For all of us who loved Carl Sagan's 1980 PBS series Cosmos, there is good news! Beginning tonight, Fox (believe it or not) and the National Geographic channel begin a 13-episode continuation of the series, written in part by Sagan's wife, scientist Ann Druyan, and hosted by Prof. Neil Degrasse Tyson, astrophysicist and director of the Hayden Planetarium. They could not have picked a better person to carry the flag.
The first episode will air tonight at 9pm EDT in the United States on Fox, FX, FXX, FXM, Fox Sports 1, Fox Sports 2, National Geographic Channel, Nat Geo WILD, Nat Geo Mundo, and Fox Life. After tonight's airing it will be rebroadcast on Nat Geo Monday at 10 p.m. EDT with extra content.

I really want to see this but the time conflicts with The Walking Dead and with Resurrection, a new show that I want to watch. I'll see how I can manage all of them.

What we have learned about our amazing universe in the short 30 plus years from since the first airing of the ground breaking Cosmos series has been nothing short of astonishing.
I watched one episode of the old Cosmos series if does hold up well it is just that we have been able to answer the many questions that the first Cosmos asked and we have so many more questions that have yet to be answered the more we learn the less we seem to know.

The premiere of Cosmos earned a 2.1 adults 18-49 rating on FOX. NOTE: These are just the numbers on the Fox broadcast network and do not include the full 10-network simulcast. We will update with the full simulcast numbers shortly. UPDATE: Cosmos notched 8.5 million viewers last night across the 10 simulcasting networks. Among Adults 18-49, the simulcast earned a 2.9 rating.

Thanks for the numbers, 3Sheets! This was one of the most epic, stirring things I've seen on TV in a long, long, time, and I can't wait for the next episode. Everybody at work today who saw it last night was ecstatic and couldn't stop talking about it. Which was fine, because neither could I. If you missed episode #1 and want an easy way to see it, the full episode is up on the show's website here: www.fox.com/watch/183733315515

Mistermoonlight Thank you. I watched it and it was a wonderful experience. Science and Astronomy lessons would have been much more worthwhile if we had this media when I was in high school The video taught me about Bruno's Gospel of Infinity which is a doctrine I was unfamiliar with. Also, I was not familiar with the term rogue planets. I am looking forward to the next episode. As fate would have it, the series Resurrection is being moved to Sunday at 9 PM. Is fate conspiring to make it difficult for me to watch Cosmos?

Also, I was not familiar with the term rogue planets. I am looking forward to the next episode. As fate would have it, the series Resurrection is being moved to Sunday at 9 PM. Is fate conspiring to make it difficult for me to watch Cosmos? Well, the good news is that it's being offered on at least 10 different channels, so I'm betting there's a different time when you can watch or record the program. Or, you can catch it the next day on the website in stunning quality. Although I was well-versed in Ptolemy, Copernicus, and Gallileo, I too did not know the story of Giordano Bruno, who dared to posit that not only did our planet revolve around the sun, but that our sun itself was in a larger orbit along with many other stars in the cosmos. I had read about rogue planets, because I've always had a love of astronomy, physics, and cosmology, but had never seen the concept presented in the amazing clarity shown here. We've learned an amazing amount in the 34 years since the original Cosmos series back in 1980, and I am so thankful that it is back, not only because of what we can learn, but because of the amazing sense of wonder that discovery about our universe carries.

I admit I watched this twice…. I made it through half of it the first time and turned it off because it seemed aimed at teenagers or a high school science class. The cartoon burning of poor Giordano Bruno tipped me over the edge and I flipped to Turner Classic Movies.
But them my programmer colleagues were talking about it at lunch yesterday, really building it up…. and I watched it again. I enjoyed it. Wasn't an intellectual taxing show like Steven Hawking's "Brief History of Making Maze's Head Spin". Great effects… excellent host.

So, death by being burned at the stake is a proper penalty for those who dare question religious beliefs and insist upon a rational system of testing and experimentation to determine proof? I forgot what they actually did to him. Other than his death, he got what he deserved. Did you actually see the show?

It really did depict how difficult it was to intellectually "reach" beyond what was religiously accepted at the time. And the church held onto its beliefs like an iron fist. History proves that…
I didn't know Martin Luther was so vociferously against the idea of the earth NOT being at the center of the universe.
Man's corruption and ego were rampant…. same now as then. Amen.

