He is indeed very funny but a few times you see a serious side to him, that's how he got his first Emmy. His best friend had gotten killed in a car accident and Alex has to come to terms as to why he is still alive.
This was in the 5th Season of Family Ties in the episodes "A, my name is Alex" Parts one and two

You mean Eve? I can't stand Annie at times but she seems cool though. I like Graham the best of the kids.
