Aeryn!!! How ya doin, chica?
2013 was an interesting year, lots of irons in the fire, as my mom would say.
Highlight was the Leo Awards! Canada's version of the Emmys/Oscars, for Canadian productions. Got to put on the fanciest outfit I've ever worn and spend an evening with the glitterati. Invited to see what $350K of diamond earrings looks like, up close, by one of the actresses as we were powdering our noses in the restroom. We both agreed her own earrings looked just fine, and the ones she was given to wear didn't seem worth the 2 bodyguards that came with them. And when "After" won....OMG. It was the most magic moment ever. Walking up on stage with my friends to accept the award was like an out-of-body experience. And walking off the stage put me a foot away from Amanda Tapping, she was about to walk out to announce the next category!
Later, my friend Aaron who was there for our "Last Fall of Ashes" series said "Oh, I didn't know you were a fan of Amanda! We worked together on Stargate, I could have introduced you." Dammit! So close. Ah well, maybe in 2014 our paths will cross again.
No new filming adventures like I had in 2012, but plenty to keep me busy, pitches and new pilot concepts that needed art and packaging. And a trip to Atlanta, for that city's entry into the world of webseries festivals! I was there to represent Frostbite, and worked as a volunteer too. Learning the operations from the inside, because I'm going to be a part of the Vancouver WebFestival, in May, and wanted to pick up ideas and lessons-learned to pass along.
My friend Rachel from "Aeternus" got a last-minute flight from Toronto to join me in Atlanta, so we got to pal around and hang out, too cool! And we made new friends, people we'd met in the film community on twitter, but not in person. The guy behind "CapSouth" and the AWESOME Tailgate32 guys. OMG those two guys are CRAZY! They brought beer to their series screening - tailgating the festival!
And right now, 2014 seems to be shaping up to be a very exciting year! I'm not sure if I'll go to the big LA Webfest in March, or just save all my money for a longer stay in Vancouver. But either way, festivals will be on tap!
Then there's a new development: on Thanksgiving, one of the producers I've been chatting with on twitter asked me to call him, turns out our hour+ phone call was an interview! I'm going to be working on an indie horror film - The Rectory - to be filming in North Carolina sometime next fall. Probably also will be doing graphic design and BTS photography too...but my official title will be Assistant to the Producer. I can't wait until we do the location scouting - my first location scouting experience! W00T!
And in a very bizarre twist - I might be helping out Orlando Jones on art needs for his own company, in some capacity. Orlando Jones as in Captain Irving on Sleepy Hollow! *dies*
Again, from some random chatter on twitter! There was some emailing and connecting with his team, plans are in development that will start to gel after the New Year...so Lord knows what's involved, but whatever it is I'm sure it will be interesting.
**NOTE** If The Rectory is filming in the same general area as Sleepy Hollow next fall, you better believe I'll find some way to either get an invite from Orlando or do some covert ops sneaking around to watch the action on their set, (cough Tom Mison cough) MUAHhahaha
And who knows what else 2014 will bring? TV pick up is in discussions, I've been messaging with one of the (single!) actors from the "Star Trek: Renegades" production...
Yes, 2013 was an active year, but for me it looks like 2014 will take the action to an 11!!! I am so very thankful to all my friends and the blessings I've been given, with them I am constantly inspired by their awesomeness and the world is full of color, creativity and magic.
So...I've monologued enough. Anyone else have stories? I'd love to hear them!
