I woke up to the news this morning…. what a great role model to modern child actors and anybody who thinks that they can't re-invent themselves at any time of their lives. She was an ambassador, box-office superstar, mother, wife and business woman… not in that order of importance. Great lady!
But…. here is a quote from one of my very, very, very, very (x45) liberal friends:
As an adult, Shirley Temple Black was a right-wing Republican on the wrong side of history and human decency. In 1967, she ran for Congress on a platform of defending US military action in Vietnam and extremist positions on taxes, law and order, and drug addiction. A rabid anti-communist, she was installed into positions with the UN and State Department by Nixon, Ford, Reagan, and Bush the Elder, with one of her favorite posts being Ambassador to Czechoslovakia from 1989 to 1992 -- where, apparently confused about the role of a diplomat and the decade in which she was living, she said, "I was told I was going to a Stalinist backwater, one of the toughest countries around... And I thought, 'Good! Let's go get 'em!'"
Just some perspective that is unlikely to be offered in her obits today, which seem to want to focus on her roles as a moppet who couldn't carry a tune. A moppet who also shot Eleanor Roosevelt with a slingshot. Cute kid.
Feedback? :-)

As a kid, I would watch her movies over and over again, never getting tired of the same old songs and storylines. I would think, "Wow, what a fun childhood." She really seemed to be having fun and I always loved the easy interaction between her and some of the older actors. A more innocent time. Thanks, Shirley.

Feedback? :-) Yep, we should remember the moppet grew up. I am sure you are right that there will be no mention of those tidbits in her obit. I remember my sisters and I loved to wear our hair in Shirley Temple curls.

Did you know that not all of her curls were real and the studio added curls to her hair?

When my mother passed away I inherited one of her prize possessions from childhood, a Shirley Temple doll. The two of them will always be linked together in my memory.

I would sit patiently while each lock was wound around the curling iron and then pulled into the right shape. I saw some clips of her movies on the news today and they reminded me of stuff I had forgotten.

I've never watched a Shirley Temple movie. I don't get those cable channels and was never willing to pay to rent videos. Though people do check out videos from the library. Though these days they are DVDs and I don't have that technology.
My father married a woman who looked like Shirley Temple Black. Also, the first time I met her I was shocked because she not only looked like my mother but like my father's sister.

I saw a few of her movies after I bought some VHS videos of hers at the local thrift store, she was indeed a cute actress as a child. She only acted a few times as a teen but never got full acceptance as a teen actor, I have one biography about her life and it has a few cute pictures in it and loads of good information it.
