So, I'm probably way late on this, but I finally finished watching the SPN anime. Much like S6, it was a lot better as it went on.
I'm not really a fan of anime, and dislike the whole "my eyeballs are wobbly because I'm having an emotion" style of emotional connection, but I learned to accept that a lot of the changes were because of very different cultural expectations of the Japanese audience. Although Bobby in a helicopter was a real "WTF?" moment. LOL!
As much as I'd enjoyed Ellen's character, Missouri was a fine substitute at the end, and taking out all that Roadhouse sidetrack didn't detract at all- in fact, I was glad to not see Ash, one of my least fave characters.
Amazingly enough, despite the complete lack of emotions in the first episodes, (and the general lack of same in just about any anime) the second half was filling with weeping Dean, Dark and Powerful Sam, and lots of tearful hugs between the brothers. Wonderful stuff!
I LOVED the episode based on the comic books, where Dad takes Dean out on his First Big Hunt, and it turns out that Sam splats the buck right in front of Dean, but he "doesn't know how", and John starts to doubt that Sam might actually be evil.
I reallly liked the episodes that were based on Japanese legends, especiallly "The Thing in the Lake"- that had some nice research to it.
As far as Sam goes- I was amazed that they went so much more Dark and Powerful with him. The way that Jake's family was scared of him, the explosion of the buck, the way he basically turned Jake inside out with his fists, not to mention the gore of when Jake put his fist thru Sam's spine. I think if the live action show had been more honest and direct about Sam going darkside, it wouldn't have felt like such a betrayal by Kripke- but then again I probably wouldn't have been so invested in Sam as a character.
It's interesting to see it as sort of an alternate universe though. For the first time, I'm actually hoping to see more of it. I have a feeling, with what they have done already, that they won't bother introducing a Ruby character (or Bella for that matter) and Sam will go darkside on his own, just from his brother going to hell. In fact, I bet they go with the alledged original scenario before the writer's strike- Sam developing his powers enough to get Dean out of hell on his own.
Have we heard if there will be more anime?
