A true American hero, the likes of which are so incredibly rare in these dark times. I thank the universe for a man like him who showed unbelievable bravery while in the Navy and his incarceration and torture in Viet Nam, and then to go past that with decades of service in the United States Senate. He was always a maverick. He was a man who frustrated his own party by sticking to his beliefs about honor and integrity even when they snapped at his heels about it. If they had not insisted (and he signed off about it) that Sarah Palin been his running mate he might well have been our president rather than George W. Bush. And we probably would have been better off.
I Always go for the hero, the person who is willing to serve his fellow man and put himself in the path of danger to protect others.
I am a Democrat, but John McCain will always be my hero. I fear a world without people like him in it. Someone who knows about sacrifice for country and for a higher cause.
As Edward Stanton said at Abraham Lincoln's death, "Now he belongs to the ages."
I hope we will remember what it was to have someone with this amount of bravery walking the earth.
The world is diminished with his loss.