I have to admit that I too was a little disappointed in the new cosmos as it was talking down to the audience compared to the old cosmos series which talked up to the audience and did make people think about our amazing universe not just on a 6th or 7th grade level of a science class. It did seem that a lot of what they were covering has already aired on PBS with very little new information.

Bruno got what he deserved. Although it is true the Earth revolves around the Sun, everything was created in six days, about 6000 years ago. Look it up. I hope that you made this post as some kind of bad joke as way too many people do think that dinosaurs and people roamed the earth at the same time. Too many people who would keep us in the dark about our universe who distrust all science from stem cell research, global warming as if weather is only local and not related to the world wide weather changing seasonal patterns are not man made or that we have any control about what we do to our planet has any long term affect on the earth as if god would stop us from our self destruction ways while waiting to be saved by some all powerful being in the sky to save only the true believers and leave the rest of us to suffer and burn in some sort of hell. Sorry didn't mean to go on a rant.

I had a scare last night. This didn't get taped. But I had taped it on the OTHER TiVo. I just had so much stuff to watch on the older one that I went there as soon as "Resurrection" was over. I haven't seen it yet. Neither have I. There was a major Walking Dead episode that I had to watch last night, as well as The Talking Dead afterwards, and tonight The Blacklist as well. But tomorrow I'll get a chance to watch it, as I have a day off. Will post here after I have.

I knew it would make people mad so I didn't say it, but I need to. These changes did not happen by chance. I thought the man was finally coming to his senses and saying there was, in fact, an intelligent designer. No, he actually thinks all these changes could have happened randomly. How could anyone believe that? The universe was made by a giant sneeze, we all should fear the giant tissue. Intelligent Design is used to try to put the myth of creation in our public schools science class it has lost every court battle. Religion proudly keeping people in the dark and afraid of the shadows.

It doesn't mean God doesn't exist…. it just means he's not Santa Claus.

Once again, the man hints that someone actually made it all happen, and once again, he denies any of this is true. Since science says this, the Bible must be wrong. Unbelievable. Evolution is a FACT? No one with any sense believes this. It cannot be proven. But Isaac Newton had a gift. How does someone receive a gift if there was no one to receive it from? Science and religion's do not have to agree but science does have to be based on facts and religions are faith based and are not based on facts. Religion has no place in discussing scientific discoveries or theories, science has no place in Sunday school. If you choose to be kept in the dark about the universe or take issue with the facts than bring up any argument with facts not faith of your religion as they are TWO very things with nothing in common. Newton'a gift was he thought things through and was willing to fight for his beliefs even when the almighty church held the power of limiting all knowledge.

I was reading earlier this week that most scientists don't accept evolution as fact. Where did you read this in some religious magazine or in a scientific magazine? As I have stated many times that the theory of evolution and the belief of creation are two very separated things one belongs in the school class room and the other belongs in Sunday school. The theory of evolution has been under attack since the very first publication of the theory and has stood the test of time for over 160 years most people who oppose the theory of evolution don't seem to understand the different meaning of the word theory when the word is used in the science fact base world and when the word is used in other contents.

