well, it looks like the boys and, gulp, Charley, are going to do some serious work relating to Dean's MoC issues. Just what is the book of the damned? Does it really contain information useful to the removal of the mark? The title isn't too comforting. What has Charley been up to since we last saw her? Watch, rate and discuss.

I am giving it a 4 because I really enjoyed the episode.
Dean looked happy and it did not seem fake to me. Maybe a ray of hope was all he needed and he now believes there is a way and all they need to do is find it.
Does anyone have a theory about why Dean’s eyes flashed black in the previous episode? The Book of the Damned kept calling to the mark and it seems that Dean could hear it communicating with him. He appeared mesmerized, but he realized what was happening and demanded the book be destroyed. I understand Sam not wanting Dean to go to the dark side, but keeping the book after Dean told him what it was doing to him was a bad idea. Also, I cannot come up with a logical reason for Sam to ask for Rowena’s help after Dean told him that witch tried to kill him. She would love to get her hands on that evil book because she is also evil. That will not turn out well, I am sure.
It was difficult for me to keep all of the lies straight when Sam and Cas were talking to Dean and Charlie. They could not even be truthful about how Cas retrieved his grace. I have a feeling that Dean and Hannah will bump into each other and she will say she did not have anything to do with Cas’ grace and Dean will know they were lying to him.
I especially liked Castiel punching Metatron. When Cas followed Metatron into the restroom, I relaxed because I thought he would not fall for any of Metatron’s tricks, but, alas, he removed the handcuffs. That was a terrible spell Metatron cast to cause Cas so much pain, and I am not happy that he got away, especially with the demon tablet.
I loved the special effects of Castiel’s grace being restored…finally! But his wings seemed a little skimpy. Shouldn’t they be fuller than that? But Cas was strong enough to restore Charlie to perfect health and that was nice.

I enjoyed this episode immensely. Even Charley didn't mess it up. I ws surprised she was able to get away from those bad Stein family boys since she is so little and they were so big, and as we saw, able to endure multiple gunshots!
It was nice to see Dean happy while he was in the car with Sam. To see them both smiling at each other was something we haven't seen often since Kripke left the franchise. Unfortunately, it wouldn't last long.
How was one of Bobby's old hangouts able to mask the book from the Stein "magic compass?" I sure hope Dean and Sam find that before they bury those guys. I'm sure it will come in handy.
So, we have another new set of characters tossed in the mix: the Steins. Who are they and how will that family that "will never stop searching for the Book" figure into the rest of the season?
I also wish Cas had just killed Metatron, but I did enjoy watching Cas beat him up a little. How was a human Metatron able to cast whatever that spell was that incapacitated Cas and what kind of spell inccpacitates an ANGEL? What can a human Metatron do with the demon tablet? As the scribe of God, can he read it now that he is human? And (biggest flaw of the episode) why wasn't Castiel (after he was restored) not able to smite Metatron instantly, or bring him back to the library? Aren't soldier angels that strong? We certainly saw that type of strength with Cas and Uriel in season 4. Remember?
I really liked the initial scenes of Dean being mesmerized by the Book. How was he able to resist it? How is he able to control what the MoC wants him to do? Dean and Sam staring at each other creeped me out. It seems as though Sam knows that MoC Dean will try to kill him. And Dean probably keeps hearing what Cain said to him about that same thing.
Why did Sam not destroy the Book? It reminded me of the episode where Dean told Sam to destroy the painting and Sam didn't and found a way to use it to wipe out the ghost nun. But the Book? Dean tells Sam he can feel it calling to him. Why couldn't he feel it after Sam pretended to destroy it? How did Sam ride in the same car with Dean back to the MoL bunker with the Book and have Dean not feel it (not that we were shown that part, it's just my thinking of how they left the "Bobby Safe House" and got back to the bunker)?
Did anyone else find it strange that Dean and Sam did nothing to help Charley with her gunshot wound? I found that completely strange. I would have thought the first thing they would do upon finding her passed out at a table would be to get her to bed and at least patch her up a little bit. She seemed awfully chipper as she and Sam talked about getting their geek on in order to translate the Book.
Why, oh why, did they bring Rowena back into the mix? How did Sam find her and why would he ask her to help with more translation in order to help Dean when Dean told him Rowena had tried to kill him? Surely Sam won't give her the Book if she helps him, will he? Did Sam and Castiel discuss this? Was Dean's hearty laughter at the dinner table all an act?
Argh.....so many questions!! Just shows how much I loved the episode.

