I am giving it a 3. It is a stand-alone episode and deals with Garth’s absence during the past six months. During a hunt, Garth was bitten by a werewolf and he became one. He was ready to kill himself but was saved by a woman whom he later married. It was interesting that there were 2nd and 4th generation lycanthropes in the group.
When Dean talked to Garth about Kevin, I thought they would mention Kevin’s mother, but nothing was said about her.
I enjoyed Dean’s reaction to the idea of a werewolf family inviting him to dinner. I am glad they cooked his food although they were eating raw entrails.
Dean’s knife-throwing skills are impressive and we know he is accurate with a silver bullet.
I did not expect the brothers to be so awkward with each other. I am glad that Dean opened up to Sam and indicated he wanted him to travel with him. I probably need to watch the ending again because I am not sure what Sam’s final comments meant…something along the lines of “hunt together – yes, brothers…”

I give it a 3. It was a pretty good episode, although, I must admit, I was sorry to see that Garth is now a werewolf. As for hunting with Dean and Sam, how will he be able to control himself (and the rest of the pack) at the full moon? I'm surprised that Dean didn't bring that up. I can already see that the mark of Cain is having some effect on Dean. He seems colder and even more than ready to "shoot first, ask questions later." You'd have thought that Sam would have noticed that if he wasn't so busy still being pissed off at Dean. And even though I know it's a bad thing for Dean, it was fun to see him in full hunter mode....and so smart in the process...hiding his scent and awesome knife and gunshot skills. I'm surprised Sam got back into the car with Dean and just as surprised that Dean wanted him since he had been so adamant in the last episode and even in the begining of this one, that he thought it better for him to hunt alone. As for Sam, what was with the "hunt together, and brothers?" Funny how now it's Sam who doesn't trust Dean....remember when Dean said the exact same thing to Sam after Bobby got stabbed and was in the hospital? How Sam chose a demon over his own brother? Dean chose Sam, but Sam resents Dean making his decisions for him. I think Sam believes Dean is viewing him as the "little brother" again, not a full fledged hunter. Something else bothered me. When Sam saw Dean's arm and Dean told him about the "mark of Cain," there was little else said about it. Seriously? Shouldn't Sam be concerned that Dean has an Old Testament scar burned into his arm? I thought that perhaps the writers would hide that for a while, but they had Dean basically tell Sam exactly how and why he got that new scar with very little fanfare or follow-up. Oh well, maybe they'll make more of it in later episodes. I wonder if we'll see Garth again. I don't see how he'll survive. I missed next week's preview. Hope it's good.?

I must agree that there should have been more emotion and more discussion about the ramifications of having the "mark of Cain". We are not talking about a tattoo...it is the mark of Cain! And all we get is a "yeah, why?" When Garth offered to hunt with Dean to atone for losing Kevin, I thought it might be useful to have a werewolf, a demon, and an angel teaming up with the boys to fight monsters. SoCal, I think you are looking at it more logically than I was. At the full moon, Garth would have difficulty. Plus other hunters would not be so understanding.
The previews looked like a commercial for weight loss and I fast forwarded through it before I realized it was about next week's episode. It said something about losing the weight overnight without dieting. The results looked horrible.

Yeah, @the avenging angel, it looks like it could be a silly stand-alone. I must say, however, that Sam looked "smokin" in that work-out outfit! I hope the preview is just a little misleading and that there is some "meat" to the episode. I want to see Dean get more effects from the mark and Sam to notice and get concerned about his brother. What do you think?

I have watched this episode about 4 times now and I think I can finally give a review about it, it took some thinking about what we had witnessed. After I watched the first time, I thought I had missed something or they had cut some lines out. After a couple more viewings and reading lots of comments about this episode I think I finally understand what is going on here. I am not happy with this episode and it will never be a favorite od mine but I have a bit of understanding about it now. Dean thinks he is poison, he thinks he is worthless and he has a ton of guilt over Kevin and Sam and Gadreel and a laundry list of other things. So in his way he is pushing Sam away so that he could keep Sam safe. This was not pleasant to watch and I don't like that this is what we are having to deal with right now. I don't like this version of Dean who lies to Sam, he is doing what he thinks is best but it is not good for the brothers relationship. Sam is angry, and hurt and I think Dean's lack of trusting Sam is going to take a long time for Sam to move past, if he ever really does. Sam sees thru Dean's attempts to push him away so that they can work the case. I would have like to see Sam be a little more concerned about the Mark of Cain, but when Dean mentioned Crowley, Sam closed off. To be honest I have never cared much for Garth and I found his story to be kind of boring. What I think was the most important part of the episode was the end when Dean and Sam were talking. After reading different reviews and comments I think I can understand what the guys were saying to each other. First of all they are guys and they speak a different language than women, , women want to talk about feelings and other stuff and guys aren't wired that way. So they won't be as obvious as women are. I think their actions played a bigger part in how I feel about this and gives me some hope for the remainder of the season. Sam was ready to say good bye, but Dean got OUT of the car to talk to him, Dean wanted to apologize to Sam but just couldn't get the words out. Sam didn't WALK away from Dean as he could have, but stayed to talk it out. In the end Sam got IN the car with Dean, that gives me hope that they can start working towards the brother bond and healing their relationship. I don't like seeing the guys mad at each other.

On the second watching, I enjoyed some of the cute stuff, like Sam looked really good with his hair tucked behind his ears and in a suit.
I don’t get Dean’s comment that he had been gone two weeks and Sam was like an episode of “Teen Mom”. I never watch "Teen Mom" and that is probably why I did not get the reference.
November, I see your point that they were discussing the mark of Cain until Dean mentioned going on a hunt with Crowley. Then, Sam noticed that the wretching sounds had stopped in the bathroom. So, they did not brush over the mark; Garth's disappearance distracted them from further discussion.
Dean was lying through his teeth about finding evidence on Garth and I thought it was amusing that Sam was waiting to catch him.
Garth had some good lines:
"That’s Dean. He could start a fight in an empty house, but deep down inside, he’s just a big ol’ Teddy Bear."
"The jawlines and the hair are very intimidating."
"Come pray with us." (Dean's reaction made that line funny.)
Then Dean's comment to the guys who were trying to intimidate him: "Don’t you two have a chew toy or something to play with?"
Dean offered Garth a hug and said “Hurry up before I change my mind.”
The conversation at the end of the episode gave Sam an opportunity to express how he feels about what Dean did. However, Dean's body language clearly expressed to me that he is not buying into the "not act like brothers" suggestion. I think he did not want to say anything that would stop his brother from getting in the Impala.
I always find stuff to enjoy in each episode.

Not a favorite by far why did Sam just shrug off the Cain thing . but at least its a better story that dick and the leviathans.

Hi Ashley, I "think " Sam would have asked more questions about the mark of Cain had he not noticed that Garth had gotten quiet. I thought it was strange that it was dropped also. But I think with all the tension and strain between the guys that they had enough going on and will get back to it, I just don't want it to take 5 more episodes before it comes up again.
I agree, anything is better than Roman and the leviathan storyline
