Also, polymers are so much cheaper and available these days that you can cast a mold around a clay sculpture, dig out the clay, then make copies of what you sculpted in some kind of plastic. Similar methods would allow you to make face masks. Still, there is a learning curve and time is your enemy. The latest is creating 3-d models in a computer and having a 3-d print made ... or sculpting as you normally would and have the sculpture scanned and then printed. Interesting ideas I have no idea how to do. But I will have to learn. Not having to fire and cheaper materials would be awesome.

Say, I remember us talking back in the CWL about clay techniques...would you consider trying Jared again, but this time using the method of newspaper for the frame to build around? It is tons lighter, and with the basic shape quickly taken care of, you would still have plenty of time left to concentrate on the details. Just ball up a big wad of newspaper to the approximate shape of a head, tape it all together, then secure the shape and refine it by way of layering over with paper mache. Then roll out your long strips of clay, and mold them around the paper head. Doesn't take much time at all, that part of it. This leaves you with more time to concentrate on the important details of the features themselves. And there's no need to do anything to the paper inside, it will all burn out in the firing. Just set the head on those ceramic sticks so air can get underneath. I know you might just want to call it a day and not try again, but if you do want to attempt a second go at it, then maybe try this approach? It's the method my mom used for generations of sculpture students in her classroom, so it's well-tested for ease of use and relative speed in execution. I think right now time if short to finish Fake Dean and start a new fake sammy. I was thinking add a base to fake Dean using a dark brown under glaze and using Sgraffito for different show quotes, latin sayings, motel rooms that kind of thing.

Too funny!!! Do you have a degree in BS? Because I sure sounds that way. What grade did you get? Close! BFA. I went the Fine Arts route because there were fewer non-art classes in the reqs. However, there was an unfortunate amount of Art History...and when I hear my mom tell of her Art History options from when she went to Univ of Michigan (late '50s) SHE had a wealth of interesting choices. I got stuff like "History of Modern Art" by Prof Charles Charles. "You can call me Charles, you can call me Charles, you can call me Charles Charles, you can call me Professor Charles, or you can call me Eagle Feather, my Indian name from when I spent a sabbatical with the _ tribe." Every work he showed us was either "circle" or "square" ...and a particular piece could change its essence from the beginning to the end of the hour, depending on his mood, the fact that he forgot how he first labeled it, or if a student could present a persuasive argument to the contrary. So imagine getting tested like that: shown a long slideshow of examples of modern art, like a mostly blank canvas except for one little red splotch, or a toilet made out of silly putty, and having to decide whether it is "circle" or "square." "History of the Italian Renaissance" was worse: that final exam consisted of about a hundred slides where we had to identify title, year and artist...and most of them were Madonna and Child works. You've seen one Madonna and Child, you've seen a thousand....*barf* I remember distinctly that I got an A- on the tea-illustration. Mostly because I must have been creatively impressive enough with my approach to overcoming disaster.

Interesting ideas I have no idea how to do. But I will have to learn. Not having to fire and cheaper materials would be awesome. I was reading about a 3D modeler around 10 years ago when I was working for a military contractor, and our office had a lot of engineers using CAD and stuff for Navy equipment design. Back then at least, the good ones cost thousands of dollars, but so awesome! Being able to create a gear or whatever, and not have to machine it to create a working model from the CAD design. So much time and money saved.... Squirrel, if you are good at 3D sculpture, you will take to 3D computer design like a duck to water. You will pick it up much faster than someone without that experience. I was able to puzzle out how to do this curving, spherical-but-wrapped shape when creating a multi-use surveillance camera that goes under the belly of a P-3 because of my experience with actual physical sculpture art. You know what was most fun about creating that camera? I could blow it up in 3D Max. Big fireballs! Over and over.

This is the final Dean and his Base. I took Anticat's advice and used newspaper to shape base. What a time saver and great idea. Hopefully I can get fake Dean off the structure and onto the base without him going the way of fake Sammy. I signed him anyway. I just need Dean to get hard before I can get him off. Wow okay the sentence sounded dirty. Re phase: I need the clay to get to a leather hard state before I can remove the sculpture from the structure I built him on. You can see my reference photo in the background. The base

I was just trying to describe treating the words and phrases like a design element, bunching them together and curving them around each other, making a pattern. Sort of like how some tattoos treat words, or graffiti on a wall, if you know what I mean. The way the words and letters are shaped are like little designs in themselves. Maybe write a couple words vertical aligned, with the tops pointing to the left, and the next two normal aligned, but stacked on top of each other, and repeat the series like this: ll=ll=ll=ll So you sort of get a pattern going around the neck/base, but it really can be any interlocking grouping that can make an interesting design.

Still sad you lost fake Sam, but love him as your avatar!

Aw no Squirrel You tell Jared when you see him, that he was going to look amazing as your bust! And show him pictures, he'll love it still! If Jensen teases him, a wrist slap is well deserved. Hey maybe I will have Jared sign a picture of the piece at the Con. Then I would have a unique autograph. Plus he would have seen the piece. Now that is looking at the silver lining! I am sure he would do that if you told him the fate of Busty Sam!

Just in case anyone is interested, Daz is giving away free downloads of their 3D products this month. I've never used Daz Studio Pro or Hexagon, but I have heard of/knew people who use Bryce. So if you just want to play around with 3D but don't want to spend the money for Max or Maya, then now is the time! Free is an excellent price. www.daz3d.com/

Oh man! I'm so sorry. That sucks! The sideburns did it. I blame them. Are you gonna try again?
Dean's coming along nicely. Glad you added the lines around the eyes. Those are adorable.

He does make a cute avatar:-) I'm bummed I screwed up the removal of fake Sammy' but I'm happy with how well he turned out better then I expected. 10 years between busts is a long time to remember what you are doing. Pretty good for a business major.

I got fake Dean off!!!!! Yeah. I also performed a frontal lobotomy and removed a lot of gray matter. I tried to put him on the base me I had issues with his neck. Then my brilliant hubby came up with a great idea I will be doing instead of the base with the sgraffito. For now I'm going to keep that to myself. Once it's fired and not in danger anymore I will hopefully be able to share a final product. I do have some clean up work on Fake Dean. But I'm glad he made it off the structure.

I flew back from Los Angeles today. When I checked fake Dean he was dry. YEAH! My hubby and I drove up to the place to have him fired. They will try and fire him on Monday. Fingers crossed the I did everything right and he comes out of the kiln in one piece. If he does I promise photos of the final product.

I'm not so sure you'll keep disappointing us Evil Gosh, I like your busts. How much time did they take?? Oh oh I can answer this because I took pictures from the start of the process. My first picture was taken 11/7/11 and it will be fired 02/27/12 so that is about 3 and half months. To be fair I didn't work on it everyday. But my sessions were about 2 hours each maybe once or twice a week on average. My last bust was in college about 13 years ago so I was a bit rusty. This is why Fake Sammy didn't make it. They went through some strange phases. This will be funny. Sam before Sam after Dean Before Dean After

I pick him up tomorrow so that will be when I found out if he made it through the fire. If he did I have my center piece. ;D If not I only have the memories. Wish me luck.

So Dean made it out of the fire. I think that's what Sam was thinking at the beginning of season 4. I'm glad he made it and as a bonus you can put whatever you what in his head. I have some suggestions if you need ideas .