SoCal Really enjoyed your review. The episode had a lot to process. The lead-lined box kept the book hidden and Sam retained the book in it. That is why Dean was not aware of it. The Steins were interesting and rather fearless. The Winchesters should take a page out of TWD book and go for head shots. I wondered about that too. Dental floss must be awesome. I think Charlie’s quick recovery and her escape from the Steins might be a writing error, but most likely an editing error, because neither was logical. I re-watched all of S4 while waiting for this episode. I agree that Cas should have been able to stop Metatron, but someone wants Metatron around, darn it.

But if the Book was in a lead-lined box, how were the Steins able to trace Charley? How did they know she had been at the little road side store?

Sam and Dean brought the box from the MoL bunker because they thought the warding on the box would shield the book and they were right. Stein was able to trace Charlie and the book to the spot where she was picked up, but then the book was placed in the box.

On my first viewing, I thought it was a little slow starting out, but as the episode progressed it got more interesting and I really liked it and gave it a 4. There were so many good moments in this and it is hard to pick them all out but I will pick a few. Cas and Metatron -I laughed at Cas rolling his eyes at Metatron and wanting him to just shut up. Metatron in the car saying "you know I can hear you" The banter between them is good and they have a nice rapport, even though it vexes Cas to no end that Metatron exists. I have always loved BA Cas and was happy to see him back and not just that but he got his Grace BACK!! Finally, it has been a long time coming and I am glad that has been resolved. I did think it was interesting to see Metatron draw the sigil and not just an ordinary one , but a really bad one that can kill Cas, at least he was strong enough, or determined enough to fight to save himself. I was sorry to see Metatron get away with the demon tablet (that won't end well) but I am betting it plays into something towards the end of the season. Charlie is ok, I don't have a strong reaction to her, but it was funny to see her reaction to Cas, and it is good to see her fighting so hard to help Dean and Sam. Dean and Sam had an interesting dynamic this time, I am happy to see Sam pushing back against his brother more than he did at the beginning of the season, I am glad that he fights so hard to save his brother. It was nice to see him tell Dean and Charlie was he thinks, he has had too many times where he doesn't say anything, and I am glad he is not letting Dean control everything. Even though I was sad to see him with Rowena at the end of the episode, it kind of makes sense for him to do it. I will explain that at the end of my review. Dean-I loved seeing BA Dean in the gas station, (that man just smolders onscreen) and he outsmarted the Stein family and got away , well for a little bit. I liked seeing Dean recognize that he needed to stay away from the book and he was willing to sacrifice himself to destroy the book so that no one else would use it. Now to explain myself- I think in watching this show over the years it has become clear that Dean and Sam love each other and will do anything to save each other, Neither one wants to live without the other one and have went over and above multiple times to save each other so the other one can live, they have sold their souls, and lied to one another, and lied to their friends, and talked one another out of making the final sacrifice for the greater good. That is what they are willing to do for each other, but when it comes to themselves they are willing to pay the price, their lives don't matter to themselves, it is only the other brother's life that matters. They are willing to lie, deceive, and make bad deals in order to save each other, no matter the cost or the outcome of these deals they are willing to go to the end of the earth to save each other. You know the old saying desperate times call for desperate measures, well now it is Sam's turn to do what he thinks will help save Dean. In the end and at the core of this show, and I think maybe even more this season, it is about family and love.

I also loved this episode. I was initially worried about another road trip with Cas but this one was great with a perfect (well almost perfect Metatron got away with the demon tablet....booo) payoff for Cas. That was a great shout out to Anna's grace being restored. Evidently having your own grace restored causes quite the explosion. Dean seemed to be handling the Mark well in this episode until the book showed up. I wonder how he was able to put it down. Oh Sam what are you doing? Didn't you listen? The book is bad, biblically bad. Charlie was just about right for the ep. Her role was to get and deliver the book to the brothers and be a sounding board for Sam. I love the new threat to the Winchesters in the Styne's. They seem like the Magnus' of the season. I gave this episode an A or a 5.

Hi Cheryl, I am glad you decided to post, we need some more SPN fans here. I have to admit I liked Jacob Styne, he was scary creepy and he was so good, I would like to see him come back. Poor Sam and Dean, these guys need a hug.

But if the Book was in a lead-lined box, how were the Steins able to trace Charley? How did they know she had been at the little road side store? That was before they put it in the box. I'm guessing there was video footage but idk for sure.
