It has been many years since I watched The Mechanical Universe I remember one episode when the professor was talking about light rays and matter, most people agree that matter is something that light can not penetrate but now we know that certain light rays can go through what we consider matter to be including ourselves, therefore nothing matters not even us. Very clever. The stars are matter, we are matter but it does not matter, as matter doesn't exists.

He says he is "assembled" or "arranged". I forget which.
Does that not imply someone did it?
And there he is in a cathedral again. Why, exactly, is he there?

I haven't seen this week's but last week's, which was fascinating, had a mistake in it that even a student shouldn't make.
And this was a respected professor.
An atom that loses an electron does not change the element that it is an atom of. It beomes an ion. Now when an atom loses a proton, it does change from one element to another.

If meteorites are a gift, does that not imply SOMEONE gave it?
I had heard creation started at 9 in the morning, but 6 P.M. would be around sunset, so the seventh day--the SABBATH, or day of rest--would start at 6 P.M. on Friday--that works.

That was a fascinating episode. The evil Big Oil vs. The Environment and the age of the planet. Who would have ever guessed these unrelated topics would be connected?
And he made another mistake. Christians have appropriated a number of pagan holidays, but they were not all Winter Solstice holidays. We only have one of those.

The Clean Room
I really enjoyed this episode which showed how the quest to discover the age of the earth led to discovering that the manufacture of some elements is harmful to people.
I remember when the alarm was sounded about lead poisoning. Neil Degrasse Tyson explained how lead works at the cellular level and the danger that occurs when it bonds with other cells. That is more helpful to me than just being told that lead is dangerous.
When I heard “mass spectrometer”, I immediately thought of Abby on NCIS because she is so proud of her mass spectrometer.
I am amazed that Clair Patterson used ice that was formed thousands of years ago to compare the amount of lead to the current levels. That was a tough, but brilliant, research endeavor. I admire his determination and willingness to devote his life to warning people about the danger in spite of the backlash. Scientist Kehoe deserves a thousand demerits.
I continue to enjoy the special effects which I view as some lighthearted fun – raising the arms to expand the rock layers and lowering the arms to cause them to contract.

And he made another mistake. Christians have appropriated a number of pagan holidays, but they were not all Winter Solstice holidays. We only have one of those. I do not think the statement “making it the latest in a long line of winter solstice holidays to be repurposed” is inaccurate. Many cultures' celebrations are "repurposed" from other cultures. Even though Dr. Tyson was talking about Saturnalia/Christmas, I think you might be looking at the above portion of the statement from a more narrow view than I interpreted it. He did not say “making it the latest in a long line of winter solstice holidays to be repurposed” [ by Christians].

Whatever. I wasn't aware there were others. But the New Age holidays are a more recent development. If they were included, Christmas was not "the latest".
One of the advice columnists had a letter from a Pagan who refuses to celebrate Christmas and doesn't want to join the holiday celebrations with her husband's family.
This week we had a woman whose contributions were largely ignored, but obviously they shouldn't have been. I have a small paperback book that has all those various categories of stars, but it didn't explain those categories quite this well.
I'm just about ready for this to end. I'm having trouble getting as excited about this show as I was.
I'm confused about Carl Sagan's contribution. He's listed as a writer, and yet I read this is supposed to be different from his show.

And once again, the man used a word that suggested someone PLANNED all this, and yet he refuses to acknowledge that such a thing happened. He dismisses any idea that such complex science had a designer as being equal to the Greek, Roman and Norse deities who we all know were just stories.

This is not a thread about religion which is just used to keep people in the dark and as a means to control them to vote against their best interests. The big bang theory doesn't need a reason to why it happen it just has to be able to prove that it did happen.

I keep thinking this show is over, because it sounds like the final comments are appropriate for the final episode. Then we see there will be another one.
Next week the Charlotte NASCAR race is on instead. Actually Concord, but who's counting?

I have watched the final two episodes, "The World Set Free" and "Unafraid of the Dark".
This is a wonderful series and I enjoyed all of it - Neil deGrasse Tyson's presentation, the graphics, the subject matter and the historical references.
I finally understand the Big Bang Theory and I now understand how global warming develops. I am amazed that we have the means to send a craft so far out in space past planets with hostile environments and the sun without it being destroyed.
The series credited Carl Sagan's contributions and ended with a quote from him. Well done.

I'm sorry it's over but they described it as a "season finale".
Anyone notice "MacFarlane Lard" on one of the recent episodes?

I do not recognize the name, so I did not notice it. I cannot even remember when we saw food products.

I do not recognize the name. I will look at a picture. MacFarlane Lard was the name of a company in one of those animated biographies. Seth MacFarlane (the creator and a voice on those Fox animated comedies) was a producer.

When "Supernatural" used Borax in one of its episodes, there was a mass buyout that emptied the stores' shelves although the product had not been popular in years.

On The CW, at an awards show last week, the show won for best reality show and Dr. Tyson was given an award for best reality host, though this took place "in ceremonies earlier". If he had been there I guess they would have shown him.

They mentioned he had won an award, but I did not know in what category.

ND Tyson was a good choice to host, but the show had two big problems, in the Spoonman's eyes.... 1. those cartoons really take you out of the original issue they're trying to tell 2. too much fawning over carl sagan. OK, we get it... he was the original host. Mention him in the FIRST or LAST episode. ya don't need to keep droppin' his name EVERY EPISODE!! and why wasn't Bill Nye given any screen time??? HE IS THE SCIENCE GUY!!!
