You will recognize his voice right away in this video promoting Jerry Seinfeld's movie 'Comedians':
He was 89.
Yes, he was the one who did all of those movie trailers that began, "In a world . . ."
But let me tell you a little more about both him and me. For all of my life voices have called to me. First on the AM radio dial in the mid-sixties. All of those wonderful voices in the night. Each listener had a different vision of what that person looked like. It was theater of the mind.
It doesn't surprise me to see that Hal started in radio (in the 1950s) and later moved into voiceover work, for that is part of my story, too. I was a couple of generations after him, starting in radio in the mid-70s and doing most of my voiceover work in the 80s and 90s.
People like Hal were gods to us. We learned from his technique, although few of us had that amazing voice. We worked with what we had. We learned about being real and finding that space within where you spoke the truth in the lines you were given.
There are thousands, perhaps millions, of people he inspired, of which I am only one. I can only say for myself the thank-you he deserves for the inspiration I inhaled from his work. And he probably never knew on what scale he was paying it forward.
Thank you, Hal.
Thank you.
You were on a level beyond us all.
I liked it in there, too.
