When I was a kid, during the 60s and 70s, a local TV station had a live 30-minute music show that aired early each weekday morning. It was called "Alabama Jubilee."
Raised on the Beatles and rock and roll, my friends and I made fun of it, yet we watched it all: Porter Wagner's TV Show, Jim and Jesse, Johnny Cash, you name it. Years later to our eternal surprise, we found this music had made its way into our souls.
Right now there are many hard-hearted people who seem willing to use the culture of the South to gain power and to hurt others. So I got the idea for this this thread, hoping to combat the forces who would drive us apart.
What are the songs that made you who you are? The ones that still speak to you today?
Post them here, and if you would, tell us a little about why they are important to you. You can't hijack culture to drive people apart when they share who they are, and celebrate one another.
This song charts the history of the journey of the United States, through the Civil War and right up to the promise of the Civil Rights era:
One thing they can't kill is a dream.
"Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other." -- President John F. Kennedy
Is there a song that remembers when for you?

In the late 90's early 2000's I was looking for something to help me get away. That is when a friend of mine introduced me to hard rock music. Some of the first songs I heard from the genre really helped get away. Since then music has been one of the things I can ALWAYS fall back on whenever I am in a down mood.
The first song I heard, that is still my favorite song today, will be ingrained in my memory forever. From the start of the bass riff to the fade at the end, I will remember this song forever. It has helped change my life for the better.
The second song that really got me going into this genre of music and spiraled my music taste to new, more exotic and definitely unpopular heights, was from a band that to this day is still one of my absolute favorites of all time.
Music is one of those things that I can always rely on. It is truly my savior.

The word "jubilee" makes me think of Southern gospel quartets, which is why I was surprised Mistermoonlight used it.
