This was an excellent introduction to the Wayward Sisters, and I give it high marks for plot, drama, excitement, humor and an unexpected ending. Adding a psychic and mortician to the team gave them access to skills most hunters do not have.
Claire’s fight with the werewolves at the beginning showed Jody was right about her rushing headlong into situations. I admire Claire’s confidence and skill, but she was reckless.
In spite of Claire jibbing Alex about wearing a uniform and having a job, Alex was at the right place to help them locate Ka. Alex hit Claire with a good one when she said Claire looked like Biker Barbie.
Ka had no intention of going anywhere with Claire, but the monster stopped her from leaving. Claire went into action and I am not saying Claire could not handle the situation at the hospital, but I was glad Jody showed up. When Claire stuck a knife into the monster, I thought “Ah, the monsters are the real “blue bloods”.
The autopsy on the monster was stomach churning, but Alex did not flinch. I guess learning her fiancé was a monster has prepared her for anything.
I liked it when Claire and Ka exchanged stories about how they got their scars. That was unusual girl talk, but they are unusual girls.
When Jody said they were waiting for back-up, Ka was so naïve; she asked if Jody had called in the National Guard. I laughed at the thought of the National Guard’s reaction to being called in to hunt monsters.
Sheriff Donna Hanscum is on the job! I like Donna and she is looking good, so let’s have a little trivia time:
What was written on Donna’s vanity plate?
What did she respond to “Why so many weapons?”
What ironic name did Donna call Claire?
When Donna looked through the binoculars, what did she see that let her know they were at the right shipyard?
I’ll have to wait for Taltos to tell us what music they were playing when Jody and Donna searched the shipyard because I did not recognize the genre. They were doing an excellent job of eliminating monsters until a dozen of them appeared. It was scary when Jody and Donna were trapped in a car, but Claire used the flame thrower to effectively eliminate the threat. They had a really exciting battle after that and made it safe for Claire and the boys to return from the other dimension.
I liked seeing Dean and Sam in the other dimension, but they were no match for what was over there. Claire bravely entered the bad place with Ka and they cut the bindings and freed Dean and Sam. The spirit warrior appeared and so did some monster that was towering over the trees. The warrior threw a lance that would have hit Claire, but Ka pushed Claire out of the way. The lance killed Ka, but the rest of them escaped and the breach closed.
While in the other universe, Dead did give us some lighter moments when he explained that lizard meat tastes like
lizard. When they were running for their lives, Dean turned around and went back for his lizard meat meal. He called the warrior “Darth Dickwad”, and when he heard the monster approaching, he said the warrior had rung the dinner bell.
