The beloved country music star has died sadly! He was 81 years old. He had many country hits including: White Lightning He stopped loving her today. He had been married to the late Tammy Wynette not once but twice. As long as we have his recordings--and radio stations that actually care who he is (a lot of statns call themsleves country but don't play his music--will they today?)--we'll still have him.
The way he lived it's amazing he stayed with us this long.
But it's still sad.

I have an uncle who actually used to "hang" with George after his shows in Chicago when they were younger because that is where my uncle lived at the time and when I say "hang", I mean do what George was known for back in them days. On April 10th, my uncle lost one of his sisters who happened to be the only grandparent that I had left. She was 91. I am so ready for the month of May to be here because the month of April has been way too death filled and it isn't even over yet. (burying my head)
God bless you and my uncle and George's family always!!!

Oh my god. I have been away at work since early this morning and am just now hearing this.
George Jones was one of the people I've always wanted to see perform live at least once. That won't happen now. But I feel so lucky to have been alive while he was making music. The only equivalent I can think of would have been to be around while Hank Williams was alive. His has always been my favorite country voice.
He could always tear my heart apart in two seconds flat.
Who's gonna fill his shoes?
Nobody.
I will miss him forever. Goodbye, Possum, and thank you.

I agree, my friend. The heart of country music is broken tonight. Just two weeks ago I gave a presentation on poetry in my small southern town. Trying to get across the idea that poetry is everywhere and you just don't realize it, I began with a reading of "He Stopped Loving Her Today." Tonight, as I look across my backyard into the woods, I see fireflies for the first time this year, and I can't help but think "White Lightnin'." In high school I was a member of a rock band, and I'm happy to say that we had a diverse repertoire. We played current stuff, like Jethro Tull, Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen, Brownsville Station, great old 50s stuff, and some country, and one of those country songs was "She Thinks I Still Care." Although I've always been a George Jones fan, we came to it in a roundabout way. Leon Russel had just released an album of country songs titled "Hank Wilson's Back" and this was the first place we ever heard the song. Of course, once we read the album notes we realized it was a George Jones song. So, we listened to it, and went 'shit, who can do George Jones?' The answer was no one. Not even my brother, who could do Hank Williams 'cry' in his voice perfectly while playing drums. We like to think our version came out somewhere between the George Jones and Leon Russel version--that's what we liked to think. If you're gonna aim for something, aim for George Jones. I'm just happy to be able to say that I once sang with a band that performed a George Jones song in public. That's more than enough for the likes of me. Nothing makes up for his loss.

Thanks for that info, Holly. I'm hoping that means that those of us who cannot physically attend will be able to view some of the speakers and the service.
Somewhere tonight in heaven there's a man on a riding lawn mower searching for a liquor store ('cause Tammy's got the key to the chariot.)
And he's got Hank, Waylon and Johnny onboard with him.

Unfortunately I had to be at work during the funeral service, which was streamed live over the internet. I don't have the cable channels that are playing back the service, so I've been looking for it on the internet-- for a site where I could watch the whole thing. But I've had no luck so far, except for this, and it's amazing,
At 1:20 in Vince Gill begins to lose it as he tries to sing amidst tears. At 2:20 in, the entire audience stands up in support of him. He finally finishes, and I don't know who had more tears in their eyes at that point, him or me.
I don't know when I've seen anything more beautiful.

I loved when Alan Jackson took off his hat while he was finishing up the final song: "He Stopped Loving Her Today".
God bless you and AJ and George's family always!!!