Other religious creationist myths In Hindu philosophy, the existence of the universe is governed by the Trimurti of Brahma (the Creator), Vishnu (the Sustainer) and Shiva (the Destroyer). The sequence of Avatars of Vishnu- the Dasavatara (Sanskrit: Dasa-ten, Avatara-incarnation) is generally accepted by most Hindus today as correlating well with Darwin's theory of evolution, the first Avatar generating from the environment of water. Hindus thus do not see much conflict between creation and evolution. An additional reason for this could also be the Hindu concept of cyclic time, such as yugas, or days of Brahma in approximately 4.3 billion year cycles (unlike the concept of linear time in many other religions). In fact, time is represented as Kaala Chakra - the Wheel of Time. (alchemy wheel) In Hinduism, nature and all of God's creations are manifestations of Him. He is within and without his creations, pervading the entire universe and also observing it externally. Hence all animals and humans have a divine element in them that is covered by the ignorance and illusions of material or profane existence. In earlier Vedic thinking, the universe was created by Hiranyagarbha (here interpreted as 'the golden embryo') or by Prajapati who was born from the Hiranyagarbha (here interpreted as 'the golden womb'). Prajapati was later identified with the puranic Brahma. Other gods are credited with acts of creation, primarily the act of propping apart the sky and the Earth - gods who are said to have done this include Indra, Varuna and Vishnu. Another myth which began in late Rig-Vedic times with the Purusha Sukta hymn was the story of the creation of the universe from the remains of the primaeval cosmic male Purusha, who had sacrificed himself or been sacrificed by other primaeval beings (not the most popular Vedic gods because they were said to have been born from Purusha after the sacrifice) at the Purushamedha yajna. According to Hindu creation happened gradually. The universe in primitive form was made up of Ishwat Tattva, the Ishwar Tattva primarily spread homogeniously throughout the universe. Sar veshaktiman and Sarvevyapak, were some other names ofIshwar Tattva. Purusha and Prakriti identifies as energy and matter, mixing of these two in different ratios resulted in Sattva, Rajas and Tamas. Sattva having great amount of energy and little matter, Tamas having less energy and big matter, Rajas being in between, are basic building blocks of our Universe. Presently they can be interpreted as Electron, Proton and Neutron. These three basic Gunas in different ratio made five elements, named as Ether, Air, Fire, Water and Earth. These five elements present in the universe can be observed directly by our Ten Indriyas, five Gyanendriyans and five Karmendriyans. Confucianism Three rivers of thought and practice flow into making traditional Chinese belief. These are Taoism, based on the teachings of the book 'Tao Te Ching, Confucianism, springing from th ethics of K'ung Fu tzu, and Buddhism, which first appeared in China during the 1st century CE. All three speak of the yin and yang, the dark and the light, as being the creative power, which sustains all life and being. Yin and yang are not to be seen as gods or deities in any sense. They are the natural forces behind nature and even the gods, such as P'an Ku, are creations of the yin and yang. 'Let it be told of a time when there was nothing but chaos, and that chaos was like a mist and full of emptiness. Suddenly, into the midst of this mist came a great colourful light and from this light all things that exist came to be. The mist shook and separated, that which was light rose up to form heaven and that which was heavy sank. Became solid and formed the earth. Now from heaven and earth came forth strong forces and these two forces combined to produce yin and yang. Picture this yang like a dragon - hot, fiery, male, full of energy. Imagine this yin as a cloud - moist, cool, female, drifting slowly. Each of these forces is full of great power. Left alone they would destroy the world with their might and chaos would return. Together they balance each other and keep the world in harmony. This then is yin and yang and from them came forth everything. The sun is of yang and the moon, yin. The four seasons - winter, spring, summer and autumn - and the five elements - water, earth, metal, fire and wood - sprang from them, So did all kinds of living creatures. So there was the earth, floating like a jellyfish on water. But the earth was just a ball without features. Then the forces of yin and yang created the giant figure P'an Ku, the Ancient One. P'an Ku, who never stopped growing every year of his great long life, set to work to put the earth in order. He dug the river valleys and piled up the mountains. Over many thousands of years he shaped and created the flow and folds of our earth. But such work tool its toll. Even mighty P'an Ku could not escape death and, worn out by his struggle, he collapsed and died. His body was so vast that when he fell to the ground his body became the five sacred mountains, his hair the plants and his blood the rivers. From his sweat came the rain and from the parasites living on his body came forth human beings. The people at first lived in caves but soon Heavenly Emperors came to teach them how to make tools and houses. The people also learnt how to build boats, to fish, to plough and plant, and to prepare food. This is how it all began.' The belief in the balancing forces of yin and yang lies at the heart of the Chinese philosophy and influences the way the Chinese people treat their environment. They see the earth as a living being which must be cared for properly, kept in order, so that the powerful forces of yin and yang are kept in balance. Ancient Rome Just like its Greek counterpart, the Roman creation myth portrays the world before creation as unshaped matter, or chaos that was characterized by inharmonious co-existence of opposites. A naturally higher force, God, put a stop to this conflicting state by separating all the natural forces and organizing them into harmonious whole. God also shaped planet Earth by rolling the matter into a ball. This creation myth was reflected later in Platonic philosophy, which also spoke about creation of the world as separation of the opposites and creating harmony. Creation of a Man There are two variances on the creation of a human being. One version depicts God creating a human being out of a Divine seed. Another story says that Prometheus sculpted a man out of the clump of earth to resemble gods. Since the earth still contained some divine qualities, so did the humans. And so human beings differed from other creatures by walking in the erect position and facing the heavens, rather then having their gaze directed at the ground like the rest of the creatures. Norse creationist Muspell The first world to exist was Muspell, a place of light and heat whose flames are so hot that those who are not native to that land cannot endure it. Surt sits at Muspell's border, guarding the land with a flaming sword. At the end of the world he will vanquish all the gods and burn the whole world with fire. Ginnungagap and Niflheim Beyond Muspell lay the great and yawning void named Ginnungagap, and beyond Ginnungagap lay the dark, cold realm of Niflheim. Ice, frost, wind, rain and heavy cold emanated from Niflheim, meeting in Ginnungagap the soft air, heat, light, and soft air from Muspell. Ymir Where heat and cold met appeared thawing drops, and this running fluid grew into a giant frost ogre named Ymir. Frost ogres Ymir slept, falling into a sweat. Under his left arm there grew a man and a woman. And one of his legs begot a son with the other. This was the beginning of the frost ogres. Audhumla Thawing frost then became a cow called Audhumla. Four rivers of milk ran from her teats, and she fed Ymir. Buri, Bor, and Bestla The cow licked salty ice blocks. After one day of licking, she freed a man's hair from the ice. After two days, his head appeared. On the third day the whole man was there. His name was Buri, and he was tall, strong, and handsome. Buri begot a son named Bor, and Bor married Bestla, the daughter of a giant. Odin, Vili, and Vé Bor and Bestla had three sons: Odin was the first, Vili the second, and Vé the third. It is believed that Odin, in association with his brothers, is the ruler of heaven and earth. He is the greatest and most famous of all men. The death of Ymir Odin, Vili, and Vé killed the giant Ymir. When Ymir fell, there issued from his wounds such a flood of blood, that all the frost ogres were drowned, except for the giant Bergelmir who escaped with his wife by climbing onto a lur . From them spring the families of frost ogres.
Earth, trees, and mountains The sons of Bor then carried Ymir to the middle of Ginnungagap and made the world from him. From his blood they made the sea and the lakes; from his flesh the earth; from his hair the trees; and from his bones the mountains. They made rocks and pebbles from his teeth and jaws and those bones that were broken

