The Mars Curiosity rover has been recording a temperature of -29. In some areas of the U.S. it will be colder than that.

Yikes! I hope poor Timmy will be able to either stay home from work tomorrow or service the work trucks in the garage.

It was sunny, warm and beautiful in NorCal today.
I just noticed that I got a little bit sunburned from standing outside for hours chatting with some friends.
We could really use some rain and snow here! Yes. . .careful what you wish for. . .

A couple of photos of MI. One from sliding glass door looking over back yard - railing is four foot high, it's our upper deck. The lower deck is buried. The other photo is from the front door - after clearing with snowblower and shovel.

Why hasn't anyone invented a remote controlled snow blower? One could look our their window and using something that looks like a video game controller and controlled the snow blower.

I was watching an ad for the robot vacuum floor sweeper and then the news reported on the national weather forecast damn a little too late to invent the next must have gadget for most of the country.

They are calling this storm 'the Polar Vortex.' Polar Vortex sounds like a title for a bad movie made for the SYFY channel.

A doctor on my local news station wants the mayor to close schools because of how cold it's going to be tomorrow. I HIGHLY doubt that will happen.

Deep freeze warnings are in effect here in North Florida, even. Last time it got this cold here was in the 1980s. Some schools are closing, first time I've seen that happen due to winter weather (in my lifetime, at least). At one point today, Chicago was colder than the South Pole. This polar vortex has already claimed 13 lives, mostly from traffic accidents, one from hypothermia. Stay inside, stay safe, stay warm and keep us updated if you can. www.news4jax.com/news/-It-s-too-darn-cold-Freeze-brings-danger/-/475880/23787746/-/rdbj93z/-/index.html

It's 2 degrees right now. Supposed to get down to -7 and we have a wind chill warning in effect until noon tomorrow.

Never ever thought I'd have to re-sticky this thread, but here we go. They're saying 2 inches of snow possibly in south Alabama.

Nah, they don't. A lot of stuff is cancelled tomorrow.
I learned how to drive through snow a few years back when I drove to Memphis. Luckily I didn't need snow tires--I had a four-wheel drive Jeep. And the chance to see Graceland with three or four inches of snow was just amazing.

We are getting steady sleet now in south Alabama. We never get sleet. And behind that is snow, which is even more rare. 30 degrees now with a wind chill factor of 21, and headed down to 22 degrees for the overnight low.

I like to get a little goofy in it now and then, because it lets me feel the limits and helps me improve my skills. Our chain controls don't allow you through with 4-wheel drive, unless you also have snow tires on all four wheels (they inspect each vehicle). The snow tires are actually safer in many situations than the 4-wheel drive.

Never ever thought I'd have to re-sticky this thread, but here we go. They're saying 2 inches of snow possibly in south Alabama. It is rather insane that it is snowing in Alabama, while at the same time pouring rain in the mountains of CA, where we desperately need snow. The snow pack is only 13% of normal! The ground is still frozen, though, so the rain is going anywhere but where it should, which causes flooding issues. Like I said, insane. And I guess I spoke too soon, because the rain turned to snow overnight, and we have about 8 inches of snow out there already. Deep snow on top of frozen rain puddles should make for a very interesting driving experience. I am about to find out.
