Okay long story short I'm working on a bust of Sam and Dean hoping to use for centerpiece contest at SPN Con in LA. Sammy's coming along pretty good. Dean is a hot mess. I worked on Dean over 2 hours today and no joy. The lips are lopsided and horrible the eyes are all wrong and he looks more like Tiger Woods then Dean. What's up with that!!! Damn Tiger Woods!!! Here are the current pictures. Oh BTW my first time even doing an ear. I'm pleased with the results only thing I did today that I like. Click the pictures to see them full size. Sam Dean/Tiger BTW he looks really odd because of the one ear. My first attempt at an ear. I think that looks pretty look.

It is really impressive that you have undertaken a task such as this! I recall that you were working on this project for quite some time even while we were over at the "other place"! That is a lot of dedication, and it's looking really good! Keep us posted!

I got updated Dean pictures. Special thanks to my hubby for not only telling me what was wrong with the eyes but now to fix it. He has a shape eye. He cracks me up to. Before my most recent changes he said it looked like George Takei he was right it did. New eyes I may redo the left eye, but I'm happy with the right one. See much closer New Face Something is still off in the profile maybe I need much forhead?

I look at the older pictures and it's scary how Dean use to look. He still seems off to me some how. Maybe the eyes, cheek bones, or it's the forehead I'm not sure. I will have to stare at pictures of Jensen. Man my life is hard. Hair will help, once I get to that part. But the forehead, the eyes and the chin need to be right before I add hair. Hair for me is the fun part.

I wished he looked more Dean, but hey he looks male and now he has hair. Pretty look for only my third bust and first time trying to make it look like someone. Still a work in progress. I notice one cheek is to full and the hairline need to come down a bit lower on his forehead. I'm happy with the lips. However, my head on photos came out blurry. This is why my hubby takes the pictures and I play in the clay. See blurry!! His good side This is the cheek I need to thin a bit looks like his allergic to a bee sting.

I have always been good with my hands. Just ask my hubby. ;D I will fix Dean's hairline and cheek tonight. I'm also hoping to add shoulders. Need to get them dried out soon if I have any hope of making the Burbank Con for the centerpiece contest. This part coming up is the scary part. I will cut them in half and scoop out their heads so no wider then 1/2 inch. Then they have to dry out completely before they are fired. Once they dry out will be very delicate and can break easily. This part makes me nervous. Also if any air bubbles or wetness remains it will create steam in the piece and cause it to break apart while fired. If I can get a good first firing on the piece I'm golden. If not at least I have the photos of the project.

Aw no Squirrel You tell Jared when you see him, that he was going to look amazing as your bust! And show him pictures, he'll love it still! If Jensen teases him, a wrist slap is well deserved.

By the way I hope you will finish it eventually even if it doesn't make the Con, would love to see the end result. Not knowing how much work you put into it, that's very easy for me to sit here and wish for of course!

*hugs* awww Squirrel...very sorry to hear about fake-Jared's demise. I know exactly how difficult it is to put heart and soul into a creative work, only to have it get ruined in one way or another. Clay is simultaneously a forgiving and unforgiving medium. I once had almost completely finished an elaborate pencil rendering of a building for a college Illustration class, hours of work and due at 9am in the morning. I set down my pencils, reached for my glass of iced tea...and accidentally spilled it across half the page. My fault for having placed it on a canted drafting table...*mad at self* Horrified and panicked doesn't begin to cover what I was feeling! Cold-press illustration board is pricey too...and I even though I had another sheet I didn't have the time to re-create the art. So I threw a Hail Mary...and dumped the remaining tea over the rest of the sheet. Then took a paintbrush and added more tea...sort of creating a sepia-tone watercolor wash effect, with layers of brown color. I didn't know my professor's eyebrows could go up that high on his head! I explained the unusual pencil drawing assignment as getting a late night artistic inspiration, and wanting to try enhancing the sense of the old building's essence with the sepia-tone. Absolute truth....minus the detail that the inspiration was only because of a Lipton disaster.

Say, I remember us talking back in the CWL about clay techniques...would you consider trying Jared again, but this time using the method of newspaper for the frame to build around? It is tons lighter, and with the basic shape quickly taken care of, you would still have plenty of time left to concentrate on the details. Just ball up a big wad of newspaper to the approximate shape of a head, tape it all together, then secure the shape and refine it by way of layering over with paper mache. Then roll out your long strips of clay, and mold them around the paper head. Doesn't take much time at all, that part of it. This leaves you with more time to concentrate on the important details of the features themselves. And there's no need to do anything to the paper inside, it will all burn out in the firing. Just set the head on those ceramic sticks so air can get underneath. I know you might just want to call it a day and not try again, but if you do want to attempt a second go at it, then maybe try this approach? It's the method my mom used for generations of sculpture students in her classroom, so it's well-tested for ease of use and relative speed in execution.

Also, polymers are so much cheaper and available these days that you can cast a mold around a clay sculpture, dig out the clay, then make copies of what you sculpted in some kind of plastic. Similar methods would allow you to make face masks. Still, there is a learning curve and time is your enemy.
The latest is creating 3-d models in a computer and having a 3-d print made ... or sculpting as you normally would and have the sculpture scanned and then printed.

It was stupid the way I tried to remove fake Sammy hopefully this video will save fake Dean.

Hey maybe I will have Jared sign a picture of the piece at the Con. Then I would have a unique autograph. Plus he would have seen the piece.