Genesis 1 (King James Version)
1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.
7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.
8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.
9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.
10 And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.
11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.
12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
13 And the evening and the morning were the third day.
14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:
15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.
16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.
17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,
18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.
19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.
20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.
21 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
22 And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.
23 And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.
24 And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.
25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.
31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
That's the whole story. Now I have lots of work to do before the big day. I'm so excited! If you'd like to make this thread, which is a discussion about the new TV series Cosmos into a debate about creationism VS science (or more clearly fundamentalist political ideology VS science) I'll ask you to take the initiative and create a separate thread for that. This one is for rationally discussing the television series. If you want to troll this thread, I'd suggest instead, that you create a more targeted one for whatever magical beliefs you hope to convey.

I gave up on Cosmos…. it's like a kid's show. However I am embarrassed to admit that I watched the 1970s TV series Land of The Lost on Saturday morning…. they re-run the old shows here in Chicago. If only for the opening theme, that show is brilliant.

Don't knock cartoons some were made knowing that the parents had to watch the toons with their kids and they wrote the script that would appeal to both the child and the adult in mind. Cosmos up-dated was a good idea this show is a shadow of the original show which was brilliant. well thought out, didn't talk down to the audience and is still very reinvent today. Most of the new Cosmos is just rehashing of the old show with not much new science thrown in the mix, disappointing to say the least.

Why am I seeing a giant web board for Selena Gomez at the top of my screen? But the Kodak kitty picture deal seems pretty cool…. 3sheets, I also like "I Love Lucy" and…. ahem (waiting for Aeryn to start the joke brigade).."Leave it to Beaver" ….. both fantastic time capsule shows.
