabulary because of them.

He looked like the kid from "A Christmas Story" in his final years.
I never followed him. I liked Leonard Maltin back in the days when I could still tolerate "Entertainment Tonight".
Wednesday on the way home I heard he was just getting more treatment.

and yet Rex Reed still draws breath. not that there's anything wrong with that!!! If we were to make a live sacrifice of Rex Reed, do you think there's a chance they'd send both Siskel AND Ebert back to us? It's worth a try. I agree with Anti. It was the interaction between the two of them that made the show so special, especially when they disagreed. Some of the most passionate, witty discussions of film I've ever seen. Unfortunately we lost Gene Siskel in 1999, and although Roger teamed up through the years with other partners, none matched the vibrance that shone when those two sat down across the aisle from one another and discussed cinema. I tended to agree with Roger most of the time, and if he gave a movie an enthusiastic thumbs up, I can't remember a time that it didn't turn out to be a film that I really loved. We did disagree on a few things. He didn't like Tarentino's Reservoir Dogs or Lynch's Blue Velvet. Both are films that I watch over and over. I valued his opinion enough to read several of his books about film, and half a year ago, his memoir. His commentary track included on the soundtrack to Citizen Kane is amazing. I always learned something from him and was entertained. And he almost never steered me wrong. Farewell, Roger. Yours was a life well-lived. Thumbs up from me, forever.

I saw this cartoon today, and it brought tears to my eyes. It's amazing what a cartoonist can do: I liked these as well:
